Owen Wright rampaged through the ASP Pro Junior Series, terrifi ed the Star and Prime events and

vaulted into the Rookie of the Year spot in 2010. He opted out of the US Open to further rehab a nagging ankle injury and then took his freshly-rehabbed hoof to Desert Point to warm up for the Billabong Pro Teahupo'o contest. Wright got a closer view of the reef than anticipated.

INDUSTRY: CALIFORNIAIndustry raises $400K

Professional surfers and industry VIPs joined together to support

preservation of the ocean at the SIMA Environmental Fund ‘Waterman’s Weekend’ fundraiser at the Monarch Beach Golf Links on August 11, and the Waterman’s Ball at the Ritz-Carlton La-guna Niguel on August 12. Waterman’s Weekend raised more than $5.8 million over the past 22 years for environmen-tal causes.

The event honored Greg Long as Wa-terman of the Year, Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner as Environmentalist of the Year, and George Downing with the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award, for their powerful influence on the sport, culture and business of surfing. More info: www.sima.com

In an interview Wright said he’d be “good to go” for the Teahupo'o event despite missing a bit of his fo-rehead. “I was like: ‘How bad is it?’ Then I was like: ‘let’s just super glue it and butterfly clip over the top.’ They were like: ‘yeah, kinda. But perhaps you should have a look in the mirror first.’ And then I did and I was like, ‘holy shit! Lets go get this stitched up.” More info: www.aspworldtour.com

Jeff Martin and Scott Jarrett were given a ticket for $500 for using a PWC in an non approved area. The ticket warned that if they

chose to fi ght it, they could be assessed as much as $140,000. They chose to fi ght. PWCs are only allowed at Maverick's during the big wave contest.

Martin and Jarrett will be bringing the fi ght to Santa Cruz. They plan to make their case during the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary day-long advisory council meeting reserved for business not already on the agenda. "If they don't do something, they will have another surfer's death on their hands," said Jarrett.

CULTURE: CALIFORNIACardiff ‘Kook’ statue becomes prey for pteranodon

The bronze statue in Cardiff-by-the Sea has been the target of mockery,

controversy and late-night redesigns since its installation in 2007. This time pranksters have outdone themselves. A huge prehistoric pterodactyl swoops down over the surfer and a painted backdrop of a volcanic eruption, small palm trees and two velociraptors com-plete the scene.

Surfers and artists say the boy's dainty look is an insult, and that his pose is awkward. “Cardiff Kook” has replaced the official name – “Magic Carpet Ride” - in the public consciousness. Last year, a canvas-and-cardboard shark was built around the statue, seemingly devouring the surfer.

SUP: NEW YORKo'Neill Sea Paddle NYC raises $350,000 for charity

Nearly 150 stand-up paddleboarders hit the Hudson, Harlem and East Rivers

to complete in the O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC and raised more than $350,000 for its beneficiaries and Surfers’ Environmental Alliance’s environmental projects.

In addition to the event’s charity paddlers, SEA’s Elite Race welcomed top competi-tors from the SUP industry. O’Neill team racer Rob Rojas took top honors. New Zealand’s Starboard team rider Annabel Anderson took first place in the women’s SUP division and second place overall. Lending a helping hand Garrett McNamara supported paddlers via a WaveJet powered SUP.

Des Iles Usion is the webisode adventure of three friends left on a desert island. Equip-

ped with equipment including solar panels, surfboards, hammocks, a pot and two hens, they board a boat to fi nd the last empty island conducive to surfi ng.

The castaways set up camp and adjust to their new life. Everyday tasks just to give them very basic comfort sometimes override the surf ses-sions. How will they cope?

Behind the camera, Ronan Gladu fi lms the entire adventure. Solar panels recharge bat-teries and he offers the story in a web-series beginning September 20, 2011. Each Tuesday and Thursday for 10 weeks an episode of three minutes will be posted.

FILMS: GERMANYBLUe Surf Film Nacht Frankfurt

Surf Movie Night took place in Frankfurt on Saturday August 20 at the King Kamehameha Beach Club in Offenbach am See with three films featured:“Leave A Message”; “The Pure Line”; and

“Scratching The Surface.” Nike 6.0s " Leave A Message” caused a worldwide sensation, as it establishes a new chapter of the women's surfing with Coco Ho, Carissa Moore, Malia Manuel and Laura Enever all going bigger and badder. The film delivers an adrenaline rush like no women surf movie before.

“The Pure Line” tells the story of Jeffreys Bay, beginning with the invasion of the village by the surfing hippies of the 60s. Historical footage shows how the scene rebelled against apartheid and how the an-nual contest was brought into being.

“Scratching The Surface” showcases Julian Wilson who has the best chance to make it as a rookie sensation on the World Tour.

INDUSTRY: CALIFORNIABillabong collaborates with renowned surf artist Andy Davis

Billabong has partnered with surf artist Andy Davis on a new range of apparel

which celebrates the fun and funk of surfi ng’s lifestyle. Davis carved a popular niche with his Free apparel line in the 1990s and more recently created designs under the Ando and Friends label.

The new relationship allows Davis to focus on his art while Billabong’s infrastructure absorbs the complexities of sales, manufacturing and distribution. “It’s a dream set-up and I’m very excited to now be able to produce a line show-casing my art that is 100% organic or recy-cled.” said Davis. Davis describing the vibe of his latest crea-tions says. “It’s surf-driven, but there are many other elements beyond just riding waves which make up the spirit of the surf and beach lifes-tyle. I try to capture that feeling in my art.”

SURF AID: CALIFORNIAArtists & shapers join forces for Surf Aid International

The Board Art Benefi t, brainchild of Matt Beard, is desi-gned to bring leading artists together at great venues

where they have the opportunity to create live art on surf-boards for the purpose of raising support for SurfAid Inter-national. The fi rst event will be held at the upcoming Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo in Del Mar on October 8-9, 2011.

The concept was inspired by a recent event that SurfAid International held at the last Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo in Santa Cruz, called Shapers 4 Humanity. Several of the world’s top shapers were invited to take part in a live sha-ping event and donate the fi nished boards to SurfAid. The Board Art Benefi t simply extends this concept to the artists and allows them to lend their unique aesthetic vision to the surfboards as well.

The Board Art Benefi t provides the public with a great chance to witness some of their favorite artists at work, and to support SurfAid. The fi nished boards from this event will later be auctioned, with the proceeds benefi ting SurfAid International.

Participant shapers/artists: Phil Roberts / Gerry Lopez; Rick Rietveld / Jed Noll; Damian Fulton / Firewire; Erik Abel / Roberts Surfboards; Heather Ritts / Firewire; Matt Beard / Yohei Shiraishi Taiyo Surfboards; Spencer Reynolds / Jeff 'Doc' Lausch;Wade Koniakowsky / Mike Hynson; Tyler Warren / Hobie; Drew Brophy / Ron House

Stand-up paddling took center-stage at Duke's OceanFest celebration in Waikiki, with a series of

showcase events in the Go Pro Presents C4 Water-man SUP Surf-Off & SUP Race. Stand-up paddling was invented by Waikiki’s beach boys, one of whom Duke Kahanamoku was himself.

Competition ranged from serious surfi ng and speed-sprint courses to a little SUPZilla tomfoolery thrown in. Most surfers to ride a wave on one SUP board? Fifteen!

Duke’s OceanFest include the Duke’s Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim; the Hawaiian Airlines Duke’s Legends Surf Classic; and Outrigger Canoe Wave Surfi ng Exhibition; the Kona Longboard Lager Invitational Beach Volleyball Tournament; the Maui Jim presents 2011 Hawaii Paddle-board Championship (Duke’s Race); and the Hawaiian 105KINE Great Hawaiian Luau at the Waikiki Aquarium.

INDUSTRY: IRELANDInvestment sought for belt-buckle surfer’s tool

An entrepreneur has created the 'Irish Swiss Army knife' for the world’s 17 million surfboar-ders. Nick Ryan’s SurfBuckle is a belt buckle that doubles as a multi-purpose tool to tighten

or remove fin screws. It has a sharp edge for removing old wax and a wax comb. It can also be used as a bottle opener. Nick’s fledgling surf-wear company LirChild is using the Fundit.ie website to raise €30,000 to start producing the SurfBuckle. Nick studied marketing and entrepreneurship at University of Limerick and got the idea for the SurfBuckle when a friend was stuck at an airport without the necessary tool to remove the fins from his board.

Quiksilver in scaling back plans said: “The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.

The million-dollar contest, however, will go on: “The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest, and Long Beach has an incre-dible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing to-gether the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.”

CULTURE: SPAINenvironmental artist designs lowtide Mundaka work

Surfi lm Festibal had a special event in Mundaka on Saturday, Septem-

ber 3, as part of its mission to support surf culture on the Cantabrian Sea: The Amstel Surfari.

Environmental artist Jim Denevan was scheduled to start drawing on the sand around 10:30 a.m., fi nishing at low tide by 3:00 p.m. Rain delayed the be-ginning, but by noon conditions were excellent with perfect humidity to retain the sand in all its shape and contrast. Deneven didn’t stop spinning for three hours, spectators were amazed as a guy armed with a stick and a rake created a huge drawing of amazing geometry.

The majestic work started to disappear the moment it was fi nished, covered by the rising tide, and vanishing com-pletely in just a matter of hours. The ephemeral artwork was recorded for posterity in a short fi lm directed by Patrick Trefz and in a series of photos by Roke.

The mid-September rotation of top seeds on the ASP World Tour took place after the conclusion

of the Quiksilver Pro New York and will be in effect for the fi rst time during the Hurley Pro at Trestles, California.

Out of the bracket went Floridians Gabe Kling, and CJ Hobgood, along with Californian Bobby Martinez. In came Fred Patacchia, Travis Logie and Yadin Nichol (zooming to 27 after his US Open fi nal), who immediately informed the governing body that he was not fi t to compete due to a broken fi bula sustai-ned while surfi ng in Japan late August.

That brought John John Florence into the Top 34. ASP have promised Nichol a wildcard slot in the season-ending Billabong Pipeline Masters should he be ready to surf at that time.

‘F1’ hits the Water PHENO by STARK, the new ‘Formula 1’ of surfboards

80

Page 81: It Thirty Days in Surfing

After testing by surfers in all possible conditions the PHENO has finally

arrived, courtesy of Stark Surfboards. The idea was to develop a higher performance surfboard with better flex adjusting to help make maneuvers common to aerial surfing.

Inside the surfboard carbon tubes are sandwiched in a design honored by EuroSIMA in 2009.

This new design concept has been dubbed “PHENO” for “Phenomenon” and was developed by French shaper, John Pierre Stark in association with Atuacores and the Notox workshop.

The principle: Replace the traditional stringer with two parallel carbon tubes in the center. After laboratory studies it was decided to replace polyurethane foam with expanded polystyrene. The result was an excellent balance between rigidity and flexibility.

After years of developing and testing the design, this surfboard has received validation from the surfing community.

Steven Pierson (Tahiti champion) said “You have more speed with this board, and in small and hollow waves the board flexes where needed. For a powerful surfer like myself, I noticed that the board was very sturdy and snaps back easily as soon as you ease off on the foot pressure. The rebound from the carbon tubes is phenomenal. You can see the difference between this and a normal board, most notably with aerials. When landing, the board does not get hung up and thanks to carbon tubes, the board takes off again right away”.

81

Page 82: It Thirty Days in Surfing

The technology was kept under wraps while both national and international patents were being sought.

About Stark Surfboards: John Piere Stark started shaping in 1981 and was quickly recognized by the world’s best surfers. In his 30 years of experience Stark has shaped boards for Tom Curren, Tom Carroll, Damien Hardman, Flavio Padaratz, Vetea David (“Poto”), Didier Piter and many others… His tireless ability to listen and interpret a surfer’s need in a board has secured him a place alongside the world’s best shapers.

One day can sometimes offer so much . . . if you make the effort to be in the right

good call. At 10.30 a.m. the wave, the wind and tide all turned in our favor, and it pumped. All day.

Then, almost exactly the way it started, it ended. It had begun with a bang as soon as the winds switched from the northeast to a warm and gusty northwest, the barrels lined up and firing. Then at around six in the evening a southerly came crashing through. No warning, not forecast and not even suspected by locals.

It was like God just decided to hit the off switch.

I was frantically trying to put my big TV camera into my bag while the salt spray was gusting up onto the reef—it was pretty hectic.

Meanwhile all the surfers headed off as quickly as they could, wanting to get their jet skis back to the beach a couple of kilometers down the coast.

So I walked across the rocks with camera and tripod to check another spot, which works in south winds, and I couldn’t believe it. Perfect and no one out. Three-to-six-foot perfect right-hand barrels—like Kirra but easier.

I set up my camera, fretting over what I was missing, but I bagged a couple line-up shots. Within 10 minutes there were about four locals who lapped it up like there was no tomorrow.

What a way to end an epic day.

Surfi ng is more popular than ever, and the waves are getting crowded. One of surfi ng’s most prominent fi gures, 1966 world champion Nat Young, got his face pounded black and blue by another surfer not too long ago while surfi ng his home break of Angourie, Austra-lia. The incident prompted him to publish a book called Surf Rage, and a number of socially minded surfers contributed to the volume. One of them, Glen Hening, co-founded the Surfrider Foundation and later helped create the Groundswell Society, a grassroots organiza-tion that promotes social and educational issues related to ocean activities. I spoke at their annual conference in Ventura, and that address inspired my own book, Surfers Code.

Glen asked me to tell a group of young people what I have learned from the ocean. I decided to pass on the most important lessons of my career. I sat down and wrote them out very quickly off the top of my head, printed them on a card and handed them out that day. This is one of them.

It is true that really crowded surf breaks can be a catalyst for physical aggression, but it is certainly not inevitable. Sometimes we simply need to adjust our frame of mind. Imagine this scenario: a surfer is sitting on his board in a crowded line-up. A wave rolls in, and he is in a position to catch it. Suddenly he turns to the man or woman sitting alongside him and says, “You take this one.”

What has he done? With four words he has im-mediately created a less competitive atmosphere in the surf, and most likely the surfer who enjoyed the wave will return the favor down the line, and pass a wave along to someone else. It is tough out in the water today. We all get frustrated at crowded surf spots, but it is easy enough to help create some unexpected goodwill in the water.

One thing I know – another wave will always come through.

— SHAUN TOMSON

Surfriders’ Code of Ethics” sign was erected at Margaret River in Western Australia by Rosco Kermode and Robert Conneely in 1986.

Since then six surfers’ code plaques exactly the same have been erected. The fi rst two were in Byron Bay in 2004. A further two were put up on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane. Two signs are now standing in California, one in C Street, Ventura, and the other at the perfect point break of Rincon.

The fi rst French plaque went up in Anglet, north of Biarritz, in May 2008.

The New Waterman

Recently I had one of those odd side-slippy moments—the cultural equivalent of losing a fin in a cutback, when all you thought was normal suddenly takes on a whole new feel.

This happened during a visit to a friend of mine, a former top-ranked professional surfer, a guy with considerable style both in and out of the water, who’s always prided himself on staying tuned to high-performance surfing, and equipment too. So what was he into now? Longboard? Retro Fish? Cop-out. No way.

As soon as I walked in the door, he in-sisted we go stand up paddleboarding. A 14-foot C4 Vortic....... to be continued.

Ride ’em all, as one of the brands suggests. It’s also the mantra of a new kind of surfer

who takes his inspiration from an old kind of surfer.

Just about every noted waterman, it seems, has discovered Shipstern’s Bluff, Tasmania, Australia, an isolated slab at the bottom of a vast continent. It has become the vague du jour for the hairy-chested crew, with some absolutely epic rides recorded in 2008. None more so than this sequence of Aussie hellman Ryan Hipwood, who survives an airy moment with grace on the face.

Kelly Slater won the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing for the first time since 1996, defeating Yadin Nicol after domi-nating the final at Huntington Beach Pier.

Slater asserted his command in the final against Nicol with a frontside air-reverse and solidified the ride on the reform to earn an 8.50. He backed the ride up with a 7.77 to put Aussie Nicol in an early “combo” situation. Slater controlled the heat throughout.

Sally Fitzgibbons clinched the final stop on the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title series by topping dangerous wild-card Lakey Peterson in a hard-fought battle.

In the Pro Junior Men’s, top honors went to Brazilian wild-card Filipe Toledo, and Lakey Peterson won in Pro Junior Women.

Surf Solutions TV pre-teen surf contest

This pre-teen only event put on by Surf Solutions was split into three separate divisions – “Beatles” (12 and under), “Ants” (10 and under) and “Fleas” (8 and under). Over 30 young surfers attended.

The standard of surfi ng blew us away. From under-8s reading waves and performing turns to keep themselves perfectly in the pocket, to under-12s destroying the solid surf with powerful com-mitted manoeuvres and vertical surfi ng. The future of UK surfi ng is bright.”

Graham & Gerber take titles at Rote open

Bali’s Marlon Gerber and Tai “Buddha” Gra-ham from Australia put on impressive dis-plays to each end up in the coveted Rote Open 2011 top spots on the podium.

Gerber entered the event as the No. 1-ran-ked ISC Open surfer, and this win made him 2011 Coca-Cola ISC Open Champion. In the International Division, Australia’s Tai “Buddha” Graham went home with the fi rst place prize money. Graham is a long-time resident of Bali and activly participates in the Indonesian surfi ng scene.

Slater defeats Wright in an historic final

Kelly Slater won his fifth Hurley Pro at Trestles title, defeating Owen Wright with Slater overtaking Wright in a last-minute exchange in which both surfers improved their scores. It was Slater and Wright’s third consecutive final bout and marks a first in ASP history. No two com-petitors have ever faced off in three successive ASP Dream Tour Finals.

Wright has continued to build momentum throughout his sophomore year among the ASP Top 34. He dispatched Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson en route to his rematch against Slater, but he was unable to repeat the victory over the ve-teran that he’d enjoyed in New York. In their pre-vious final clash, at Teahupo'o, Tahiti, Slater was the winner.

The next stop on the 2011 ASP World Title tour is at the Quiksilver Pro France from October 4 - 13, 2011.
