Enjoy views of pristine lakes and picture-perfect Swiss villages. Cross the Italian border and arrive inthe town of Tremezzo, which sits on the shoreof Lake Como. Cruise to Como. Continue to Stresa, where you will check in to the Hotel La Palma.Local Flavor: En route to Stresa, stop inBellagio for lunch.

DAY SEVEN B | LBORROMEAN ISLANDSEducational Focus: The Development ofthe Lake District. Become better acquainted with Italy’s Lake District. Thishaven for wealthy aristocrats has Alpinepeaks, fragrant gardens and crystalline glacial lakes.

According to legend, the island oncewas home to dragons. Today, travelers cometo admire the spectacular frescoes in thefourth-century basilica and soak up the island’s serenity. PASSAGE OVER THE ALPSOf Switzerland’s four major scenic train journeys,the Bernina Express is both the highest railcrossing of the Alps and the only Swiss rail routeto traverse the range from north to south. A narrow-gauge line of the Rhaetian Railway, itascends to a height of 7,391 feet (2,253 meters)at the Bernina Pass along switch-back tunnelsand graded spirals. PASSAGE OVER THE ALPSOf Switzerland’s four major scenic train journeys,the Bernina Express is both the highest railcrossing of the Alps and the only Swiss rail routeto traverse the range from north to south.
