I’ve got a great idea BUT.....
GPQ Immunisation/NiGP network meeting May 2010
How am I going to make it a reality?????
Why is it hard working in this Network?
• Funding• Contractual obligations – often very specific• The focus of the Board and Senior Management• Multiple programs to manage• Limited time• Multiple stakeholders to manage and please
And the list goes on…..
But generally it’s safe to say we are hard working, passionate and care about primary health care
Getting more from what we already have
• Grants• Scholarships
• Awards• Budget submissions
From who?• Pharma• Core funding• SBO/AGPN• Tertiary institutions• Governments• Other institutions

How.....?• Write down every good idea• Talk about it with your peers• Is there a need for this project?• Know what you want to achieve – your overall objectives
and specific aims• Survey the current and past landscape
Has this been done before? Did it work? How would it need to be adapted for my local
situation?
Is there literature/similar reports out there?• Engage your organisation and
partner organisations• Have a plan
(– including a budget)
Writing the proposal
The Background
General to the specific - Like an inverse pyramid
International
National
State/Territory
Local
• Why is this such a good idea?• What are the problems faced?• Has anyone else used this approach?
Did it work? If yes – how can you do it better? If not – what would you do to make it work?
• Reference!!!
What’s next? – overall objective and specific aims
To raise awareness of the importance of immunisation before, during and after pregnancy amongst health
professionals and consumers.
1) To deliver continuing professional development to general practitioners, obstetricians and other health professionals about the importance of vaccinating this target group of women.
2) To develop an awareness campaign and appropriate resources for use in general practice and obstetricians’ rooms in the Territory and surrounding region for the target group.
The budget – never underestimate and talk to your finance officer
Make your timeline realistic – expect the unexpected
Plan your evaluation before you start - How will you measure any impact?
A few other tips...
• Assume no prior knowledge of the reader• Get support from others before you submit• Be prepared to meet funders ½ way• Talk to the target audience during the process• If not successful – don’t shelve it – rework and
try again• Enjoy the process – this can make your middle
of the night idea a reality.
