Geography of Italy
There are just a few geographical landmarks that you should know when partaking in a
beginning Italian course.
In comparison to the US being composed of states, Italy is composed of 20 regions:
https://www.lifeinitaly.com/recent-stories/northern-regions-of-italy-summary/
**make sure you know the names and locations of the regions of Italy
Italy is a peninsula, meaning it is surrounded by water on 3 sides. This makes knowing the
names of the bodies of water surrounding Italy a critical task.
Here is a great map showing the location of the bodies of water surrounding Italy:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionian_Sea
Italian Culture
There is not a lot of study on Italian culture done in a beginning Italian course, as many of the
units are dedicated to learning the language itself. With this being said, you still may partake in
projects or other presentations involving aspects of Italian culture.
After taking two years of Italian, I believe that the best way to familiarize yourself with the
cultural aspects discussed in beginning italian courses is to go out and experience the culture for
yourself!
Some possible ideas to familiarize yourself with the culture;
- Watch an Italian movie or show- I recommend summertime (an Italian show featured on
netflix)
- Go to an authentic Italian restaurant-This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the
type of food served (this is also great for learning certain food vocabulary and improving
speaking skills when using Italian to order food)
- Make a fake vacation itinerary for a trip to Italy (or a real one :)) - This allows you to
learn more about famous attractions and landmarks in Italy
- Make an authentic Italian dish- A great way to learn more about the way food in Italy is
prepared
- Do some research on an Italian celebrity- A cool way to familiarize yourself with some
notable Italian figures
