Midway upon the journey of our championship, we fi nd ourselves in Magione! Yet far from being in a dark forest (pace Dante’s Divine Commedy) we are on an awesome and legendary raceway to celebrate the halfway mark of this premiere Formula 4 season. Three down and three more to go, from September on, with this round in Magione as the ideal centerpiece of an intense and exciting battle. Breathtaking is the word, if we consider that fi ve different drivers took at least one win so far. And those who still hope to make their glory dreams come true still have plenty of chances to do so between this weekend and the Imola grand fi nal in October. The hunt is still wide open!

Nel mezzo del cammin di campionato, ci ritrovammo a Magione! Che, lungi dall’essere una selva oscura, è lo splendido circuito umbro sul quale l’avventura della Formula 4 compie il giro di boa. Tre gare già alle spalle, e tre da disputare da settembre in poi. Al centro, come detto, l’appuntamento di Magione, ideale spartiacque di un campionato che si sta rivelando combattutissimo ed emozionante. Basta un dato per rendere l’idea: su 3 weekend di gara, sono già cinque i piloti riusciti a vincere almeno una gara. E per chi ancora non c’è riuscito, le occasioni certo non mancheranno, a partire da questo round fi no ad arrivare al gran fi nale del 12 di ottobre. La corsa continua!

Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth2

The top spot of the podium in the fi rst race of the third round of the Italian F4 Championship by Abarth once again goes to Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team). The Canadian thus reinforces his role as championship leader. Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec) closes behind him, doing a good job of keeping Mattia Drudi (F&M srl) at bay the whole time. Drudi, in fact, is the driver who most amazes and entertains in Race 1: he starts 4th, loses several positions, then reconquers his starting spot, one fast overtake after the other. Joao Viera (Antonelli Motorsport) and Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport) place fi fth and sixth, the Italian authoring a hard-headed race that sees him rise up the fi eld from sixteenth on grid. In the Trophy, Brandon Maisano (Prema Power Team) is again the best man, as in the previous rounds, increasing his gap even more over Al Khalifa (Jenzer Motorsport) and Keith Camilleri (Malta Formula Racing), second and third in the general standings.

A salire sul podio sul gradino più alto in questa nuova tappa dell’Italian F4 Championship by Abarth è ancora Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team). Il canadese si conferma sempre più leader del campionato, a seguirlo è invece Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec) che tiene sempre a debita distanza Mattia Drudi (F&M srl). Proprio quest’ultimo è quello che stupisce e diverte di più: parte 4°, perde vari piazzamenti e poi, a suon di sorpassi, riconquista la posizione dalla quale era partito. In quinta e sesta piazza si classifi cano, invece, Joao Viera (Antonelli Motorsport) e Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport). L’italiano è protagonista di una gara caparbia, allo start partiva addirittura sedicesimo. Nel trofeo Brandon Maisano (Prema Power Team) arriva, come nei round precedenti, primo e, in quella classifi ca, stacca sempre più Al Khalifa (Jenzer Motorsport) e Keith Camilleri (Malta Formula Racing), secondo e terzo classifi cati.

The inversion of position on grid for the top 8 of race 1 does not seem to bother Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) one bit. The Canadian confi rms he is the man to beat and gets another well-deserved victory in this second round. Behind him, Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport) is in good shape and could have tried to attack for the lead, if he hadn’t made a mistake on a corner. Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec) is the next one up at the checkered fl ag. However, the post-race inspections register a non-compliance in his vehicle. Commissioners give Pulcini a ten second penalty that relegates him in tenth place. Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Tema) thus gets to complete the podium, benefi tting from Pulcini’s sanction and from the fact that Brandon Maisano’s third place fi nish is “transparent” in the F4 Championship point tally. Mattia Drudi (F&M) also benefi ts from Pulcini’s “demotion” and rounds off the top 5.

L’inversione di griglia non rallenta Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) né smorza la sua voglia di vincere. Il canadese si conferma il nome da battere e, con merito, vince anche questa seconda gara. Alle sue spalle Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport) è in forma e, se non fosse stato per un errore in curva, avrebbe potuto provare ad attaccare il leader. Dietro di loro, allo sventolio della bandiera a scacchi, troviamo Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec). Il pilota romano, però, terminata la corsa ha dovuto fare i conti con i commissari, i quali hanno trovato una non conformità nella sua monoposto. Pulcini riceve così dieci secondi di penalizzazione e viene retrocesso al decimo posto. È, dunque, Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Tema) a salire sul podio, benefi ciando sia della penalità infl itta a Pulcini, sia del fatto che il terzo posto di Brandon Maisano è “trasparente” ai fi ni della F4 Championship. Anche Mattia Drudi (F&M) trae benefi cio dalla “caduta” di Pulcini e completa la top 5.

Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport) takes his fi rst season victory in Race 3. This is an especially important result, because, with the points gained, Russo could become the most menacing presence for leader Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) in the hunt for the title. In this third and last race of the weekend, in fact, the Canadian gets a “Drive Through” penalty precisely for having cut Russo off at one point and gets relegated to sixth place. Alain Valente (Jenzer Motorsport) and Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport) round off the podium, the latter doing a nice job of taking advantage of the collision between Mattia Drudi (F&M) and Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Team) ahead of him. The fi rst driver across the fi nish-line is actually Brandon Maisano (Prema Power), but - as we keep pointing out - the French driver competes in the Trophy dedicated to drivers who are 18 and over, so his results only count towards that competition.

A vincere gara 3 ci pensa Andrea Russo (Diegi Motorsport). Un primo gradino del podio molto importante perché, con questa vittoria, l’italiano diventa il pilota che potrebbe più impensierire il leader di campionato Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) nella lotta per il titolo. Il canadese in questa gara è punito con un “Drive Through” per aver compiuto una manovra illecita proprio nei confronti di Russo e si deve perciò accontentare del sesto posto. A completare il podio ci pensano Alain Valente (Jenzer Motorsport) e Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport), quest’ultimo bravo ad approfi ttare dell’incidente che coinvolge i due piloti davanti a lui: Mattia Drudi (F&M) e Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Team). A tagliare per il primo il traguardo è stato, in realtà, Brandon Maisano (Prema Power), ma - come ripetuto più volte - il francese, per questioni di età, concorre solo per il Trofeo, quindi risulta primo in quella classifi ca.

Founded in 1972 by four friends, the Magione raceway today is an esteemed venue, appreciated for competitions, as well as for tests and driver development camps. Located in the Umbria region in the heart of Italy, it is close to Lake Trasimeno and gorgeous historical towns like Deruta and Gubbio.

RESULTS, TIMES, BRIEFINGSAfter every race the young F4 drivers gather in the Station, where Federal School instructors analyze each key phase down to the smallest detail. The briefi ng is a sort of “lesson” on correct behavior and on rule infractions that lead to penalties. The Station is also the place where track times and results are displayed on a big screen: free practice, qualifyings, and of course the feature races.

RISULTATI, TEMPI, BRIEFINGDopo ogni gara i giovani piloti vengono richiamati alla Station, dove gli istruttori della Scuola Federale analizzano, punto per punto, le fasi salienti. Il briefi ng è una sorta di “classe” dove i ragazzi capiscono quali sono i comportamenti leciti e quelli che, al contrario, potrebbero comportare delle penalizzazioni. La Station è anche il luogo dove vengono proiettati tutti i tempi e i risultati su grande schermo: prove libere, qualifi che e ovviamente le gare.
