According to legend, the island oncewas home to dragons. Today, travelers cometo admire the spectacular frescoes in thefourth-century basilica and soak up the island’s serenity. PASSAGE OVER THE ALPSOf Switzerland’s four major scenic train journeys,the Bernina Express is both the highest railcrossing of the Alps and the only Swiss rail routeto traverse the range from north to south. A narrow-gauge line of the Rhaetian Railway, itascends to a height of 7,391 feet (2,253 meters)at the Bernina Pass along switch-back tunnelsand graded spirals. The Brusio Viaduct loops into a 360-degree curve as the train climbs up a7 percent grade. On the stretch from St. Moritzvia Pontresina to Tirano, Italy, the train’spanoramic carriages pass Morteratsch Glacier,the Grum Alp and picturesque Poschiavo Valley.

PASSAGE OVER THE ALPSOf Switzerland’s four major scenic train journeys,the Bernina Express is both the highest railcrossing of the Alps and the only Swiss rail routeto traverse the range from north to south. A narrow-gauge line of the Rhaetian Railway, itascends to a height of 7,391 feet (2,253 meters)at the Bernina Pass along switch-back tunnelsand graded spirals. The Brusio Viaduct loops into a 360-degree curve as the train climbs up a7 percent grade.
