If you haven’t had the chance to be involved in an interview to hear about your child’s progress and the goals they have set around their learning for the year, please make contact with your child’s teacher. We really value the opportunity to meet with you and your child so that we can all be aware of ways we can support their learning progression. Swimming Carnival and Harmony Day were great events in our school calendar and we appreciate the behind the scenes work done by teachers Joe, Connor and Anna to make these days a success. Thank you to the families – parents and grandparents who came along to help or support the students. Our House Captains did a fantastic job at the Swimming Carnival setting up each of the house tents and leading chants and their teams across the day. The final results were Para in first place followed by Barossa, Millbrook and Warren. Students enjoyed making the Koi Fish kites with their buddy classes and you can still see some of these hanging up in classrooms whilst others went home with the students. If you have any feedback you would like us to consider for next year please email me. Governing Council and staff have reviewed and endorsed our School Wear Policy. We have included a copy in this newsletter so that you can prepare for term 2. Please note that House T-shirts are only to be worn for Sports Days and Swimming Carnivals and are not part of our everyday school wear. Dear Families, Interviews have nearly all been completed. If you haven’t had the chance to be

involved in an interview to hear about your child’s progress and the goals they have set

around their learning for the year, please make contact with your child’s teacher. We

really value the opportunity to meet with you and your child so that we can all be

aware of ways we can support their learning progression.

Swimming Carnival and Harmony Day were great events in our school calendar and we

appreciate the behind the scenes work done by teachers Joe, Connor and Anna to

make these days a success. Thank you to the families – parents and grandparents who

came along to help or support the students.

Our House Captains did a fantastic job at the Swimming Carnival setting up each of the

house tents and leading chants and their teams across the day. The final results were

Para in first place followed by Barossa, Millbrook and Warren.

Students enjoyed making the Koi Fish kites with their buddy classes and you can still see

some of these hanging up in classrooms whilst others went home with the students. If you

have any feedback you would like us to consider for next year please email me.

Governing Council and staff have reviewed and endorsed our School Wear Policy. We

have included a copy in this newsletter so that you can prepare for term 2. Please note

that House T-shirts are only to be worn for Sports Days and Swimming Carnivals and are

not part of our everyday school wear.

Governing Council Report—Term 1 With a new school year we would like to welcome several new members to the Governing Council - Jane Haley,

Mona Jamshaid, Aimee Patten and Alec Buttfield. We would also like to thank and acknowledge outgoing

members Brian Parish, Kathryn Bartsch for her work in the development of the Master Plan, and Michelle Yandell

for her years as Treasurer.

The Budget for 2019 is now approved and includes some funds for facilities maintenance and upgrades such as

the replacement of the air-conditioning systems in the middle years.

Quotes for the Norwood Oval entrance have come back considerably larger than originally anticipated and

further developments are on hold while long term agreements on oval access are negotiated with Norwood

Football Club and the Norwood Payneham St Peters city Council.

Melissa has begun exploring our options for commencing development of the Nature Play area, hoping that

work can be done in stages to allow greater access for play through the school year as well as potential for

community involvement in the creation of the site where appropriate.

The next Governing Council Meeting will be held in Term 2, week 3. Monday 13 May at 7:00pm in the staff room.

If you have anything you would like Governing Council to discuss, please let them know.

Reminder to NPS students participating in the SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards Exhibition 2019—

all posters are to be returned to Julie before Monday 1st April (9:00am).

Traffic Safety at NPS—Let’s Look Out for Each Other! We are still receiving reports of serious ‘near-misses’ that are occurring between cars and cyclists using the

Osmond Terrace bike lane due to cars double parking in the bicycle lane as well as reversing over the bike lane

directly in the path of cyclists. This is not only extremely hazardous, it is also illegal and can incur a minimum $269

fine.

Cars are also often parking in the school driveway and

then reversing over the footpath which puts pedestrians

and cyclists at risk.

School drop-off and pick-up can be a particularly

chaotic time, so it is important that extra care is taken at

these times.

We thank you for your co-operation and please—for the

safety of all concerned, let’s all do the right thing!

Instrumental Strings News Strings lessons are well underway. To ensure our students continue to develop their skills we ask that they

practice and prepare for their lessons, have their instrumental diaries signed and bring their instruments to school

on Mondays attending their lessons punctually.

Thank you.

This year Norwood Primary School will be participating in the Commissioner’s Digital Challenge – Learn to speak robot, for years 3 - 6. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about computational thinking and basic coding. It was created by the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly, after she discovered that South Australian children wanted to have new creative ways to learn what they need know to prepare for jobs of the future. Helen believes that our children need inclusive active opportunity to understand digital technology and to develop digital literacy skills, operate as a digital citizen and reach their potential through digital empowerment. This is how the Commissioner’s Digital Challenge was created.

We will be completing this challenge during class time at the start of term 2, however, students are able to complete some of the challenges at home as well. The great thing about the Commissioner’s Challenge is that it can be completed on a device or just by using pencils and paper. I will have the Student Coding Records, which need to be completed by the 13th September. If your student is participating in the Children’s University Program they will receive accreditation towards their Children’s University Certificate as well.

As we are officially part of the Commissioner’s Challenge, we are eligible to win digital rewards for our students. These include:

A brand new school website or upgrade 1 winner

Class set of programmable micro:bits

4 winners

The latest programmable camera drones

10 winners

Grok ‘all access’ class subscriptions

6 winners

Data packs with Powerbanks

4 winners

Plus, every school that participates receives access to 3 exclusive 1 hour Digital Challenge webinars written for South Australian teachers by Microsoft. And every child completing the Challenge earns a certificate from the Commissioner for Children and Young People.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
