Jackson State University has a distinguished history, rich in the tradition of educating young men and women for leadership, having undergone seven name changes as it grew and developed. Founded as Natchez Seminary in 1877 by the American Baptist Home mission Society, the school was established as Natchez, Mississippi “for the moral, religious and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states.” In November 1882, the school was moved to Jackson; in March 1899, the curriculum was expanded and the name was changed to Jackson College.
The state assumed support of the college in 1940, assigning to it the mission of training teachers. Subsequently, between 1953 and 1956, the curriculum was expanded to include a graduate program and bachelor’s programs in the arts and sciences; the name was then changed to Jackson State College in 1956.
Further expansion of the curriculum and a notable building program preceded the elevation of Jackson State College to university status on March 15, 1974. In 1979, Jackson State was officially designated the Urban University of the State of Mississippi. Presently, Jackson State University, a public, coeducational institution, is supported by legislative appropriations supplemented by student fees and federal and private grants.
Vision
Building on its historic mission of empowering diverse students to become leaders, Jackson State University will become recognized as a challenging, yet nurturing, state-of-the-art technologically-infused intellectual community. Students and faculty will engage in creative research, participate in interdisciplinary and multi-institutional/ organizational collaborative learning teams and serve the global community.
Mission
The University produces technologically-advanced, diverse, ethical, global leaders who think critically, address societal problems and compete effectively.

director of athleticsWheeler Brown
Wheeler Brown was announced on December 10, 2015 as Jackson State University’s Director of Athletics. Brown has more than two decades of athletics administration experience. Prior to coming to JSU, Brown served the Associate Director of Athletics at Coppin State University from 2013-2015. He also served as the Director of Athletics at his alma mater North Carolina A&T State University from 2007-2010, where under his leadership the Lady Aggies basketball team won the MEAC championship in 2009, as well as making an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Lady Aggies also posted wins over Wake Forest and UNC-Charlotte during the 2010 WNIT Tournament.
Prior to Brown being named the Interim Director of Athletics at JSU, he served as the university’s Associate Athletic Director for Compliance.
Brown accepted his first collegiate athletics administration position in 1996, when he was named Assistant Athletics Director and Assistant men’s basketball coach at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia. Two years later he was promoted to head men’s basketball coach. In 2001, Brown was named an Associate Athletics Director at Bowie State University. In 2002, he returned to the NCA&T Athletics Department. While at NCA&T Brown was one of 12 people, from an applicant pool of over 300, to be accepted into the NCAA Fellows Program in 2008. The program (currently called the NCAA Pathway Program), which is sponsored by the NCAA, pairs minorities and women who aspire to Athletic Directors at Division I programs with an executive mentor who is a Division I Athletic Director.
In addition to completing the NCAA Fellows program, Brown also graduated from the Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males in 2005. He has also been a member of the NCAA Athletic Certification Committee, which oversees the certification of every Division I athletics program.
Brown began his professional career as a teacher and coach at C.L. Harper High School in Atlanta, Ga. After a four-year stay at Harper, he returned to the Baltimore area in 1983 and worked as a Recreational Therapist at a group home for adolescents before accepting the head men’s basketball coaching position at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland in 1987. Over 11 seasons he compiled a 191-110 record as a collegiate head coach.
Brown is the only one of his three brothers to graduate high school. He credits his sister Edna Parker for inspiring him to attend college. She was the first in the family to earn a college education when she earned an undergraduate and graduate degree from Coppin State University.
Brown played for the Aggies football team from 1974-78, and graduated from N.C. A&T in 1979 with a degree in health and physical education. Brown, a native of Baltimore, Md., was a part of N.C. A&T’s first MEAC football championship in 1975. Brown was an all-conference performer at offensive tackle for the Aggies and was inducted into the N.C. A&T Hall of Fame in 2003.

Jackson State Soccer Complex
Home of the Lady Tiger Soccer Team
The Jackson State Lady Tiger Soccer Complex was completed in 2002 just in time for the JSU Women’s Soccer team’s inaugural season. The complex has a 300 seating capacity and ample space for picnicing and lounging. The soccer complex is on the corner of University Bouelvard and Walter Payton Drive.
The City of Jackson was founded in 1821 at the site of a trading post situated on a bluff on the west bank of the Pearl River. Legend tells that the trading post was operated by a French-Canadian trader named Louis LeFleur, and the town originally was called Le-Fleur’s Bluff.
The Mississippi State Legislature wanted the seat of government moved out of the Nat-chez area and into a more central location. It commissioned three men to locate an ideal place for a town that could become the state capital.
After surveying areas north and east of present day Jackson, Thomas Hinds, James Pat-ton and William Lattimore proceeded southwest along the Pearl River until they reached LeFleur’s Bluff in Hinds County. They reported to the General Assembly that this location had “beautiful and healthful surroundings, good water, abundant timber, navigable wa-ters, and proximity to the Natchez Trace.”
A legislative act dated November 28, 1821, authorized the location to be the permanent seat of government for the state and ordered that it be named Jackson in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson who would later become the seventh President of the United States.
During the Civil War, the town was ravaged and burned three times by Union troops un-der the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Surprisingly, the City Hall, which was built in 1846 for less than $8,000, was spared the torch. It was rumored that Sherman bypassed the building, which is still the working seat of municipal government, because it housed a Masonic Lodge and that the Union leader was a Mason. More likely, its use as a hospital was the reason the building was not burned.

stephen peck, head Coach1st Year • Butler University
Stephen Peck became Jackson State University’s third head women’s soccer coach on July 1, 2016.
Peck, who has over 15 years of head coaching experience, has an excellent resume. He won a JUCO national championship, a .659 winning percentage, and has qualified for post-season play in 13 of his 15 year head coaching career. He has coached 55 All-Conference players, 59 All-Region players, five regional Players of the Year and 11 NSCAA All-Americans.
Peck comes to JSU from Oakland City University (Indiana) where he served as the head men’s soccer coach for four seasons. During his tenure with the Mighty Oaks he compiled a 35-38-6 record (.551). In his first season with Oakland City, Peck guided the Oaks to a 10-6 record in 2012. That season the team achieved some program firsts, such as double-digit regular season victories and defeating the No. 10 ranked Lindenwood University (NCAA Division II). That season he also led the program to its highest regular season winning percentage in school history, as well as having student-athletes recognize by the NCCAA, NSCAA and the NCAA. The NCCAA honored two young men as All-Midwest Region performers and one as a scholar-athlete. The NSCAA honored three young men as Scholar All-North Region academic. The NCAA recorded nationally that Peck had Aljosa Stankovic finish 5th in assists per game and tied for 9th in total assists, while Nick Little and Nico Gercke finished 24th and 36th in points per game, 18th and 28th in goals per game while tying for 39th in goals scored and 49th in total points.
The 2013 version of the Mighty Oaks saw an overhauled roster, featuring just eight returning players, joined by 14 new faces. Despite the changes, the Oaks managed to eclipse the school record for a season, going 11-6-2, while reaching the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I Midwest Regional Tournament Championship game, where they lost 2-1 at Spring Arbor University.Prior to coaching at Oakland City, Peck coached at Culver-Stockton College (Canton, Missouri) for two seasons. During his tenure there he led the Wildcats to a 2010 record of 6-11-1 (.361), tied for the most single season wins and was the highest winning percentage in over a decade. The Wildcats had six All-Conference players, three NSCAA Academic All-Central Region members and one Dakstats NAIA All-American student under Peck’s guidance. The 2010 team was honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic All-American Team award. Peck graduated 100% of his soccer student-athletes while at Culver-Stockton College.Prior to Culver-Stockton, Peck coached at Jefferson College (Hillsboro, Missouri), where he was hired to start the National Junior College Collegiate Association (NJCAA) Division I program in 2005. He coached the Vikings for four seasons, leading them to a 73-20-7 (.785) overall record, including winning the 2006 NJCAA Division Junior College National Championship. The national championship was and is the first and only in the college’s history. During his four years, the Vikings won one conference championship, four Region XVI championships, made four Sweet Sixteen, three Elite Eight, one Final Four and one national championship game appearance. Peck’s last season, the Vikings finished with a 19-4-1 record and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament.

In 2013, Peck and his 2006 National Championship team were inducted into the Jefferson College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He led the Rebels to a 2003 NJCAA third place finish at the national tournament, won four consecutive Region XVI championships, made four Sweet Sixteen appearances, one Elite Eight and one Final Four, while posting a 74-30-8 record (.712) in five seasons with the program. In his last season the Rebels were 19-3 and finished third in the nation, which is still the highest ranking in the institution’s history. Peck boasts an overall NJCAA record is 147-50-15 (.746) and an impressive 93% graduation rate.
Peck was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas National Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2006. In 2003, he became the first NJCAA Division I soccer coach to win the honor without winning the national championship. In nine seasons as a NJCAA head coach, Peck garnered two Midwest Community College Athletic Conference championships and eight Region XVI championships in a row (2001-2008). His teams made eight Sweet Sixteen appearances in a row, four Elite Eight appearances, two Final Four appearances and captured one National Championship.
