The di:;tri'ct in which this collection waa made is fairly well known nl'llitltolugirally, but the only paper· actually cle::d ing wi th the .area is th 1r. of Au~Utit ~1iiller, "Die Ornis der Jnsel 8alanga ", 1882, P LJ · 1-96: Naumburg a Saale, originally published as a doctoral dis-sertation an.:l appar·ently reprinted in the "Jour nul filr Ornithologie," 1882.

Large collections wertl made in the district by J. Darling on bt'I Ja!f of A 0. 8 ume, which were the subject of scattered notices l.n "Stray Fo,Lthers," u.nrl wh ich are now incorporated in the British Museu111, while the island of Salanga was also visited by Emst Hartert who has made a few remarks on its Fauna (~ov. Zoo!., IX, pp. 222-226).

In the present papet· t!Hee more subspecies are diagnosed , viz :-Oyanops mystacophnnes aura.ntiij?'ons} Mesohucco dnva1tceli stua1·ti nobis, Ohloropsis cyanopogon septent?·ionalis

while two species, Pericrocotus rosetts (Vieill.), Peric?'Ocotus cantc•nensis ( Sv;in h.) ,

are recorded for the fit·st time fl'orn the Malay Peninsula. though the b.tter had been collected in Trang as far back as 1910.

The collections were nuicle by native collector·s without European superintendence; and details of soft pat'ts, which men of this type can-not note with suffici ent accuracy to be worth recording, are thP.refore lacki·ng.

The localities visited will not be found in any or•din:1ry map and can only be traced in t.he Admiralty Chart No. 2492 and the publi-cations of the Siamese Sur~·ey Oflice, anc1 we have therefo1·e supplied an outline map on which the route of our party is marked.

The collect.ion was mnQ.e belween December 20th and Februat·y 18th, and t.hereforfl compt·ises a considerl\hl e Humber of seasonal visitors which would not be founJ later in th e yr:a.r. 'rhe occurrence of the comparati \'ely ra.re Cuckoo Falcn 1t , Haza loplwtes, in large numbers iH

form . A r e-exam ination of the type se ri es of D. Cb. siarnensis Kloss

(Ibis 1918, p. 2:1f:i ) shows th :L t they are prohably not. conspecific with

t th is b ird.
