THE GREAT BEAUTYo f Rome
I T A L Y
Rome (Italy), a corner of the garden of Oranges
The Academy Award-Oscar 2014 won by the Italian movie “The Great Beauty” put a spotlight on a number of not-so-known attractions in Rome. So much attention led the Municipality to create a new itinerary in the footsteps of Jep Gambardella, the main character of Paolo Sorrentino’s feature film. A secret Rome is to be discovered, sometimes unknown even to residents (sometimes so famous to pass unnoticed to everyone, anyway), but surely full of the unique Rome charme.
There are the views from the Gianicolo hill and the “fontanone” (the big fountain of Acqua Paola) from the first scene of the movie, the intricate tree-lined roads of the cemetery of Verano, Borromini’s perspective in Palazzo Spada’s courtyard.
The itinerary includes also the basilica of Santa Sabina, the garden of Oranges with its view of the “Cupolone” (St. Peter’s dome), the massive walls along the Tiber, Via Veneto street, the Appian Way with the Roman aqueducts. And then there’s the wonderful Villa Medici with its luxurious gardens, overlooking Rome from the Pincio hill from the same place where, two thousands years ago, the gardens of Lucullus used to enchant all visitors.
