    Guru

If you feel earnestly the urgency for escaping from the cycle of birth and death, you will ignore any spiritual gloom prevailing in the land and seek out a guidinglight which will dispel the gloom for you. Such a guiding light is the Guru, yourspiritual master, Who is waiting to help you. Just as we nee d a doctor t o cure us ofour illness, a Guru is necessary to know what the Sastras prescribe and t o teach usthe particular course of action suite d to our qualifications. If you wish for a Guru inall earnestness, He will be before you in no time. But if you require His presenceonly to enable you to test His competence as a Guru, He will be farther off thanbefore. Surrender yourself ent irely to a Guru. He will take you by the hand and lead

you to t he goal. But you must have t rue f aith in Him. Have implicit faith in the wordsof your Guru and earnestly follow His instructions for the realisation of God andyou shall certainly see God.

Do not be disheartened by the spiritual darkness over-running the world. When theSun sets and the darkness of t he night envelops the land, we do not stop our worksaying that the Sun has set. Do we not light a lamp and get on with our normalactivities with t hat aid of that lamp? If we fee l that there is an urgency, do we notwalk miles and miles toget her during the darkest of nights guided by the flickeringlight of the torch? For the purpose of trade and money, we cross the vast oceansand explore the air, but for the purpose of Truth we make no ef fort. We want thete achers to come t o our door and solve our doubts for us. We have no time ordesire t o learn and practice our dharmas.

Religious teachers offer guidance based on the needs and the compete nce of thepeople who come to t hem. That is why a teacher gives diffe rent advise t o diffe rentseekers, just as a doctor prescribes diff erent medicines for diff erent patients. AGuru is bound to teach only those who do not know, but seek to know. If peopleprefer to remain in ignorance, the teachers are not t o blame at all for notatte mpting to te ach them.

True Gurus are available in every religion. They may not be in t he ordinary world ofstrife , for such a world does not want t hem nor have t hey any use for such a world. The y may sometimes be found even in the midst of strife, as strife cannot injurethe m. Doubts can never be solved unless you approach the pe rsons who have notmerely studied their religion but are daily living it. Go, the refore, in search of atrue master. He is always available and is only waiting for a sign of real earnestnessin you. If you have true humility and earnestne ss to see God, He will solve all yourdoubts and show you God in no time at all.
