From Rabbi Rick Schechter
Each and every new year cradles the promise
of new beginnings and a wiser approach to living. We
see it as a time to start again—with new goals, new
dreams, and a new spirit for a fresh chapter in our
lives.
More often than not, it seems we focus our
new year’s aspirations on things we want to improve
about ourselves or our lives. We make that resolution
to start exercising more frequently, or to begin that
new diet program that promises to shed some
unwanted pounds. Such self-improvement
resolutions can ultimately be good for us, assuming
we follow through on them. Yet such a focus on
improvement can too easily become centered on
what’s wrong with our lives. Instead, what if we used
the start of a new year to focus on what’s right in our
lives? What if we paused to reflect upon and
appreciate what’s going well in our families, our
work, our relationships, ourselves, and our lives?
I can tell you which approach, of the two, is
more energizing, life-affirming, and ultimately more
fulfilling. It’s the strengths-based approach—focusing
on what’s right in our lives. That’s why gratitude,
optimism, and hope are such important values and
virtues within Judaism. That’s why at the very
beginning of the Torah, in the opening chapter of
Genesis, God reflects upon the creation of the world
and everything in it, and finds it all “very good.”
(Genesis 1:31)
Judaism is very much concerned with what’s
right with the world and how to create a good life.
Thousands of years of Jewish wisdom on how best to
live is today being confirmed by
the latest scientific findings in
psychology and the social
sciences. A strengths-based
approach to how we think, feel,
and act is being shown to lead to greater happiness,
productivity, engagement, achievement, meaning,
and better relationships in our lives.
The current scientific research and practices
are fascinating—and they have much in common
with Jewish thought and practice. As a temple
community, we’ll be exploring this next month in
“Living Your Strengths—For a Meaningful and
Fulfilling Life.” I’ll be teaching this four-part series on
Wednesday nights in February, sponsored by our
Adult Education Committee.
In this program, you’ll discover the six virtues
and 24 character strengths that lead to greater
human happiness, meaning, and fulfillment. You’ll
also uncover the top character strengths that are
unique to you, and then learn how to best use all of
them in your everyday life—whether at work, home,
or at school; with family, friends, co-workers, and
everyone you meet. Please look for and join us for
this special program at Temple Sinai this February,
beginning on Wednesday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m.
May you and your family be blessed in this
new year 2016 with health, happiness, and
fulfillment.
Shalom uvracha,

the president’s message By Donna Baar
Promises Remembered
Two of my campaign promises while
running for temple president …okay so
maybe I didn’t exactly have to run for
president…were to bring back Shabbat
Across Sinai and the Temple Sinai Family
Retreat. This past spring we had a wonderful
Shabbat Across Sinai event with many of
our temple members gathering at each
others' homes and sharing a delicious
Shabbat dinner and an evening of talking
and getting to know each other. We will be
doing another Shabbat Across Sinai on
March 25, 2016. It's my sincere hope that as
the word spreads about what an incredible
experience this is more and more members
will participate until it really becomes a
Shabbat across all our membership.
It has been many years since the Temple
Sinai community had a family retreat. Five
years to be exact. But members who
attended our last retreat still smile when they
talk about how much fun it was. We look
forward to rekindling this tradition. This
year the family retreat will take place on
May 22, coinciding with the last day of
religious school. What a great way to end
the school year! You don’t need to have
school age children to attend, you just need
to be young at heart. There will be activities
and learning opportunities for all age groups
and interests. Our children love going to
camp. Won’t it be great to join them for a
one-day Jewish camp experience in the
beautiful mountains of Altadena? Both
Shabbat Across Sinai and the Temple Sinai
Family Retreat are designed to help us
expand our connections within our
community. Making connections and being
an active part of the community is what
Temple Sinai is all about. I hope you will
join us for these very special events.

Festive Lights At Our Hanukkah Dinner
By Flo Cohen
Happy 2016 to you and your family from
Sisterhood. We ended 2015 with a terrific Hanukkah
party on December 13th. Beautifully chaired by Carrie
Meyers and Elizabeth Rausch, the event had everything
– menorah lighting, singing, great food, fun
entertainment, and the opportunity to celebrate the last
night of Hanukkah with temple friends and family.
Thanks to Rabbi Rick and Cantor Steve for all their
support and for setting such a warm, welcoming tone
for the evening. Thanks to the Campership families for
making the latke mix we used for the party, for making
the adorable gelt necklaces they sold to help support the
event, for setting up the room so beautifully, and for
serving the food at our dinner buffet.
One of the ways we keep the cost of the dinner
affordable is by having temple members donate briskets
they have prepared at home according to our “never-
fail” recipe. This year we had 18 briskets donated by the
following members: Donna Baar, Ilena Blicker, Flo
Cohen, Lisa Ducore, Beth Fabinsky, Phillip Hain, Robi
Hellman, Tracy Kaplan, Ruth Lambert, Suzy
Lenkowsky, Stephanie Loew, Melissa Mertens, Dannah
Phirman, Susie Ribnik, Melissa Rosen, Dana Schwartz,
and Ellen Strauss. These briskets were sliced and
prepped for the party by Ruth Lambert, Carrie Meyers,
and Linda Ribnik, Susie’s sister. Thank you to the
Cohen, Lowenthal, Ribnik, Simon, Thomas, and Weiss
families who donated additional money to help sponsor

this event, and thank you to Party Plaza in downtown
Glendale, who gave us special discounts on balloons
and lots of extras toward our party décor. And speaking
of discounts, Continental Kosher Bakery (temple
members Emily Payne & Eddy Polon) not only gave us
a generous discount on the delicious sufganiyot &
cookies we had for dessert, they made an additional
hefty donation to our Campership fund! A special thank
you goes to our TSG staff: Azo Khachatourian, Barak
Malkin, and Susan Hain for publicizing the dinner,
fielding inquiries, and handling registration. Finally, a
HUGE thank you goes to Santos Diaz, our amazing
custodian, for all his time and efforts on our behalf.

We brought Menorahs from home. We ate. We sang. It was Hanukkah!

Notes From Brotherhood Men of Reform Judaism
Night of the Empty Round Table by Larry Moskowitz
We hope you had an enjoyable Hanukkah and a fun, safe New Year celebration.
December was a quiet month for Brotherhood. With the BBQs, breakfasts, hot dog lunches, Sukkot Dinner and
Brotherhood Shabbat behind us, and the holiday season before us, we decided to take a bit of a hiatus. We even
cancelled our December meeting.
We shall return in January, beginning the new year with a Texas Hold’em poker game. And we'll start gearing up for
Yom HaShoah.
Our first meeting of 2016 is scheduled for January 12 at 7:30 pm. Please join us. Wouldn't attending a Brotherhood
meeting be a great way to fulfill your new year’s resolution to participate more in temple activities?
On behalf of Bill, Phillip, Larry, Larry, Harley, Steve, George, Seth, Roger, Tim, Jordan, Marc, Craig, Jan and all the
other Brotherhood members, we wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.

BAT MITZVAH
PROFILE
CLAIRE GALICIA by Joyce Moskowitz
Claire leads the charge on January 29, by becoming the first bat mitzvah of the secular new year. "My Torah portion is Yitro from the book of Genesis," she tells us. Listen to what Claire was able to glean from her studies and apply to her life today. "There were three major lessons I took from my Torah portion...Asking others for help, trusting those who you ask for help, and collaborating with others."
Claire enjoys reading but insists she doesn't have one favorite book. "But I do have a favorite series of books," she admits. "The Divergent Series has been my favorite series for the past three years because the author talks about every subject you would want in a book," she says. "From survival and romance to adventure...The author, Veronica Roth, discusses it all."
Which is a great segue to one of Claire's favorite memories about this journey. "When I met with Rabbi to talk about my speech, all of a sudden we were discussing favorite books like Divergent and favorite movies...like The Hunger Games." Claire admitted that Rabbi was a pretty knowledgeable resource. "It was actually fun to talk about this for awhile."
Claire's enthusiasm for books and the written word has led her to consider a career in teaching in the future. "I'm still thinking about what I want to be when I grow up. My mind changes all the time," she says. "However, for the past year, I have really been interested in becoming an elementary school teacher. At religious school I'm a teacher's assistant for a third grade class," she enthuses. "It's fun to help the younger kids learn Hebrew plus I enjoy listening to all of their stories." Seems it runs in her family. "My mom teaches second
graders and my grandma was a pre-school teacher. I guess you can say it is in my genes." For Claire's bat mitzvah project, she collected new or gently used books and donated them to low-income school kids. "By doing this I get the opportunity to share my love of reading with younger kids who aren't able to afford books." Aside from reading, doing school work and studying hard for this day, Claire also plays the violin in her school orchestra. "I've been doing this since the 4th grade," she tells us. She also has two pets...one dog and one cat that keep her busy. "Molly is a bull dog, boxer, pit mix and my cat is a black and white Tuxedo named Percy." [From the book series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan.]
Claire wants everyone to know that she considers her mom her hero. "She does so much for me," she reflects. "She drives me everywhere, cooks for me... there is never a time when she is too tired to say she can't do something for me." The one person – out of anyone in the world – Claire would love to have at her bat mitzvah? "My Opa," she says. (Grandpa, Walter Goldsmith). "He sadly passed away five years ago. I had an extremely tight bond with him and he would be very proud of me in all that I was able to accomplish this evening."
Please join us at The Scribe in congratulating Claire and her family – mom and dad (Laura Goldsmith and Walter Galicia), and older brother Gabriel on Claire becoming a bat mitzvah. Mazel Tov!

More Prayer Books Donated and Appreciation!
I am happy to say that we have been able to find a new home and new life for 85 copies of our old blue Gates of Prayer.
We donated them to the Irving Havurah in Irving Texas, where Roger Baar's sister Vicki was our "matchmaker"!
Also, we received a lovely letter of thanks from Temple Har Shalom of Idyllwild for the prayer
books we donated to them in November. From the letter sent by the temple president, Patricia
Schnetzer: "Should ... any members of your congregation be up in Idyllwild, you would all be so
welcome to join us for services, which are usually held on the second Friday evening of the
month." See their website, templeharshalomidyllwild.org for location and current events.

The Lawgiver
by
Herman Wouk
The title definitely belongs on a movie marquee. This charming little novel centers on the
possible making of a movie about Moses. Not the Charlton Heston one, but one based on
the actual story in the Torah. Characters in the novel include a young woman writer who left
a rigid Orthodox background, a lawyer, a screen writer, an Australian multimillionaire, an
actor with little experience and Herman Wouk and his wife Betty. The tale is told through a
series of letters, emails and journal entries. Pivotal to the novel is that Wouk always wanted
to write a novel about Moses but didn’t feel ready for it. This book was written in 2012
when he was only 97. It was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. Enjoy!

Chronicle of a Death Foretold
By
Gabriel García Márquez
Considered one of the best Spanish language writers, as well as one of the best writers
period, Márquez presents us with a dilemma. A man returns home after many years to
investigate who killed his friend. We find out who the killer was in the first chapter but then
go back in time throughout the novel to look into all the details as they happened. A young
woman, newly married, returns to her family in disgrace. Her brothers find out the name of
her lover and threaten to kill him. Márquez leads us on a journey and along the way
condemns not only the murderers but an entire society as well.

The Scribe Publication Policy
The editorial staff of The Scribe, under the direction of the Communications Committee, in collaboration with Temple Sinai of
Glendale president and clergy, is issuing the following publication policy:
Purposes and goals. The primary purposes of The Scribe are to (a) provide information and opportunities for involvement in temple
programs and surrounding community affairs, and (b) to communicate messages to the congregation from our officers, clergy,
committees and interest groups. Our goal is to ensure that publication content is always consistent with the core values named in our
temple’s vision statement.
Consequently, we gladly continue to encourage and accept the following items for inclusion in The Scribe:
Regular features such as articles from clergy and officers.
Reports and announcements from committees, interest groups and event coordinators.
News of upcoming temple activities, such as social events, Shabbat services, classes, seminars, guest speakers, fund-raising events and
youth group outings; and reports of such activities after they occur.
Announcements and order forms regarding temple-based items for sale, such as Judaica shop merchandise, Rosh HaShanah honey and
Hanukkah latke mix.
Reminders of recurring events such as “Family Night Dinner,” “Tot Shabbat” and “Meditation at Temple Sinai.”
Acknowledgement of cash donations, flower fund donations and oneg sponsorship. Monthly information such as yahrzeits, Torah
readings and condolences.
Any other material, including reports, events and activities from the wider community, must be consistent with the purposes and goals
stated above.
While we encourage and support individual creativity and diverse points of view, we regretfully can no longer accept personal articles
and opinion pieces for publication.
As always, the editorial staff reserves the right to review, edit, and approve any and all material submitted for inclusion in The
Scribe. For additional information or clarification about our policy, please contact Heather Ross or e-mail [email protected].
