– On farm introduction to dairy management aspects. Interpretation of computerized records, reproduction programs, milk quality, welfare and nutrition. Offered twice. Class limit of 20. Travel to ISU dairy farm (student’s responsibility) is required.
• VDPAM 494: Adv. Dairy Production Medicine: Dr. Pat Gorden– Advanced coverage of dairy herd problems. On farm investigations of
milk quality and nutrition related problems will be emphasized. Prerequisite VDPAM 484. Offered twice. Class limit of 6. Travel to ISU dairy farm (student’s responsibility) is required.

production practices. Field trips are incorporated to highlight topics. Offered twice. Class limit of 12. Travel to sites, (student’s responsibility) with possible overnight stays, is required.

• VDPAM 480: Swine Production Medicine: Drs. Locke Karriker and Alex Ramirez– Small group, on-farm activities develop critical
thinking skills to solve real time swine production cases. Focus on diagnostic sampling skills, pharmacology, swine management procedures and population medicine. Offered six times. Class limit of 10. Travel to sites, with occasional overnight stays, is required.

Led by Dr. Terry Engelken– Focus on evidence based medicine, epidemiology, and
economics of production using partial budgeting models. Offered twice. Class limit 12.
• VDPAM 483: Beef Production Medicine: Dr. Terry Engelken– Exposure to cow-calf and feedlot production concepts. Field
trips are incorporated whenever possible. May include a one week visit to GPVEC. Offered three times. Class limit 15. Usually travel to GPVEC in ISU vans with overnight stays required.
Beef Cattle: Off Campus• VDPAM 464x: Advance Stocker/Feedlot Medicine:
Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Field trips to stocker/beef feedlots in Oklahoma over two week
rotation. Students participate in health management/disease prevention, production and economic analysis exercises. Offered twice. Class limit of 6. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays required.
• VDPAM 482i: FL: Applied Beef Production: Feedlot Management: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Field trips to beef feedlots in Oklahoma. Hands on working
experience at a stocker operation in Oklahoma. Offered 15 times. Class limit of 2. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays required.
Beef Cattle: Off Campus• VDPAM 482i: CW: Cattle Working: Based in Missouri &
Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Hands on cattle working experience-stocker and cow-calf
operations in Oklahoma and Missouri- including pregnancy checking and routine vaccinations. Offered 4 times. Class limit of 1 student. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required.
• VDPAM 482i: SFC: Sweiger Farms Calving: Based in Missouri: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Hands on working experience during active calving times at a
large cow-calf operation in NW Missouri. Offered 4 times. Class limit of 3. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required.

Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Consulting visits with Dr. Sweiger in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas

• VDPAM 482i: ST: Stocker: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Hands on working experience at a stocker operation in Oklahoma.

• VDPAM 482i: CM: Cattle Marketing: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger– Cattle order buying in Oklahoma. Gain understanding of how this
segment of the beef industry works. Offered twice. Class limit of 2. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required.

– Collection and interpretation of animal welfare data, aid clients in identifying and achieving welfare goals and working with law enforcement on animal cruelty responses. Offered twice. Class limit of 15. Travel to sites, (student’s responsibility) with possible overnight stays, is required.
• VDPAM 476: Food Animal Field Service: Dr. Bruce Leuschen:– Assist ISU veterinarians with delivering health care to food animal and camelid client farms in
the region. Offered ALL blocks. Class limit of 4. Travel to sites is required.
• VDPAM 451: Clinical Embryo Transfer: Dr. Jim West:– Experience in embryo transfer and related reproductive techniques. Review of reproductive
physiology, synchronization protocols, donor and recipient management. Practical experience in embryo collection and transfer. Offered 10 times. Class limit of 4. Travel to ISU/ARS farms (student’s responsibility) is required.
• VDPAM 455/488: Diagnostic Laboratory/Clinical Microbiology: Dr. Darin Madson & Joann Kinyon:
– Practical experience in diagnosis for livestock diseases through exposure to cases submitted to the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Application of microbiological and immunological procedure to diagnose livestock diseases. Offered 17 times. Class limit of 6.
