I see the narration as crucial and necessary attribute of our existence into which every element of the reality is clothed - from a nail to a city. Hence my works are equipped with a plot, often very personal one. I am inspired by stories, because I firmly believe in a text. I run both some private shamanic practices and diversionary activities in the city. I deal with a magical dimension of our existen- ce, the simultaneity of the world, André Breton’s objective chance and subtleties of the reality. A multitude of these themes abounds often with complex projects, responding to bothering me questions through various media which I often have to learn completely anew. +48 609 483 054 [email protected] http://www.izabelaleska.com/ portfolio

zofia2015

The family story is about my great-aunt Zofia who lived in a wooden hut with hand-painted roses. She was a half-sister of my grandfather - the eleventh child. In this history there was a displacement. Another relationship and a new child disrupt cer-tain order. All the brothers are stepbrothers and a cousin who should be the same age is about to die. Some roles are distorted. The language responds to this state of things. Words take a journey and the rose is red. Trails blurre, memories fade. In the absence of evidence a language repetition becomes the only possible (because the only real) content. The rose fades. It remains to repeat stubbornly Zofia is Zofia, roses are roses and the story is just a story. I do not get the answers to the question who Zofia was and whether the story with roses is true. The rose finally blooms blue.

subjective walks2014

I go out into the city. I savor the act of walking itself and I record the exact course of each walk. It results in a linear image, which becomes a form of an urban drawing. The city becomes a source of deci-sions. I appeal to the surrealistic concept of an objective coincidence. The decision on pursuing for something, even very elusive gives vent to the inner impulses that coex-ist with the reality. I trace the magie circon-stancielle – circumstantial magic and I collect objets trouvé (found objects).

the work was created during a residency in Institut für Alles Mögliche in Berlin

a point that took a walk2014

Paul Klee once said that the line is a point that went for a walk. I take the part of this point, I’m going through the city and behind me I leave stretched cotton thread, which I develop from my coat pocket. This thread follows the steps of my wandering and tells the story of my presence. I walk like a lunatic where the intuition leads me. The night space seems to be different, but thanks to the threads tied to the starting point, you can always come back safely. The pedestrians do not notice the thread which runs behind them, blocks their movements, engages with zippers, unpleasantly brushes the surface of their skin. I come back com-pulsively to the same places to rebuild the structure which is still being destroyed.

I’m interested in the human body and in particular bodily detritus (nails, eyelashes, hair) which can be described as a sort of a poetry in time. I consider the body as a kind of perpetuum mobile and a sculptural object. Skin products always return to the same point as in the mathe-matical travelling salesman problem. They provide evidence of our body’s sisyphean work. We get rid of them with absolutely no regrets although they are witnesses of everyday moments, sponges of emotions and experiences.

white silesia2012

The project involved the exploration of subjective memories, opinions, impres-sions of the inhabitants of Silesia (region in southern Poland). These are the stories sometimes heard, perhaps not always true, in which the main role is played - as it was stated in the request for which I asked my Silesian friends - white mate-rial. And it’s the white color which is the most important to the whole project. It becomes a metaphor for relativity and it turns out to be the most subjective color. Thus, a certain feature becomes merely a pretext which anyone can fill with con-tent that one only wants.

me it’s you2012

I wander through the city. I search for interesting links between the names on the mailboxes. These associations are sometimes very personal, sometimes naive, but always subjective. At times the task is easier, but sometimes it gets really hard. I am acting completely intuitively but I always try to find a real, deep, sub-jective relations between the names. I swap the name tags on mailboxes be-longing to the residents of the buildings. I’m interested in a subtle action on the outside of the building, that can have huge effects which however I’ll never know, because I do not enter the building physically. I only count on some effects - maybe neighbours will speak to each other for the first time ever about the sus-picious event, maybe someone will quarrel and maybe someone else will fall in love?

our lady blueberry2012

A very personal story about betrayal, based on facts. Dealing with a painful experience of betrayal in a double form. The man betrayed, but also a friend betrayed. She had a lovely, fruity name. We sat together on the same bench for the Holy Communion. Memories do not want to leave like berries stains. Accidentally found fragment of Jadwiga Sawicka’s work with a the text with a mantra structure and subtly trans-formed church hymn are used as medias that help to express emotions.
