Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth2

The action picks up where it left off: 5th round of the Italian F4 Championship Powered by Abarth, in race 1 Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) is again the fi rst one across the fi nish-line. The Canadian also scores the best lap, 1’35”322. His teammate Brandon Maisano actually closes ahead of him, by just 265 thousandths, but he only competes in the F4 Trophy and so doesn’t “count” for the championship rankings. In second place there is another “Prema man”, Takashi Kasai. The Japanese driver never posed a threat to the lead duo, but did a great job of managing the race and fending off a fast-charging Mattia Drudi (Adria Raceway by Malta). The Italian is the one who gets the lowest step of the podium. Behind him there is another Italian, Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec), whose 4th place fi nish rewards him with precious points in the general standings. The weekend starts on a bad note, instead, for Andrea Russo (Antonelli Motorsport), forced to retire after just three laps.

Ricominciamo da dove ci eravamo lasciati: in gara 1 della 5^ tappa dell’Italian F4 Championship Powered by Abarth è ancora Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) a tagliare per primo il traguardo. Il canadese è anche autore del giro più veloce, 1’35”322. In realtà a chiudere davanti a lui, per soli 265 millesimi, c’è il compagno di squadra Brandon Maisano, che però gareggia solo per l’F4 Trophy e dunque non “conta” ai fi ni della classifi ca di campionato. In seconda piazza spunta un altro “uomo Prema”, Takashi Kasai. Il giapponese non ha mai insidiato il duo di testa, ma è stato bravissimo a gestire la gara e a tenere a bada il rientrante Mattia Drudi (Adria Raceway by Malta). È proprio il pilota italiano ad occupare il gradino più basso del podio. A seguire troviamo un altro italiano, Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec), che con il 4° posto conquista punti preziosi per la classifi ca generale. Chi, al contrario, bene non va è Andrea Russo (Antonelli Motorsport), costretto al ritiro dopo appena tre giri.

In Vallelunga, in race 2 Keith Camilleri (Malta Formula Racing) is the one who starts ahead, thanks to the grid inversion of the top 10 of race 1. Yet, despite the advantage of pole position, he fails to improve on the 10th position scored in the fi rst match. In fact, he has a misfortunate start that sends him back to the rear of the fi eld. The ones who take advantage at fi rst are Edi Haxhiu (Cram Motorsport) and Andrea Fontana (Euronova Racing by Fortec), who take turns at the lead. It doesn’t last long, though, because Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec) takes over. There are frequent position changes also at mid-fi eld and the one who emerges from the pack is the “usual” Lance Stroll. After having his way over Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport) and his teammate Maisano, the Canadian sets off after the lead duo, which at the time had Fontana fi rst ahead of Pulcini. Stroll completes his winning dash on the last meters. He is followed by Fontana and, not Pulcini (who lost ground after a contact), but Alain Valente (Jenzer Motorsport).

A Vallelunga, in gara 2 è Keith Camilleri (Malta Formula Racing) a partire davanti, grazie all’inversione in griglia dei primi 10 di gara 1. Eppure, nonostante il vantaggio della pole position, non riesce a migliorare il 10° posto della prima corsa: la sua, infatti, è una partenza sfortunata che lo fa ripiombare in coda al gruppo. Ad approfi ttarne nelle prime battute sono Edi Haxhiu (Cram Motorsport) e Andrea Fontana (Euronova Racing by Fortec), capaci di alternarsi al comando. Dura poco, però, perchè a prendere la leadership ci pensa Leonardo Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec). Sono repentini i cambi anche a metà schieramento, dove a uscire alla distanza è il “solito” Lance Stroll. Dopo aver avuto la meglio su Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport) e il compagno Maisano, il canadese si butta all’inseguimento del duo di testa, che in quel momento vede Fontana primo davanti a Pulcini. Stroll completa l’opera proprio sul fi nale e vince. Lo seguono Fontana e, non Pulcini (che perde quota per contatto), ma Alain Valente (Jenzer Motorsport).

In race 3 Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) starts from pole, but loses some ground in the dash forward. It’s not a big loss, though, because he recovers by the end of lap one, smoldering the hopes of a hard-charging Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec), who had set in the stream of temporary leader Maisano (Prema Power Team). Following Stroll and Maisano is Mattia Drudi (Adria Raceway by Malta). From this moment on, the race lives on the duel between the two Prema teammates. Their exchange of blows, in fact, allows Pulcini to again fi nd space, though he has to contain Drudi’s attempts at an attack. Japanese driver Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Team) also hooks onto the quarter. At the end of this intense battle, one of the most exhilarating moments of the weekend, Stroll is again in the lead over Maisano, while Drudi and Kasai get ahead of Pulcini. With this last victory, Stroll de facto becomes Champion of the fi rst edition of the Italian F4 Championship Powered by Abarth, 2 rounds before the end. Hats off! Drudi and Kasai round off the race podium.

In gara 3 Lance Stroll (Prema Power Team) parte dalla pole, ma sullo scatto perde alcune posizioni. Poco male, le recupera nel corso del primo giro, spezzando le speranze di un arrembante Pulcini (Euronova Racing by Fortec), che si era messo in scia al momentaneo leader Maisano (Prema Power Team). Dietro a Stroll e Maisano troviamo invece Mattia Drudi (Adria Raceway by Malta). Da quel momento la gara vive sul duello tra i due compagni Prema. Nel loro scambio di attacchi, infatti, ritrova spazio anche Pulcini, sebbene debba contenere i tentativi di affondo di parte di Drudi. Ai quattro si aggancia poi anche il giapponese Takashi Kasai (Prema Power Team). Alla fi ne di questa intensa battaglia, uno dei più esaltanti momenti del weekend, è di nuovo Stroll a prendere la testa ai danni di Maisano, mentre Drudi e Kasai hanno la meglio su Pulcini. Con quest’ultima vittoria, Stroll diventa di fatto Campione della prima edizione dell’Italian F4 Championship Powered by Abarth, con due round di anticipo. Chapeau! Drudi e Kasai completano il podio.

It was immediately clear that this could be concretely possible only if the series could guarantee high performance levels at sustainable costs. Engine wise, the choice fell on a 160 HP Abarth with a top price of 7,000 euro that could reach a covered distance of 10,000 kilometers without any inspections.

Fu subito chiaro che ciò era concretamente possibile solo se si potevano garantire alte prestazioni a fronte di costi sostenibili. Per il motore si è deciso, dunque, per un Abarth da 160 CV con un prezzo di circa 7.000 euro, capace di raggiungere una percorrenza di 10.000 chilometri senza revisioni.

MODELThe series is powered by the 1.4 Turbo T-Jet, 160 HP model, which meets the guidelines set by the FIA. This engine is derived from the one that powers standard 500 street cars and that is also used on Abarth 500 and 695 Assetto Corse that compete in the Abarth Selenia trophies. This impressive operation follows the Scorpion company’s “original formula” made of respect for tradition and for Italian artisanship, technical development, performance enhancement and pure racing passion.

THE BRANDThe Italian motor company was founded in 1949 by Carlo Abarth. Born to support a race team, today the brand is present in several sectors of the four-wheel industry and is also involved in the market of high-performance vehicles. The honor and burden of serving as offi cial provider of the Italian F4 Championship mirrors the new company mission: to “make racing more democratic” so that an ever greater number of talents may grow. For instance, in 2013 over 150 drivers took part in 50 races in 5 different championships and the top 4 of the Abarth Selenia Europe and Italy Trophies were all under the age of 22.
