THE JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR POLISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN THE WORLD

Dear Prospective Students,It is with great pleasure that I invite you to Krakow, where courses of Polish language and culture for foreigners have been organized for several decades by the Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland. Our center is one of the most important academic institutions for foreigners. Every year we offer a very rich program that includes semester and year-long courses, language courses for students of the Erasmus Program, short-term and summer courses, individual classes, long-distance learning, and preparatory courses for those interested in taking state certification exams in Polish as a foreign language. I would also like to warmly recommend our newest offer, a summer language camp for youth called “Explorers’ Summer,” as well as semester, year-long and summer courses aimed at preparing foreign students for studying in Poland.

Courses at the Center are led by specialists qualified in teaching Pol-ish as a foreign language. The core of the staff is comprised of research-ers in the Department of Polish as a Foreign Language. They regularly publish their works on Polish-teaching methodology, as well as textbooks and dictionaries. We aim to develop and promote modern and innovative educational methods. In the past we were pioneers of the communicative approach in teaching Polish to foreigners, and currently we are the first in Poland to offer a task-based method in which importance is placed not only upon communication, but also upon activity-based learning. Some of our staff members participated very actively in preparing Polish language state certification exams, and have taken part in administering the exams since they began in 2004. By the end of 2012, 3,999 foreign-ers from 70 different countries had passed these exams.

Learning Polish is always one of the most important goals of the foreigners studying at our Center. However, through the additional courses that are offered, they also have an opportunity to learn about Poland – its history, society, culture and literature. In the extra-curricular program there are even theater workshops in which foreigners prepare theatrical performances in Polish.

Although most of the students at the Center are foreigners, there are also about 80 Polish students here, specializing in teaching Polish as a foreign language and writing Master’s theses in this field. We also have about a dozen PhD students. The presence of Polish students at the Center gives foreigners who are studying here additional opportunities for direct contact with Polish people, allowing them to gain a deeper

understanding of Polish language and culture. Cultural events and field trips also help the two groups of students to integrate.

Another great virtue of studying with us is the city of Krakow itself – a magical city that is often referred to as the cultural capital of Poland. The Center is located in the very heart of the historic city, at the foot of Wawel Hill on which sits the royal Renaissance castle, a symbol of the Golden Age of Polish culture. Our Center is only a few hundred meters away from the Old Town Square, the largest medieval square in Europe, which bustles with life at all hours of the day.

Education at the Center is an interesting combination of the tradi-tions of the oldest Polish university, the knowledge and experience of the Center’s staff members, their passion and enthusiasm for creating modern, interesting and effective teaching methods, and foreign students’ eagerness to learn about and understand “Polishness.” It is a combina-tion which cannot be found anywhere else, and which creates a unique, unforgettable atmosphere. This is why it is worth coming here, studying here, and being here.

On behalf of all of the Center’s staff, once again I welcome you warmly to join us.

Dr hab. Piotr Horbatowski Director of the Center

POLISH LANGUAGE COURSES – PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION

The Center’s Polish language courses are structured in accor-dance with curricula accepted by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education for the purpose of certifying competence in Polish as a Second (Foreign) Language.

The Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World organizes:• one-year programs in Polish language and culture;• one-semester programs in Polish language and culture;• one-year preparatory programs for study in Poland;• one-semester preparatory programs for study in Poland.

It is possible to take part in a course lasting only one semester. Study can begin either October 1, 2013 or February 19, 2014. These courses end on February 6, 2014 or June 18, 2014, respectively.

According to the requirements of the Center, students who want to obtain a diploma must:• earn 30 credit points (ECTS*) each semester;• meet the requirements of particular courses;• pass all of the exams.

The credit system of the Center for the Polish Language and Culture in the Word of the Jagiellonian University has been approved by the highest University authorities. It has been based on several criteria. The first one is the level of students’ advancement, the second – thecourse difficulty as measured by the amount of students’ work and the third one – the course status, obligatory or facultative (as students’ language abilities grow, the number of obligatory classes is smaller).Number of hours hardly ever corresponds to the number of credits.

Note:• each semester is 15 weeks long;• according to the Polish system of education, one academic hour

equals forty-five minutes.

THE ONENESS INTERNET PROGRAM

For those beginning to learn the Polish language, we heartily recommend the ONENESS Internet program.

The Oneness program came about in 2006 in the framework of the SOCRATES LINGUA-L2 project. It is the fruit of cooperation between specialists from Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal. The coordinator is the Vilnius University. The authors of the Polish version of the project were Katarzyna Drwal--Straszak, Waldemar Martyniuk, Ph.D. and Przemysław Wacław Turek, Ph.D. from the Jagiellonian University’s Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World. The intention of the program’s creators was to create a multimedia pro-gram that would allow the Polish-language learner to attain a level of A1 competence. The language of explanation and commentary is English. The program is made up of ten lesson units (the Language School part), including: vocabulary, the basics of grammar, reading, listening, speaking and writing. The vocabulary parts, and those involving li-stening and speaking include recordings to help the learner become acquainted with the correct pronunciation of single words, as well as whole phrases and sentences. Each of the parts is supplied with exercises: true or false, multiple choice, matching, fill in the blanks etc. The Polish-English and English-Polish dictionary is of additional help – it features vocabulary used in the program. The words are provided in such a way as to allow the learner to find alternate forms of the same word (e.g.: miasto – mieście). In the Library section there is some brief information on grammar, some basic phrases, and general information on Polish-language phonetics. The Information Center part includes basic information on Poland, and web links to more information about our country. Entertainment Park, the most innovative part of the project, isa nine-part educational series which allows learners to trace the story of Kasia and her German friend, Thomas, and thus check their communication competence.

The program web site is at: www.oneness.vu.lt/pl
