JACOB’SPILLOWD A N C EFEST IVAL 2018

Dear Friends,

What is in store for Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2018? While we’ve been busy hosting artist residencies in the new Perles Family Studio and Pillow Pop-Up performances in Pittsfield, we have also been preparing for the excitement that only summer can bring.

Last summer, we announced Vision ‘22, our five-year strategic plan to become a year-round center for dance research and development while enhancing our

engagement with Berkshire County in new ways—and we’ve already made great progress. Our work helps develop new artists and audiences for dance, while our choices honor the rich history that has propelled us for over eight decades. This is reflected in our 2018 season, where you’ll see a number of premiering works that were developed through the new Pillow Lab, alongside companies like Houston Ballet and PHILADANCO! that have not performed here in over 20 years.

We'll also be welcoming back companies for whom we have become an artistic home, like Dorrance Dance and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, while presenting eight Pillow debuts and six international companies.

With over 500 events, talks, and performances on- and off-site in the works, we can’t wait to welcome you this summer!

Warmest regards,

Pamela Tatge Director

Melbourne-based Nicola Gunn combines dance and theater in a way that is “tantalizing, entertaining, ridiculous, and often bewildering in the best possible way” (Herald Sun). Her solo work Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, slips across tempos, ideas, and performance modes to tell a story about a man, a woman, a duck, and the complex realms of human behavior.

PARAMODERNITIES BY NETTA YERUSHALMY

Doris Duke Theatre

Highly acclaimed for her “fierce choreographic imagination” (The New York Times), Yerushalmy presents the world premiere of Paramodernities, which deconstructs iconic modernist choreographies and performs them alongside the scholarly contributions that help contextualize them. Intelligently crafted, the work highlights influential choreographers including Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, and Bob Fosse, through two different programs.

Faye Driscoll returns for the second consecutive summer with the newest installment of the trilogy Thank You For Coming. Play is a “captivating and complex” (Portland Mercury) collage of gesture, image, voice, and persona where

performers ventriloquize, shape-shift, and speak through and for each other.

“Performing with luscious spontaneity” (The New York Times), this vanguard of American modern dance brings to life the immediacy of classics by José Limón

alongside vibrant, new choreography by Kate Weare and others. Acclaimed for dramatic expression, technical mastery, and expansive yet nuanced movement,
