Welcome and Introduction

Welcome to edition number nine of Kaba Connect, your quarterly news magazine.

Our team in Kaba Australia has carried out numerous projects in the past few months. We selected three of the most exciting ones to share with you. To start with, we will take a look at the installations completed at Golden Grove High School. Staying in South Australia, we will then highlight the Port Lincoln Airport and Kaba evolo. The Laing O’Rourke construction site in Queensland will be our final destination.

With the Security Exhibition and Conference 2014 arriving soon in Melbourne, which of course Kaba is looking forward to attending, we have the pleasure of welcoming Alfred Aschmann from the Kaba head office in Switzerland. We took the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his trip to Australia and the new Kaba TouchGo product.

Our regular product news section will focus on two new Kaba innovations – Kaba TouchGo and Kaba B-web 96 00, followed by an in-depth review of Detex’s core product Advantex. In other news, our updated price list has been effective since March and our e-mail address format has changed. Finally, our architectural scheduler Brad Feltham will conclude this ninth edition in the now already traditional ‘Have you met…’ segment.

As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of Kaba Connect – we all certainly enjoy bringing it to you.

Best WishesJean Adam

Welcome to the latest edition of Kaba Connect. I am currently lucky enough to be hosting Jean Adam, an intern from a

university in France. As part of Jean’s work experience here in Australia, I asked if he would like to be a guest editor for

Kaba Connect and he graciously agreed. I hope you enjoy Jean’s take on recent events and I will be back at the helm

for edition 10 of Kaba Connect - Nicole Richardson.

Kaba Australia chosen as the security solutions provider for Golden Grove High School

The Golden Grove High School, established in 1989, is

located north of Adelaide in the City of Tea Tree Gully. It is

part of the Golden Grove Secondary School Campus – a

consortium of three schools, public and private. The

school supplies superior educational services through

challenging and coherent curriculum, whilst providing a

secure and caring environment.

The high performing secondary school offers to their

students a bright range of programs in Mathematics,

Science, English, Spanish and physical education. As well

as traditional subjects, a specialized dance program is

provided, along with the promotion of drama, music and

digital multi-media.

Ensuring a secure and safe environment is one of the

school’s priorities. Kaba Australia was chosen to

undertake the task of upgrading the school’s security

system with a simple to use and time efficient system.

The solution was Kaba’s on-line access control system,

Exos. API Security installed and commissioned a full FOB

access control system with Exos validation and update

readers, along with door furniture featuring 230 c-levers.

As a first step, only half of the school was equiped, but the

Golden Grove High School management team was

impressed with this simple and user-friendly system and

asked Kaba to complete the other half ahead of schedule.

The school is now complete and has been fitted out with

230 c-levers in total.

“ The FOB access control system has made management of our security so simple. We can allow only those who require access to a room access. If a FOB is lost, it is easy to block and replace with another. I would highly recommend the system. This is the best

thing I have done for my facility. ” Sue Ruciack, Business Development Manager GGHS

Port Lincoln Airport updates its security with Kaba

The Port Lincoln Airport is located near the township of

North Shields, about ten kilometres north of Port Lincoln,

a small city in South Australia. It is a crucial entrance to

southern Eyre Peninsula and provides a direct connection

to Adelaide.

Owned and managed by the District Council of Lower Eyre

Peninsula, the airport is the busiest regional airport in

South Australia thanks to its 190,000 annual passengers

and up to 24 scheduled daily passenger flights. In August

2013, the airport complex expanded with the opening of a

brand new terminal. All flights and services are operated

by two airlines, Regional Express and Qantaslink.

With the growing flow of visitors to manage on a daily

basis, the Port Lincoln Airport needed user friendly and

efficient security solutions. Assisted with a referral from

the Architect / Engineering firm GHD, the District Council

of Lower Eyre Peninsula decided to entrust Kaba with the

task of integrating a unique system design into their new

facility. Access Hardware carried out the project by

installing a Kaba Evolo standalone system which includes

c-levers and Remote Readers in order to secure sensitive

areas.

Product performance, ease-of-use and systems

integration have fully satisfied the expectations of both

the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula and the

Airport Management team. In fact, Kaba has been asked

to provide an access control upgrade to the

administration building and new gate system for the

Airport precinct.

“ Kaba products, personnel, professionalism and placement were all first class, we would not hesitate to contact them for our access

control requirements in the future. ”

Barrie Rogers, Manager Port Lincoln Airport

Kaba Australia secures Laing O’Rourke construction site

The New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) Project involved

the purchase of 75 six-car train sets to cater for the

increase in passenger services as South East Queensland

grows, and to replace an aging train fleet. The project is to

be provided by Bombardier and includes the maintenance

of the trains for 32 years, as well as construction and

maintenance of a modern, purpose-built maintenance

centre.

The construction of the maintenance centre was awarded

to Laing O’Rourke. Part of the construction works

included a solution to control visitor and contractor site

access. To that end, eInduct Systems partnered with Kaba

to provide an integrated visitor and contractor

management system and turnstile solution.

The integrated solution includes Turnstiles, Access

Control, Timesheet Management, Project Controls

Management, Electronic Inductions, User Management,

Competency, Training and Compliance Management and

Verification, Electronic Plant Management, and Materials/

Equipment / Asset Management with user display screen

and speaker, IP camera and evacuation siren.

Interview with Alfred AschmannSenior Manager Product Management EAC Products, Kaba SwitzerlandStrategic Marketing, ADS EMEA / AP

With the Security 2014 trade show coming

up in Melbourne, we are fortunate to

welcome Alfred Aschmann here at Kaba

Australia, Senior Manager Product

Management in Kaba Switzerland. We

therefore took this opportunity to ask him

a few questions about the latest Kaba

innovation TouchGo, and how he sees the

future of the security industry.

Q. Hi Alfred. Could you please introduce yourself to our readers in a few words, and tell us more about your history within the Kaba firm?

A. In 2003, I joined Kaba in Wetzikon, Switzerland. My responsibility was to build up a Product Management team for Mechatronic products like elolegic. Within this team, we enable competencies like marketing service, technical support and technical documentation, and we are an important contact partner to the RMOs (regional offices) regarding market introduction, marketing and product aspects. In 2010, new product lines like Kaba evolo and Kaba TouchGo with path breaking new design were introduced and changed the behaviour of our industry. An important step was to bring Mechatronic, Online Access and Workforce Management together.

With the major reorganisation within the ADS EMEA/AP Division in 2011, I took over the Product Management responsibility for EAC Products within the Strategic Marketing Department. Together with my colleagues Markus Müller (EAC Solution) and Peter Hauser (WFM Solution), we manage the AWM Solution and Product portfolio. A new area has started to focus more on solutions for market- and customer segments based on a generic product portfolio.

Q. You have travelled a long way from Switzerland to come in Australia. What is the reason behind your presence at Security 2014, and more generally, in Australia?

A. On the one hand, Australia is far away from Europe but on the other hand, there is also a lot of similarity regarding access control. New

technologies coming up will change our business in the future. According to me, it is very important to understand customer demands and how people think about the future of this Industry. Taking part in the Security 2014 gives me and Corinne Mertzlufft, Business Service MIC AWM, this opportunity as well as supporting the Australian Team in new market introductions.

Q. TouchGo is one of the newest, innovative Kaba products and you have been significantly involved in its development. Could you give us some more details about how the device functions?

A. Today, you usually get access control through a key or an RFID media which needs to be presented to a lock or reader. Looking for a key or card in the pocket is always a first inalienable step. TouchGo changes

Page 8KABA Connect Issue 9

this process and gives more comfort to the user. People open a door by pressing the handle without showing a credential. The TouchGo credential is in the pocket or bag and transfers the identification Key in small electrical signals over the human body. The door will be released, just like opening a door that is unlocked.

Q. What applications do you see Kaba TouchGo most suited for?

A. During the introduction in Europe, we learned a lot about how high convenience is a major customer demand. There are organisations which require doors to be locked but need to be opened frequently during the day like e.g. offices or public organisations, where they have to control private sectors. The biggest success we have lies in care homes or

retirement residences. TouchGo solves a major problem there, especially for dementia patients. Those will press the handle along the corridor and if the right room is found, the door opens. The staff uses RFID cards which can be operated in addition to TouchGo with the c-lever E310. For other access points, the whole Kaba AC portfolio can be used and managed within one system.

Q. What is your vision of the security industry? Do you think this innovative keyless system will become the next access control standard in a few years?

A. There is a lot of activity in the market using smart phones as a potential replacement for card or keys. All our components from the Kaba evolo line are potentially ready to intercommunicate with a

NFC (Near Field Communication) interface to a smart phone. The major issue is to handle access rights securely from the access management system to the smart phone device which is emulating a card. Kaba invests in such solutions, which will become a part of the Access Control world in the next few years. However, I believe that keyless solutions will not fully replace keys and card as a predictable and cost-effective credential, especially in cases where high flexibility in changing access rights are not requested.

Kaba Group HeadquartersRümlang, Switzerland

Page 9 KABA Connect Issue 9

Accessing the right room can be problematic in aged care facilities, especially for those residents suffering dementia and arthritis. The solution was to create an access control system that doesn’t require the use of a key or access media yet only allows residents to enter their own rooms. Meet TouchGo.

With TouchGo, residents can open their own rooms by simply using the door handle. A transponder either on their person or in close proximity, eg. their bag grants them access. If they try and enter the wrong room, the door will not unlock. Once the resident has entered their room, the door will re-lock to those on the outside, while maintaining free egress to the resident on the inside.

TouchGo works with Kaba’s RCID technology (Resistive Capacitive Identification), which uses the natural static electricity generated by the human body to transmit the access rights from the transponder to the lock. Like Kaba’s other forms of access media, the transponder is simple to program and easy to replace in the event of it becoming lost.

Kaba TouchGo is available in conjunction with the Kaba c-lever. It is available as a stand-alone system or with optional software, off-line Kaba Evolo or on-line Kaba Exos.

• Keyless access control system

• Simply touch the handle to unlock the door

• Ideal solution for aged care facilities

• Convenient and easy to use

• Can be integrated with other Kaba systems

Kaba Australia’s partnership with Detex reaches its third year and continues to perform. The partnership has led to different projects in which Detex products have been installed. We chose to focus on the brand’s core product line: Advantex.

Detex Advantex is a premium range of quality panic and fire exit devices that will match every commercial application, e.g. shopping centres, industries, airports or hospitals. Advantex’s superior heavy duty design is made of a combination of aluminium and stainless steel. Certain finishes utilise the exclusive Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish, granting the device more resistance to corrosion, discolouring, fading and scratching, than traditional finishes.

Each Advantex Series device is also available in a

weatherized version, which can be exposed directly to the elements in outdoor applications. This feature perfectly suits harsh locations where the climate might be salty, moist or cold. In addition, Advantex 10 and 20 Series have been listed for use on fire rated doors.

Detex Advantex has been installed in numerous locations, including Bondi Icebergs and Sydney Airport. Both were equipped with Advantex 10 Series Weatherized devices, fitting the tough outdoor environment, especially near the sea.

Brad FelthamArchitectural Schedulerin Kaba Australia Head Office

Q. How did you end up working for Kaba and how long have you been here?

A. I was invited to a Kaba lunch at a rugby league match and was asked if I was interested in working for Kaba. And so I came for an interview and started from there. I have now been currently employed with Kaba for 6 years.

Q. What is the best thing about working in a head office and what is your biggest challenge?

A. If you need something approved or need to ask questions, you get responses straight away. You can talk to management face-to-face, not over the phone or email. The biggest challenge is trying to get projects out on time.

Q. In short, can you explain us what an architectural scheduler does?

A. You receive numbered plans, door schedule information from architects, builders, architectural door hardware companies. Then you schedule the

project, from their relating back to the plans and door schedule information.

Q. What are the projects you are working on at the moment?

A. I am currently working on a school, a shopping centre and a proposed new block of apartments.

Q. We want to know more about you. Tell us what you do when you are not in the office.

A. I like spending time with my family, watching sport and playing a bit of golf. I am also a big supporter of Parramatta Eels, which I have membership to and I go to all their home games.

Q. Anything else you would like to share with us?

A. Go Eels!

Have you met...

Among the various teams working here in Kaba Australia, we have architectural schedulers. What is hiding behind this barbarous name? We sat down with Brad Feltham to learn more about his working activites, but also about his life outside the head office.
