Greetings in Christ and Happy New

Year!! Last weekend, we learned

that over the last couple days most

of the retired priests in our area

have tested positive for Covid. We

ask that you pray for these priests,

that they will remain healthy.

We also ask for your patience: our

entire region is dependent on these

priests to help us with Mass cover-

age and, as a result, you may find

at different parishes in our area, that

when you show up for Mass, it’s a communion service. We

obviously hope to avoid this, but it may be impossible to

avoid.

This is also a reminder of the importance of wearing

masks and sanitizing our hands as an act of love and

charity for the community.

I would like to give a big thank you to the Knights of Co-

lumbus for their participation in leading the Consecration

Prayer at Masses last weekend!

This year we invite you to join us in the tradition of

“chalking the door” to celebrate the Epiphany. The Epipha-

ny marks the arrival of the magi to the place where Jesus

was born and the end of Christmas. We will be providing

you with the prayer and blessed chalk to participate at

your home as you leave Mass this weekend. Since the

chalk is blessed, any unused portion should be buried to

be disposed of properly.

In closing, please, please pray for our priests health and

help us by being patient and understanding!

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

Celebrate the first Americanborn saint! St. Elizabeth Ann

Seton was born in New York City in the late 1700s and

raised Episcopalian. She married William Seton. Together

they had five children. He fell ill, and the family moved to

Italy for his health. While there, Elizabeth discovered Ca-

tholicism. Her husband eventually

passed away, but God had more plans

for the Seton family. Elizabeth felt a

further stirring in her heart. She

opened a school for girls in 1808. The

calling grew. Within a year, Elizabeth

had founded the Sisters of Charity, the

first community for religious women

established in the United States. Their

work established the first Catholic

school system in the country. On her

feast day this January 4th, pray for our

teachers and students!

Bob & Caroline Davis by Davis & Edmonds family

Thanks to all of you who remembered your loved ones

with the special gift of altar flowers. Those listed are in our

prayers as we enjoy the beauty of our church at Christ-

mastime, thanking God for His Son, Jesus, and for the

lives of the people being remembered. Additional below:

Altar Flowers

Sometimes people

choose to remember a

loved one who is de-

ceased or to honor a spe-

cial occasion by donating

flowers for the altar. We

order from our regular florist so that the arrangements are

a standard size and match the décor of the season. The

cost is $40. Currently the January 9/10, 16/17, 30/31, Feb-

ruary 6/7, 13/14, March 13/14 weekends are open for

Altar Flowers.

If you would like to remember your loved ones in this spe-

cial way and help make our church beautiful, please call

Theresa in the parish office, 6944891, ext. 2211.

Everyday Stewardship

Recognize God in Your Ordinary

Wise Men See God in the Simple Things

If you’re on social media, you have probably seen a meme

going around that features this quote: “God has a plan for

your life. The enemy has a plan for your life. Be ready for

both. Just be wise enough to know which one to battle and

which one to embrace.”

There were certainly two competing plans for the Magi:

God’s and Herod’s. And, wise as they supposedly were, it

wasn’t entirely easy for the Magi to discern which was

which.

After all, Herod posed as a friend. He offered the Magi

hospitality and kindness. Though the Gospel doesn’t say

so, he probably flattered them and appealed to every mor-

al weakness he could observe in them. In his palace, they

must have felt great physical comfort rest and tables of

plenty on what was an otherwise long and treacherous

journey.

But if the Magi were honest with themselves, I’ll bet they

would have admitted that, regardless of Herod’s charm,

they felt a gnawing sense of doubt while in his presence.

When they looked upon the Christ Child, born in a stable

without any of the comforts of the world or protections of

wealth, they probably felt the opposite. They probably felt

safe.

The Magi were lucky enough to have the right plan spelled

out for them in a dream, but for the rest of us, it’s enough

to remember this: God’s plan is often the one that leads us

to places of great simplicity, great humility and great love.

Let’s have the wisdom to view power with suspicion, and

innocence with admiration.
