- excellent knowledge of the Italian language, to be tested before starting the course.

SMM 02

COURSE DENOMINATION Regular Course

COURSE LOCATION Naval Academy – Leghorn COURSE OBJECTIVES Training young men and women who aspire to be naval officers

COURSE CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE

Aimed at training officers to embark and take command of naval units and/or operating entities of the armed forces. Upon completion of the three year course of study, officers will be awarded a degree in Maritime & Naval Science. Subsequently, officers attend qualification and training courses & on board Italian naval warships, earning 40 hours of course credit for a subsequent Masters Degree in Maritime & Naval Science.

TYPICAL COURSE DURATION

3 academic years, 8/10 months devoted to training and qualification courses. On request of respective countries, foreign attendees may return to Italy after six years to attend a 12/24 month master’s degree programme in Marine and Naval Science. Starting from the 2019/2020 academic year, there will be a continuing course, as officers from year group 2016/17 will join attendees of more senior year groups. Foreign Students attend a preparatory course at one of the two joint language school, Loreto or Perugia, with a tentative start in March/April. Upon getting through the final Italian language proficiency exam (August) and meeting all physical standards, admittance will be granted to the 1st class of the Italian Naval Academy Basic Officer Course. This course consists of at least two summer training campaigns onboard Italian Navy training ships, and training modules to be followed at specific Navy operational units, each lasting 10 weeks.

COURSE PREREQUISITES

- High school diploma or equivalent, preferably from a nautical or scientific school, enabling enrolment at university faculties. Diplomas should be submitted in the original copy, with attached Italian translation, and be validated by relevant national school systems.

- Good psycho-physical fitness to meet requirements for an officer serving in the Italian Navy. Upon arrival, foreign students will be subject to a health screening at the Naval Academy medical facilities.

- Age between 18-22 years. - Good knowledge of Italian language, to be tested before starting the course.

SMM 03

COURSE DENOMINATION Basic Regular Course and Application Course (Naval Engineering)

COURSE LOCATION Naval Academy – Leghorn

COURSE OBJECTIVES Training naval engineering officers

COURSE CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE

Course aimed at training officers to operate ship propulsion plants. Upon successful completion of the study and training programmes, officers will be awarded a degree in Naval Engineering. A percentage of officers will be awarded a degree in civil and environmental engineering for follow-on employment in the infrastructural sector.

TYPICAL COURSE DURATION

6 academic years (4 at the Naval Academy and 2 at a conventional state university). This course consists of at least two summer training campaigns onboard Italian Navy training ships, and training modules to be followed at specific Navy operational units, each lasting 10 weeks.

SMM 04

COURSE DENOMINATION Regular Navy Staff Course

COURSE LOCATION Naval War College - Venice

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Provide attendees with adequate knowledge and skills required to development, planning and conduct of staff activities related to Navy and Joint central/peripheral Commands, and within national, foreign and international organisations. Participants should acquire: - main principles of the ‘Working Methods and Operating Planning Procedures’ currently

in use at national and NATO Commands (notably NATO COPD); - written and oral ‘Communications’ skills, with specific reference to forms of

communications in use at headquarters, strategic communication, and elements of public relations;

- basic principles of ‘Doctrine’ and ‘Strategy’, with a focus on the international environment in which Armed Forces (Navy in particular) operate;

- basic principles of ‘Management’ and ‘International, Maritime and Humanitarian Law’.

COURSE CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE

The training course is based on an incremental level of complexity of the topics. The learning process includes: - classes held by trained officers; - additional classes/conferences held by subject matter experts with solid academic and

military background or widely known for their proficiency at the topic; - individual and group exercises and syndicates; - attendance at specific seminars and conferences planned, organized and held at the

Institute. Attendees’ performances will be assessed through intermediate tests for each subject, and a final overall examination.

TYPICAL COURSE DURATION Approximately 13 weeks, 3 sessions per year (Sep-Dec, Jan-Apr, Apr-Jul)

COURSE DENOMINATION 'B' Class Hydrographic Surveying Qualification

COURSE LOCATION Italian Navy Hydrographic Service – Genoa

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Providing attendees with the basic knowledge and skills required to carry out the duties of oceanography officers embarked on hydrographic / oceanographic survey vessels or stationed at oceanography research centres.

COURSE CURRICULUM The course consists of conferences, stages and educational visits to various military and civilian institutions.

TYPICAL COURSE DURATION

7 months (November - May): 20 week course + 4 weeks for training and tests.

SMM 06

COURSE DENOMINATION Specialization Course in Hydrography and Oceanography (IDO)

COURSE LOCATION Italian Navy Hydrographic Service - Genoa

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Attendees get a 2nd level Master Degree in Marine Geomatics, and acquire theoretical and practical skills required to: − plan and supervise the execution and validation of oceanographic and

hydrographic surveys, fulfilling relative duties onboard hydrographic vessels or at hydrographic services;

− contribute to the development of doctrine and practices in the field of hydrography, oceanography and nautical science;

hold teaching positions in the discipline of hydrography and oceanography at military training institutions. A 2nd level Master Degree in Marine Geomatics is a prerequisite to the acquisition of the category ‘A’ international certificate– Hydrographic Surveying.

COURSE CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE

2 academic years, scheduled as follows: − 1st phase (theory): 22 weeks (courses/exercises: 18 weeks + training and

tests: 4 weeks) − 14 weeks: practical training onboard hydrographic / oceanographic survey

vessels, or within hydrographic and geodetic expeditions, or at the Italian Navy Hydrographic Service;

− 2nd phase (theory): 27 weeks (courses/exercises: 27 weeks + training and tests: 5 weeks)

− 8 week specialization phase (courses/exercises: 5 weeks + training and tests: 3 weeks)

COURSE DENOMINATION Regular Course and Application Course for Chief Petty Officers

COURSE LOCATION Navy Petty Officer School - Taranto

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is aimed at providing attendees with the knowledge required to be employed as Chief Petty Officers for carrying out 2nd level tasks such as controller and/or shift foreman, maintenance staff supervisor, fiduciary of warrant officer aboard small units with the possibility of achieving 3rd and 4th levels assignments, involving coordination and high-specialised charges. Upon completion of the course, the Chief Petty Officers can obtain a three-year academic degree.

COURSE CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE

The Chief Petty Officer regular course consists of three years: 1st year : ‘Basic Education’ and ‘Specialisation/Preparatory’ programme, and 1st year of Academic and Specialisation Studies:

• Combat System Technicians • Harbour Pilots • Qualified Nurses

Upon completion of this year the naval training campaign is carried out. 2nd year: 2nd year of Academic and Specialist Studies; different studies for each specialisation:

• Combat System Technicians • Harbour Pilots • Qualified Nurses

1st application and specialisation year (3rd year) this year is aimed at obtaining the three-year degree, carrying out differential studies for each specialisation:

• Combat System Technicians • Harbour Pilots • Qualified Nurses

The course is aimed at: • improving the theoretic/practical skills as well as basic

technical knowledge, in order to enable attendees to command deep-sea vessels’ (without no distance restrictions off coasts) and to fulfil the required tasks;

The whole course consist in 19 weeks devoted to teaching activities + 3 weeks for examinations. It is held in two phases; during the first one the following subjects are dealt with:

fitting and manoeuvering); • professional maritime knowledge

The Helicopter Technical Specialist Course envisages both theoretic and practical training, in order to provide the knowledge and skills required for the attainment of the Military Helicopter/Aircraft Specialist Licence (SAER). The Course intends to train technicians to perform relevant functions within operational Units.

COURSE CURRICULUM

The programme includes both theoretic and practical activities, aimed at providing knowledge and developing capabilities required for the operation and maintenance of systems and equipments. During the training course, attendees are also required to get a ditching certification (at the Maristaeli Catania ‘Dilbert Dunker’, or alternatively Maristaeli Luni ‘Helo Dunker’ facilities), otherwise they cannot complete the course. Educational/Training activities: 30 working weeks. COURSE OBJECTIVES

Theoretical Phase including three types of training: specific Cell, Power Plant and Avionics Systems of the aircraft at issue;

The Course is aimed at providing attendees with EH-101 type-conversion, along with basic theoretical and practical knowledge for the use of helicopter sensors. The Course should enable: • Pilots to fly the aircraft in day/ night VFR, IFR and formation flying. • System Operators to acquire skills required to use the Italian Navy EH-101 sensors and equipment both autonomously and in coordination with the crew.

COURSE CURRICULUM

- The Pilots Course consists of three phases introduced by theoretical indoctrination (at MARISTAELI CATANIA) for a total of about 32 Simulator Missions to be executed at the FCMS Simulator (at MARISTAELI LUNI) out of a planned total of 49. For pilots coming from another Italian Navy flight line, the program envisages 16 Simulator FCMS Missions out of a planned total of 26. - The Operators System Course consists of a period of practical training introduced by theoretical indoctrination (at MARISTAELI CATANIA) including a total of about 34 Simulator Missions to be executed at the FCMS Simulator (at MARISTAELI LUNI).
