Introduction

The Jaguar S-TYPE is an all-new, luxury sports sedan with a distinctive style, refined power, agilehandling, supple ride and luxurious comfort.

Powertrains are a V8 (AJ28) petrol engine, derived from the engines currently used in XJ and XK Seriesvehicles, with a new five-speed automatic transmission or alternatively, a V6 (AJ-V6) petrol enginecoupled with either a five-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission. The newV6 engine and transmission units and the updated variations to the V8 engine are described in the‘Jaguar S-TYPE Powertrain Introduction’ Technical Guide, which compliments this Guide. As with current vehicles, variable rate steering control is fitted and all vehicles have ABS brakes withtraction control as standard. A new, optional feature with the Jaguar S-TYPE is Dynamic Stability Control(DSC), yaw control, which assists the driver in maintaining directional control of the vehicle. Unlike current vehicles, the hood is hinged at its rear with a safety catch provided at the front of thehood. A tilt and slide sliding roof with a sunshade is an optional feature.

Both front seats have electrically operated 8-way adjustments as standard and memory equipment isavailable as an option. To allow a greater load to be carried in the luggage compartment, the rear seatscan be folded forwards and are split in a 60/40 configuration.

Automatic climate control, with dual temperature control for the driver and front passenger, is astandard feature on all vehicles. Another new item is reverse park control, a system giving the driveraudible warning of obstructions which could damage the vehicle during reversing.

A standard fit radio/cassette unit provides in-car entertainment with a CD autochanger also beingoffered. Other options include a phone, navigation system, vehicle emergency monitoring system andcertain voice activated systems. Optional cruise control and audio switches are fitted to the steeringwheel. All vehicles have a trip computer system and a message center.

Security features are immobiliser and alarm. Optional features include intruder sensor and inclinationsensor. The 3 or 4 button key-ring transmitter has radio frequency operation with an encrypted rollingcode to help prevent theft of the vehicle.Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) is the only computer system highway for all the vehicle electroniccontrols, CAN is not used.

The A, B/C upper and D/E post trim are structuralparts designed to absorb energy during occupanthead impact. These parts must be replacedfollowing accident damage if impacted. Damagemay not be evident unless the parts are removedand examined for damage such as cracking, stresswhitening or rib crushing. The headlining alsocontains energy absorbing elements which need tobe replaced in the event of accident damage. Theheadlining must be removed to inspect the foamparts and if any have come loose or beendamaged through cracking or crushing then thecomplete headlining must be replaced.

MirrorsThe standard fit manual dip mirror has a doubleball joint for adjustment. Electrochromic and rainsensing versions may be fitted. North Americanvehicles can also have an optional compass fitted

within the mirror head. The mirror mounting issupplied bonded to the windshield.

CarpetsThe interior carpet is a complete, one-piece design Trunk carpeting comprises • A folding floor panel.• Two styles of trunk LH carpet, one for

Navigation CD with 4 fixings and one withoutCD with 3 fixings. When the Navigation CDplayer is fitted it has a separate carpet trimcover.

• A RH side trim carpet with 3 fixings.• A single piece trunk lid liner with 11 fixings.

When a space saver wheel is stowed in the trunk,an under floor stowage tray is provided under thefolding floor carpet.

Anautomatic locking retractor (ALR) is incorporatedin the passenger belt reel assembly to providechild seat security.A compact type of pre-tensioner is fitted to thefront seatbelt reel assemblies. The reduced size isachieved by the use of rack and pinion gearing toretract the seatbelt reel when the unit is fired. The initiator is a conventional pyrotechnic devicewhich is electrically triggered from the RestraintsControl Module (RCM).Fault diagnosis of the pre-tensioner firing circuitsis carried out by the RCM and the presence of afault is indicated by the airbag warning lamp (seeDiagnostics). The pre-tensioner is an integral part of the seatbeltassembly and is not serviceable. Normal safetyprocedures applicable to the handling ofpyrotechnic devices must be followed.Note that plastic belt guides are fitted to the Bposts: if the pre-tensioners are fired, these guideswill fracture.

Rear SeatbeltsAll three rear seatbelts are of the inertia reel typewith child seat automatic locking retractors. The two outboard retractor assemblies aremounted on the rear quarter panels. The centreretractor is reverse wound and mounted in arecess on the rear parcel shelf.

Airbags

Driver AirbagThe driver airbag module is fitted in the centre ofthe steering wheel and is of conventional design.A reduced charge propellant (‘de-powered’) isused to minimise impact effects where the driveris seated close to the wheel. The module is secured by two side screws on theleft and right underside of the steering wheel.

Passenger Airbag

WARNING:Do not place objects on the passenger airbagdeployment panel. Injury could occur if theairbag contacts an object during inflation.

The passenger airbag uses a heated gas inflator(HGI) system instead of a solid propellant. Thissystem is inherently ‘clean’ since the inflation gasis a lean hydrogen/air mixture and the by-products are water vapour and air. Although thegas is not classified as an explosive, the possibleeffects of accidental deployment when handlingor working close to the unit are similar to those ofother types of airbag. It is recommended thatcurrent safety procedures are also followed whenhandling the HGI modules.

The HGI airbag module has fewer componentsthan previous types, consisting of:• 140 litre bag

• Aluminium pressure vessel containing amixture of 12% hydrogen/88% air at apressure of 180 bar.

• Pressure vessel end plug with burst disc.• Pyrotechnic igniter assembly fitted to

pressure vessel end plug. The igniter is electrically triggered from theRestraints Control Module (RCM). When triggered, the igniter fires a high speed ‘dart’ along thelength of the pressurised cylinder, producing aheated trail (due to friction) which causes rapidand even combustion of the gas throughout thecylinder. The igniter also ruptures the burst disc inthe end plug, allowing the expanding gases from

the pressure vessel to inflate the airbag. Theairbag is a top mounted assembly and deploys inan upwards direction, climbing the windshieldbefore folding downwards. After deployment, thebag deflates through two vents. The airbag deployment door is an integral part ofthe top fascia moulding. The airbag module isbolted to the underside of the fascia via a steeldeployment chute and is also bolted to twobrackets on the tubular cross car beam whichsupports the fascia assembly. Note: The module is not handed. To access theairbag module, the complete fascia assembly mustbe removed.

Side AirbagSide airbags are incorporated into the driver andfront passenger seat squabs and are similar tothose fitted to the XJ Series, using compressedargon to provide the inflation gas. The bag has acapacity of 19 litres and provides protection toboth the head and chest regions. The side airbag module is fixed to the outer seatframe and is located within a fabric deploymentpocket. The pocket is stitched to the seat coverseam and when the module is triggered, thislength of seam bursts to provide the deploymentexit for the airbag.

D.501.1474

If a damaged seat cover is to be replaced, the sideairbag module must be removed and re-located inthe deployment pocket of the new seat cover. The complete seat must be replaced if the airbaghas been deployed.

AIRBAG SYSTEM (LHD)

The Supplementary Restraints System (SRS)provides impact sensing, control of deploymentand fault diagnosis of the control module, airbags, pretensioners and associated circuits. Most ofthese functions are carried out by the RestraintsControl Module (RCM).

A front impact triggers the driver and passengerairbags and both pre-tensioners provided theimpact is above a set threshold as detected by thetwo longitudinal sensors in the RCM. When a side impact occurs, the lateral safingsensor in the RCM must also agree with an impact

Restraints Control Module (RCM)The RCM:• Houses the electro-mechanical safing sensor

and electronic discrimination sensor whichdetect a frontal impact.

• Houses the electronic safing sensor to detecta side impact.

• Identifies severity and direction of impactand makes decision on deployment of airbagsand pre-tensioners.

• Provides firing signals to all airbags and pre-tensioners.

• Performs on board testing of the airbag andpretensioner firing circuits, warning indicatorcircuits and module status (Side ImpactSensor performs its own internal checks).

• Stores fault codes in non-volatile memory.• Drives the airbag warning lamp on the

instrument pack: if the warning lamp isfaulty (fault code recorded) an audiblewarning tone is sounded.

• In the event of an impact, sends a signal tothe vehicle emergency message system(VEMS) and the PCM to indicate that a crashhas occurred.

• Is connected to the data link connector viathe SCP data bus to enable communicationwith an external PDU or scan tool.

• Provides temporary back-up power to operatethe airbags in the event of loss of batterysupply in an impact.

• In the event of an impact, records certaindata for subsequent access via the data linkconnector. This data includes decelerationinformation, firing delay and fault codes.

The RCM is bolted to the top of the driveshafttunnel below the center stack. Due to theimportance of the module being securely fixed tothe vehicle body, the ground connection is madevia the fixing bolts and is monitored by thediagnostic system. A bad connection causes a faultcode to be generated.Note: The torque settings are safety critical andthe figures given in the JTIS Service instructionsmust be adhered to.

SIDE IMPACT SENSORSide Impact SensorThe side impact sensors are mounted on bracketsattached to each inner sill. The side impact sensor contains an electronicdiscriminator sensor which detects side impactsabove a set threshold and signals a deploymentrequest to the RCM. Bag deployment only occursif the side safing sensor in the RCM has alsodetected an impact. The side impact sensor monitors its own internalstate, including correct ground connection, andsends a regular ‘heartbeat’ signal to the RCMindicating that it is functioning correctly and isavailable.A 2 wire cable is connected between the RCMand the side impact sensor. The cable has a dualfunction, supplying power to the side impactsensor and transmitting digital data to the RCM.

DiagnosticsThe restraints control module (RCM) performs allSRS diagnostics except those relating to the sideimpact sensor internal faults and grounding faults. When the ignition is switched on, the RCM carriesout a system ‘prove out’ over an 8 second periodduring which the airbag warning lamp on theinstrument pack is lit for the first 6 seconds.During the prove out period all circuits connectedto the RCM are tested and also the state of theRCM and side impact sensors (including groundresistance and supply voltage). If no faults are detected, the airbag warning lampremains off after the 8 second period. If a fault is detected the warning lamp flashes atwo digit code five times and then remains lit untilthe ignition is switched off. This is repeated oneach ignition cycle until the fault is cleared. Faultcodes are allocated a priority and if more thanone fault is stored in the RCM memory, thehighest priority fault is flashed. When this fault isrectified, the next priority fault is indicated. If the warning lamp itself is inoperative, the RCMstores a fault code but no other action occurs. If asystem fault occurs when the lamp is inoperative,a five ‘bleep’ audible warning is sounded fivetimes with 5 second intervals. The audiblewarning is repeated every 30 minutes and onsubsequent ignition cycles until the fault iscleared. If no faults are found during the system prove outperiod the RCM continues to test the SRS systemduring the remainder of the ignition cycle.

Fault diagnosis of the side impact sensor isnormally carried out using the portable diagnosticunit (PDU). Where the PDU is not available, theflashing code on the airbag warning lamp indicatesthe likely circuit or component fault.

JAGUAR S-TYPE Fuel System

38

Introduction

The fuel tank components, operation and layoutare new to Jaguar and have no commonality withprevious systems. The major features of the fueldelivery system are the use of a saddle type tankand a returnless fuel system. The evaporative lossmanagement system is similar in operation to thatfitted to the XJ and XK Series vehicles and on-board refuelling vapour recovery (ORVR) is astandard feature. For NAS markets only, leak testdiagnostics are performed.

Returnless Fuel SystemThe returnless fuel system delivers the correctamount of fuel to the engine under all conditionsand at a constant pressure differential withrespect to manifold pressure. This is without theneed for a return line to the tank or a fuel railpressure regulator. The use of a return line andthe pressure drop across a regulator contribute tovapour formation which can affect fuellingcalibration and requires a complex vapourmanagement system to meet legislativerequirements. Elimination of these components,

D.310.047

together with closed loop control of the variablespeed fuel pump, causes a reduction in the vapourgenerated, lower fuel temperatures and better fuelpressure control. Additional advantages include areduced load on the electrical system andimproved fuel economy.

Fuel TankThe fuel tank is of the ‘saddle’ type shape with LHand RH fuel compartments and is constructed ofhigh density polyethylene (HDPE), a plastic blowmoulded material. The tank is located below therear passenger seat with the drive shaft andexhaust running through the arch of the tank. Theunderside of the tank is protected by a fitted heatshield and the tank assembly is retained by twometal straps which are fixed to the underbody atthe front by removeable hinge pins and at the rearby bolts. Refuelling is via a separate filler pipe andconnecting hose to a stub pipe on the RH fuelcompartment.A fuel pump module is located in the RH

compartment and a transfer module in the LHcompartment with external cross-over pipes forfuel transfer between the compartments. Bothmodule assemblies have integral top plates forexternal pipework and electrical connectors. These are secured in the tank using screw onplastic closure rings. The closure rings areaccessible from inside the vehicle via two accessholes in the floor panel below the rear seat. Dueto the confined working space and the possibility

of fuel spillage within the vehicle, it is advisable toremove the tank completely before attempting toremove the internal assemblies.

Fuel FlowThe variable speed fuel pump is contained in afuel reservoir in the RH module assembly. Fuel ispumped from the reservoir through an externalcross-over pipe to the LH compartment where itflows via a T junction to the parallel pressurerelief valve and then out to the engine fuel rail. The reservoir is maintained by fuel supplied by jetpumps in the LH and RH compartments.Pressurised fuel from the variable speed pump isforced through the small jet nozzles (diameter0.5mm) creating a suction which draws fuel upfrom the tank. From the LH tank, this fuel ispumped through an external cross-over pipe andthen into the reservoir. In the RH tank, the jetpump is located in the base of the reservoir. The parallel pressure relief valve assemblycontains two spring loaded valves which operatein opposite directions, a fuel rail feed valve which

opens at approximately 2 psi during normaloperation and a second valve which opens atapproximately 45-70 psi to relieve excessive railpressure. The main functions of the valves are:• To help engine starting by retaining fuel in the

supply lines and rail.• To limit rail pressure due to temporary vapour

increase during hot soak conditions(temperature and thus pressure drop afterapproximately 20 minutes).

• To limit rail pressure caused by sudden loadchanges such as a full to closed throttletransition.

• To prevent siphoning from the tank in theevent of the fuel line being severed with thepump inactive.

Each side of the tank has an independently

INERTIA SWITCHoperating fuel level sender assembly mounted onthe respective module assembly.

Control and OperationThe speed of the fuel pump is varied under closedloop control so as to deliver the required fuel railinjection pressure in accordance with factors suchas driver demand, manifold pressure andtemperature changes. The control loop sensors, providing feedback information to the powertraincontrol module (PCM), are the engine fueltemperature (EFT) sensor and the injectionpressure (IP) sensor which are both mounteddirectly on the engine fuel rail (see S-TYPE Powertrain Technical Guide). The IP sensoralso has a vacuum feed from the intake manifoldso as to measure the pressure differential. The required fuel flow is determined by the PCMand sent to the rear electronic control module(RECM) which is the power driver for the fuelpump. The PCM demand to the RECM is a pulsewidth modulated (PWM) signal over a single lineat a frequency of approximately 256 Hz and aduty cycle of 0-50%. The RECM effecivelyamplifies this signal by increasing the frequencyby 64 and doubling the duty cycle, thus providingthe necessary high current drive for the fuelpump. The fuel pump relay, located in the rearpower distribution box, is energised by the PCMrelay and provides a dedicated fused supply to theRECM for the pump drive. When the ignition switch is turned from OFF toRUN or START, the PCM primes the system byrunning the pump for 1 second at full speed. Thepump is switched off 1 second after the engine isstopped. During hot starts, fuel pressure isincreased to prevent vapour lock. Fuel pump drive status is monitored by the RECMand communicated to the PCM via the SCPnetwork.Outputs from the fuel senders are connected byindependent wires to the RECM which sends thedata to the instrument pack and the PCM.

Inertia SwitchThe inertia switch is located behind the trim onthe left side of the vehicle, forward of the frontdoor post and below the fascia. A finger accesshole in the trim allows the switch to be reset.

42

Evaporative Emissions System

The function and operation of the on-boardrefueling vapor recovery (ORVR) evaporativeemissions system are similar to the system fittedto the XJ and XK Series vehicles in NAS marketsbut use different components. For the S-TYPE thesystem is fitted as standard for all markets.

Fuel Tank ComponentsTo meet ORVR evaporative emissionrequirements, the tank and associatedcomponents are designed to minimise vapourlosses. During re-fuelling, the narrowed fuel fillertube below the nozzle region provides a liquid

seal against the escape of vapour and a checkvalve in the tank inlet pipe opens to incoming fuelonly to prevent splashback. As the tank fills, vapour escapes through the open float level ventvalve, at the top of the tank, and passes throughthe adsorption canisters to atmosphere. When therising fuel level closes the float valve, the resultingback pressure causes refuelling cut-off. While thefloat valve is closed, any further rise in vapourpressure is relieved by the grade vent valve whichconnects to the canisters via the outlet of the floatvalve. At less than full tank level, the float valve isalways open, providing an unrestricted vapouroutlet to the canisters. If the tank is over filled (eg a fault in the deliverysystem) an integral pressure relief valve in the floatvalve assembly opens to provide a direct vent toatmosphere. The float level vent valve/pressure relief valveassembly and the grade valve are welded to thetank top and are non-serviceable. Note that bothvalve assemblies incorporate roll-over protection. The fuel filler cap uses a 1/8 turn action and istethered to the body. The filler cap assemblyincorporates both pressure relief and vacuumrelief valves (the latter is a new feature to Jaguar).

Introduction

D.309.080

The exhaust systems for the V6 and V8 enginesare similar, with minor tuning differences to allowfor the particular flow resistance requirementsand engine characteristics. The complete system isconstructed of 409 stainless steel and consists offive main components, the two downpipe catalystassemblies, the resonator and pipework assemblyand the two mufflers. Brushed stainless steel endpipes are fitted.

Downpipe AssemblyDifferent catalysts are fitted to the two engines:• the V8 engine has two 44in3 bricks in each

downpipe assembly, each with 470 cells persquare inch

• the V6 engine has two 44in3 bricks in eachdownpipe assembly, the front brick having350 cells and the rear brick 470 cells persquare inch.

Resonator AssemblyThe resonator assembly is common to bothengines.

Rear MufflersThe internal parts of the rear mufflers are differentbetween the two engines and are designed toproduce different quality sounds.

Support and CouplingsThe downpipe catalyst assemblies mate to theexhaust manifold via a two bolt self sealing flange. The resonator assembly connects to thedownpipes and rear mufflers by Torca clamps. The system is supported by two isolator rubbersbetween the resonator boxes and the rearsubframe and two isolators at the tailpipe end ofthe mufflers.

Introduction

The automatic and manual transmission units aredescribed in the ‘S-TYPE Sports Sedan PowertrainIntroduction’ Technical Guide.

J-GateThe J-gate assembly is mounted on thetransmission tunnel by four bolts and has asimilar operating mechanism to the XJ/XK Seriesvehicles. The selector gate positions are, P-R-N-Don one side of the ‘J’ and manual gear positions 4-3-2 on the other side. Movement of the gearselector lever up and down these positions istransmitted mechanically to a cable assemblywhich then rotates the digital range switch on theside of the automatic transmission housing (see ‘S-TYPE Powertrain Introduction’ TechnicalGuide). Movement across the gate between D and4 operates an electrical switch (without cablemovement). In the P position with the ignition off, the gearselector lever is locked by a solenoid plungerwhich inhibits a lock plate fixed to the selectormechanism. When the ignition is switched on,

pressing the brake pedal energises the solenoidand releases the lock plate, allowing the selectorlever to be moved from the P position. For NAS markets only, the J-gate slider actuator islinked to the ignition switch barrel to provide amechanical interlock. The interlock lever andcable are driven by the J-gate slider to operate alocking plunger in the ignition barrel. If the gearselector lever is in any position other than P, theignition key cannot be removed. Note whenservicing, that the interlock cable adjustment iscritical and the JTIS service instructions must befollowed. Where the interlock function is notfitted, the interlock lever is retained without theoperating cable.

Introduction

The Jaguar S-TYPE has an all-new suspension, designed with traditional Jaguar refinement butwith an added sporty feel for the driver. Bothfront and rear suspensions have double wishboneconstruction with the front having a high balljoint.Jaguar’s Computer Active Technology Suspension(CATS), is offered as an optional fit to furtherenhance the vehicle ride and handling quality. The suspension arrangement offers a standard set-up for most markets. The front and rear controlarms are set at angles to counteract dive whenbraking and squat when accelerating, giving astable platform under most conditions. It is vitally

important that before removing either of the frontcross members or the rear axle cross members, the vehicle body and the component beingremoved are marked to ensure correctrealignment during assembly. The Jaguar S-TYPEbody-in-white fixings have a greater clearancethan previous Jaguar cars so require this extraspecial care with alignment on re-assembly.Vibration and ride and handling concerns mayarise if alignment is not maintained.

Front Suspension

The independent front wheel suspension is adouble wishbone axle arrangement withaluminium control arms. The two arms are ofdifferent lengths, which minimises the changes intrack and camber. Inclination of the upper controlarm axis provides anti-dive front suspensionaction. There are two front cross members, known as Number 1 and Number 2. Number 1, the forward cross member, is a steelfabrication, non-isolated, which locates the lowercontrol arm front mounting, the anti-roll bar andthe cooling module. The rear cross member, Number 2, is analuminium casting, non-isolated and it locates thelower control arm rear mounting, the powersteering rack and the engine hydro-mounts.

WARNING: No attempt must be made toweld or repair the aluminium crossmember. If it is damaged, a new one mustbe installed.

Lower Control ArmThe lower control arm is an aluminium forgingand has locations for the damper and the anti-rollbar drop link. It is mounted with one hydro-bush,the front lower bush, and one rubber bush, bothserviceable. This is the first time that a hydraulicbush has been fitted to a Jaguar wishbone. Rear Suspension

The rear suspension is a double wishbonearrangement with aluminium control arms. Therear crossbeam is steel fabricated and isolated tothe body with four bushes. The crossbeam locatesthe upper and lower control arms and the anti-roll bar.

Control arms are aluminium castings and heavilyinclined in plan view. The lower control armlocates the damper and anti-roll bar drop link. The damper fixing is tapped into the aluminiumcasting. The upper control arm has one cross axis bushand one rubber bush. It contains an integralballjoint.

The rear knuckle is an aluminium casting and hasa press fit cartridge bearing.

The independent rear suspension upper andlower front bushes are conventional rubberbonded bushes. The upper and lower rear bushescontain no rubber and are essentially pressed in‘rose’ bearings for superior suspension geometrycontrol. These are common components betweenall vehicle variants and are a similar concept to

Wheel Alignment Camber caster and toe are adjustable on the frontsuspension only. Toe is the only adjustment on therear suspension. Camber and caster are adjustedby means of eccentric cams on the lower controlarm mounting bolts. The front toe is adjusted byuse of the front tie rod. The rear toe is adjusted bythe use of toe link assemblies connecting theknuckles to the rear sub-frame.

Anti-roll BarsThere are two types of front anti-roll bars, one forall V6 and base V8 engined vehicles and one forV8 sport. There are two types of rear anti-rollbars, one for all V6 and base V8 engined vehiclesand one for V8 sport. All anti-roll bars are similar to current saloonexcept that the front bushes have moulded insertfor tuning.

Springs and DampersThere are numerous variants to suit both‘standard’ and ‘sport’ derivatives of the V6 and V8engined vehicles. Both front and rear springs anddampers are similar to current sports vehicles. With a strut type assembly, integrated top mountand two-position lower spring pan. The front andrear co-axial strut and spring assemblies areinstalled between the lower control arms and thevehicle body.Sports dampers are CATS only, as XK series. The CATS suspension is similar to the systemintroduced on the XK8. It is a two-stage adaptivedamping ride control. The control module islocated in the rear left-hand corner of the sparewheel well. Three accelerometers are fitted. Thefront vertical and lateral accelerometers aremounted as an assembly to the vapourmanagement valve bracket. The lateralD.204.401

Suspension AlignmentA special tool has been designed to enable correctalignment of the suspension to the body. Connected to a personal computer, a transducerwith a wire measuring device is fitted to a plateattached to the Number 2 cross member.Alignment pins are fitted to the body front andrear to the left-hand side chassis rail and to therear suspension beam. Measurements are takenfrom one point on the Number 2 beam. Then thetransducer is transferred to the other point on thebeam and a second set of measurements taken. The PC then calculates if there is anymisalignment and by how much, and displays theinformation on the screen. The beam(s) are thenadjusted to bring the alignment back within limitsand a further series of measurements are taken. This process is repeated until the alignment iscorrect and the beams are then tightened. Aprint-out of the measurements is to be attached tothe job card as a permanent record of alignment.Note that camber, caster and toe may be requiredif any of the beams have been adjusted.

Driveline

IntroductionThe driveline is a standard type with the engineposition at the front and driven rear axle. This willbe the first time that Jaguar has used in-plantdriveline balancing to improve noise, vibrationand handling. The driveline is finely balanced atthe rear driveshaft joint. The centre bearing islaser aligned during initial factory build.

The alloy rear engine mountings have twovariants, one for automatic transmission and onefor manual transmission. They are bothserviceable items. The V6 auto is the same as theV8 but rotated in plan by 180 degrees. The rubbermountings are carry over concept from thecurrent XJ and XK Series vehicles but are not

D.307.322

DRIVELINE ARRANGEMENT

interchangeable with them. Both automatictransmission rubber mountings are common butwith a softer unique mount for the manual V6transmission.In service if they are replaced, ensure that thereare buffer gaps and that they are approximatelyequal. Neither will be contaminated by lubricantor automatic transmission fluid.

DriveshaftThe S-TYPE has a two-piece welded steel tubedriveshaft with a splined centre slip joint andlocking collar, the whole being aligned with thebody centreline. The driveshaft has rubber flexcouplings and a rubber, body-mounted, centrebearing. For safety, the front tube is collapsible.

Page 59: Jaguar S-TYPE Sports Sedan Introduction -

JAGUAR S-TYPE Chassis

54

The centre joint is a conventional hookes jointwith staked lugs and the rubber flex couplingshave spigoted sleeves to the transmission and rearaxle final drive unit (three bolt fixings)All driveshafts are balanced. If undercoating thevehicle, protect the driveshaft, universal jointsand the axleshafts to prevent overspray of theundercoating material.

Driveshaft weight is:• V6 auto 12.7 kg• V8 auto 13.4 kg • V6 manual 14.1 kg

Serviceable parts are the centre bearing, flexcoupling, rubber boot, alignment bearing andfasteners. Lubrication of the driveshaftcomponents is unnecessary. The universal joint isequipped with nylon thrust washers, located atthe base of the bearing cup. Balancing of the driveshaft is achieved using aPDU with the new vibration analyser. This givesdetails of where the shaft is out of balance and byhow much and where to place the balance nuts.

Final Drive (differential)

The final drive, differential, has a steel case andrear cover, no drain plug and has a sealed for lifelubricant. Differential weight is 27 kilograms andoil capacity 1.5 litres of synthetic oil (M2C192A).The hypoid gearset is mounted in taper rollerbearings. It has a two point differential assemblyretained by bearing straps. The central pinion ison the body centreline. Pinion and output oilseals, the companion flange and nut and theneedle roller output bearing are the onlyserviceable items. Final drive ratios are:

3.31:1 (V6 and V8 auto)2.87:1 (V6 manual)

Differential MountingsThe crossbeam forms the mounting points for thethree differential mounting bushes. All threebushes are conventional rubber bushes, commonto all S-TYPE vehicles and are serviceable items. They control the driveline and isolate differentialnoise and vibration. Avoid disturbing the subframemounts when servicing differential bushes. Thefront differential bush is a two-part bush and theRH and LH rear bushes are handed and colourcoded to differentiate them

Half-shaftsHalf-shafts are unequal lengths and are thereforehanded, left and right. Constant velocity joints arefitted to both ends, the outer is fixed and theinner is sliding. They are sealed for life andretained in the differential side gear with a springclip. Weights are approximately V6 size - 100 8.89kg (LH) 8.76kg (RH)V8 size - 104 9.43kg (LH) 9.3kg (RH)

Serviceable parts are:• the pinion and output oil seals• companion flange and nut• output bearing (needle roller)

Note: It is possible that the replacement or repairof gears, bearings or shafts may be introduced at alater date.

Brakes

Brake Control ModuleBrakes are controlled with a Teeves Mk 20E brakemodulator. The anti-lock brake/traction control, controlmodule (ABS/TCCM) contains the integral softwarefor ABS and traction control, similar to current XJand XK Series vehicles. It is supplied as a 10 valve,4-channel module and calibration is the same toall powertrains. It is connected to the SCP bus fortraction control, warnings and vehicle speed.

Dynamic Stability ControlDynamic stability control (DSC) is a new Jaguarsafety feature, which uses ABS and tractioncontrol to control yaw movements of the vehicle.Yaw is the rotary motion of the vehicle on itsvertical axis, a force that would cause oversteer oroversteer or sideslip. The dynamic stabilitycontrol module (DSCM) contains the samesoftware as described but with the addition of IVDsoftware. The modulator is supplied as a 12 valve,4-channel module calibrated for base suspensiononly. The connectors differ between the two; the10 valve unit has a 25-way with sliding cam, as

current vehicles and the 12 valve unit has a 47-way connector with lever cam. DSC calculates thereal vehicle motion (forward and gearing) andcompares it to the direction initially chosen by thedriver. A steering rate sensor is located on thesteering column and is used to calculate steeringangle. A yaw rate sensor and lateral accelerometerare located on a bracket behind the hand brakelever and are used to calculate the vehicle underor over steer and any side slip. As soon as DSC recognises that the driver is notreacting sufficiently to compensate a deviation,DSC intervenes by applying brake force to each ofthe four wheels individually to control yaw

Front Wheel SensorThe front wheel active ABS speed sensors areincorporated into the wheel bearings, connectedvia a flying lead routed along the brake hose.

Rear Wheel SensorThe rear sensors are mounted on the hub carrierand connected by a flying lead routed along thecontrol arm. None of the sensors are adjustable.Wheel speed sensors are new active sensors, which are more sensitive at lower speeds that thecurrent saloon and sports wheel speed sensors.

Front and Rear CallipersFront callipers are twin piston aluminiumconstruction. The ventilated disc sizes are 300 mmx 32 mm. The rear brakes have cast iron callipers. This is because of the hand brake operation usingthe rear callipers. The ventilated disc sizes are 288mm x 20 mm. Each rear calliper has a ball andramp park brake mechanism, operating on themain calliper pads.

BRAKE BOOSTERBrake BoosterThe brake booster is a Lucas unit mounted on theengine bay bulkhead with a 25.4mm diametermaster cylinder and integral brake fluid reservoir.NOTE: The reservoir is also a combinedbrake/clutch reservoir for manual transmissionvehicles.Twin vacuum boosters of 8 inch and 9 inch sizesare fitted. The DSC booster is different having integralpressure transducers and solenoids with aircontrol valves for the booster. The transducers arelocated on the brake master cylinder and are usedfor pressure feedback, brake application and failsafe operation. The booster is used to supplybrake pressure without driver input.ABS operation is no different to current Jaguarvehicles.

Parking BrakeThe parking brake lever is mounted on the RHside of the centre console for all models, withconventional button operation as current XJsedan. It is a self-adjusting system operating onthe rear brake callipers. All models have a leathergrip.

Power Assisted Steering

IntroductionThe Jaguar S-TYPE has a variable assist rack andpinion steering gear and variable rack ratio. Thevariable steering rack ratio reduces the number ofturns from lock to lock (2.8) to enhance parkingmanoeuvrability whilst maintaining the on-centresteering precision required at high speed. Fullpower assistance is provided for parking. Steeringassistance decreases smoothly at a calibrated rateto raise driver steering efforts as vehicle speedincreases.

ServicingThere are no carry over parts from XK or XJ Seriesvehicles. The rack is mounted to the rear of cross memberNumber 2. The PAS pump is belt driven. A PAScooler matrix is located within the radiatorpackage. Low PAS pump speeds problems are prevented byincreasing engine speed. A power steeringpressure (PSP) switch senses the demand on thepump at low engine speeds and increases thespeed to a pre-set minimum.Hose connections to the pump and the steeringgear are quickfit connectors. The quick connecttube must be pushed into the existing tube nutport, along the centreline. The assembly iscomplete when the tube end bottoms out in theport with an audible click/snap. Correct assemblyshould be verified by pulling the quickfit tube end.Servicing of the PAS line involves removal of thequickfit nut. Replacement PAS lines are suppliedcomplete with quickfit nut and sealing washer. Ifthe joint is disturbed it is compulsory to replacethe PTFE sealing ring otherwise leaks areinevitable. Replacement sealing washers may beinstalled with the use of Service tool D90P-3517-A.Care must be taken when removing the quickfitnut from the V6 engine pump as the pulley isPHENOLIC and is susceptible to damage. The V8pump installation provides a short jumper tubefrom the pump to improve accessibility to thehigh-pressure hose connection. The PAS pulley

FRONT STEERING ARMrequires a Service tool to assist removal. Low-pressure hose connections are made usingConstant Tension (CT) clamps. Pinion hydraulicconnections are orientated with the bottomconnector low pressure with the longer nut, ascurrent vehicles. The PAS fluid is for PAS only; it is not to be usedfor transmissions. After manual filling, the systemmust be bled using a vacuum pump to remove allthe air from the system to prevent system noises.Fluid level is checked through a sight window onthe reservoir.Components replaceable are complete pump, steering rack, reservoir or hose assembly.A non-serviceable 10-micron filter is locatedwithin the reservoir to maintain fluid cleanlinessthroughout the life of the vehicle. It is essential aswith all Jaguars that the system does not becomecontaminated. Cap all ports on disassembly toprevent contamination ingress. As with currentvehicles, the fluid and reservoir must be renewedif any major component is replaced i.e. Rack, pump or cooler. The road wheels should be set straight ahead andthe steering wheel locked (using service toolF7LC-3F732-BF) when removal and assembly ofthe steering gear or intermediate shaft is required. This is necessary to prevent damage to the air bagclock spring within the steering upper columnassembly. The intermediate shaft can only beassembled to its mating components in onelocation. Steering wheel alignment can only beachieved by adjustment at the tie-rods. Adimensional check of the steering rack positionmay be necessary to verify rack centre.

Steering Column

The steering column assembly is completely new

and uses no parts from previous Jaguar

assemblies:• Construction of the upper column assembly is

based on the use of aluminium extrusions andcastings.

• A two shaft lower column assembly is used.• The electronically controlled steering lock, the

steering column lock module (SCLM), is aphysically separate component from theignition switch which is fascia mounted.

• The dynamic stability control (DSC) steeringwheel position sensor is fitted to the uppercolumn assembly.

Steering WheelThe steering wheel consists of a magnesiumarmature with a central steel insert. The steeringcolumn and wheel insert are splined with a flat sothat the wheel can only be fitted in one position.Any misalignment of the steering wheel iscorrected by adjusting the tie rods. The splinedfitting also has a locking taper which requires theuse of a 2 legged puller to remove the wheel. The steering wheel incorporates the the airbagmodule, horn mechanism and the optional cruisecontrol and audio/phone switches.

ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLUMN

Adjustable Column Assembly The electrically powered upper steering columnassembly provides adjustment for 16˚ of steeringwheel tilt and 50mm of reach (telescopingmovement) and also features automatic wheel tilton entry and exit. A combined joystick and on/offswitch on the side of the column shroud controlsthe the tilt and reach movements (see page 106).Where fitted, the two position memory systemstores settings for steering wheel tilt and reachtogether with seat and mirror positions. The upper column assembly comprises thefollowing :• The fixed sub-assembly forms a supporting

outer enclosure for the column and consistsof two aluminium extrusions and a steel stiffening plate bolted together with the lowerextrusion bolted to a lower casting. Thesteering column runs in a bearing in thelower casting which also carries the tilt andreach drive motors. The complete columnassembly is fixed to the car cross beam viafour bolts to the lower extrusion.

• The moving section consists of an aluminiuminner housing running on top and bottom ballbearings within the fixed enclosure andsupporting the tilt head casting. Thetelescoping upper section of the steeringcolumn passes through this inner housing andconnects to the steering wheel shaft via auniversal joint located in the tilt head casting.

• The tilt and reach motors have integralgearboxes which directly drive screwactuators via flexible shafts.

• The tilt and reach position measuringpotentiometers, for the driver memorisedpositions, are combined in a singlecomponent with linear sliders which aredirectly driven by the moving actuators.

• Connection to the lower steering columnassembly is via a rag joint (rubber ‘do-nut’type coupling).

• The dynamic stability control (DSC) sensorring is located on the column with the sensorunit fixed to the drive motors (see section onDSC).

STEERING COLUMN LOCK MODULE

Steering Column Lock (where fitted)

Lock OperationThe steering column lock module (SCLM) andignition key switch are separate assemblies andactivation of the lock is remotely controlled by theinstrument pack, GECM and RECM. The column isunlocked on insertion of the ignition key and islocked when the key is withdrawn. The SCLM is mounted on top of the lower casting,on the upper column assembly, by two shearbolts. A locking bolt projects down from the SCLMthrough a hole in the lower casting to engage intoa splined collar on the steering column. The SCLMis an integrated non-serviceable assembly, housing

a motor and worm drive for the locking bolt andalso an electronic printed circuit board. Whenactivated, the locking bolt is driven positively inboth the lock (down) and unlock (up) directionsand has a spring to help locate it into the troughof the splined collar. When disengaging, thelocking bolt is driven upwards until it operates amicroswitch (within the SCLM) which causes themotor to stop and also signals via the SCP bus thatthe steering lock is off. To engage the lock, themotor is energised for 350ms to lower the bolt.

System ControlThe lock motor is powered by a switched 12V linefrom the RECM and switched ground line from theGECM, with both supplies being applied onlyduring lock operation. Initiation of motor driveand direction and power supply switching iscontrolled by the instrument pack via the SCP buswhen ignition key insertion or withdrawal isdetected. Identification is checked between theSCLM and the other modules and the system willnot operate if, for example, a module has beenreplaced and not re-programmed. Systemdiagnostics include defective modules andincorrect module identification and also certainSCLM faults, ie unconfimed lock or unlockconditions and failed microswitch.

Steering Column ShroudsThe upper part of the column assembly isenclosed by two plastic shrouds, upper and lower. The steering column adjust switch, controlling tiltand reach for the electrically powered steeringcolumn assembly, is mounted on the side of thelower shroud.

System Overview

The climate control system provides filtered air tothe cabin from a fully automatic, dual zone, temperature controlled system. Driver and frontpassenger have independent control of thetemperature of the air for their individualcomfort. The system regulates the volume ofairflow from the vents of the instrument panel, rear seat panel, front and rear floor ducts, frontscreen defroster and side windows. It willautomatically select between fresh andrecirculated air to assist rapid cooling of theinterior.Operation of the heated front screen or heatedwiper park area and rear window heater iscontrolled from the climate control panel. Doormirror heaters are automatically switched onwhen the heated rear window is switched on. Aswith current vehicles, the outside air temperaturecan be displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. The system can be switched ON by pressing anybutton, except OFF.When ‘AUTO’ is selected, the driver’s and frontpassenger’s air temperature, fan speed and airdistribution are automatically controlled to give

Heater/Evaporator and BlowerA single blower, heater and evaporator are fittedto the passenger side of the vehicle behind thefascia. Air intake is from the passenger side vialeaf screen slots (see page 16). A particle filter ismounted forward of the bulkhead in a rain/watercollector box. Mounting of the heater/evaporatorunit and blower assembly is by three bulkheadfixings and one locator pin.Condensate drainage is integral with theheater/evaporator unit and therefore has noseparate drain tubes. The heater matrix is a dualheater unit with three heater pipes, two inlets of16mm diameter and one outlet of 19mmdiameter.

D.412.217

Underbonnet ComponentsBoth V6 and V8 engine configurations include awater valve controlled heating (dual) system andthe valve is mounted behind the right-hand sideheadlamp. The V8 engine system, as with currentcars, has a water pump to supplement idle waterflow through the heater and this is mounted onthe right-hand side of the cooling pack. The pumpis held in a mounting rubber, which is pushedover two pillars on the rear of the fan shroud andheld with two screws.

CondenserThe black-painted aluminium condenser is locatedto the front of the combi-cooler and mounts to itsend tanks. The condenser end tubes push into twogrommets, which are in turn held in two steelbrackets, screwed to the radiator end tanks. Thebottom of the condenser is screwed directly intothe radiator tanks. A radiator cooling duct clipsonto the condenser end tanks and also pushesonto the lower radiator channel. The duct ensuresthat all available airflow is directed through thecooling module.

Air DistributionAir distribution is automatically controlled when‘AUTO’ is selected. Manual control can beachieved using the air distribution buttons.

Heat at Rest Feature (V8 engine vehiclesonly)Interior heating may be continued after theengine has been switched off by turning theignition to position ‘II’. The climate control systemwill continue to provide heat to the vehicleinterior until the engine cools down. Excessive usewill cause a low battery voltage, which mayprevent the vehicle from being started.

Voice Activated ControlSome functions of the climate control system canbe operated with the Voice Activation System(when fitted). A full operating description is given in the VoiceActivation Handbook included with the vehicleliterature pack.

Serial Data Link

The multiplexed electrical architecture is used forthe exchange of information between controlmodules, the instrument pack and the data linkconnector.

Multiplexing allows more than one piece ofinformation to be carried along a wire. In thisway, the electronic control modules cancommunicate with each other quickly and shareinformation. With multiplexing, just twointertwined wires carry information to any controlmodule on the network. On the SCP systemhundreds of messages a second can betransmitted; the maximum waiting time is only afew hundred milliseconds. An additional benefit isthat the modules ‘sleep’ when not in use, reducing battery drain.

Principles of OperationThe vehicle has two module communicationnetworks. The first is the Standard CorporateProtocol (SCP - J1850 SAE standard)), which is anunshielded twisted pair cable: data bus plus anddata bus minus. The second is the InternationalStandard Organization (ISO) 9141 communicationnetwork, which is a single wire network. Bothnetworks can be connected to the PDU tester byone connector: the data link connector. The datalink connector is located under the instrumentpanel, between the steering column and the audiounit.

The ISO 9141 communications network does notpermit inter-module communications. When thePDU tester communicates to modules on the ISO9141 communication network , the PDU must askfor all information; the modules initiatecommunications.

The SCP communication network will remainoperational even with severing of one of the buswires. Communications will also continue if oneof the bus wires is shorted to ground or batterypositive voltage (B+), or if some , but not all, termination resistors are lost.

Unlike the SCP communication network, theISO 9141 communication network will notfunction if the wire is shorted to ground or batterypositive voltage (B+). Also, if one of the moduleson the ISO 9141 network loses power or shortsinternally, communication to that module will fail.

Control Modules

The vehicle control module functions aredescribed briefly below (for further informationrefer to the relevant sections throughout theGuide).

Anti Lock Brake/Traction Control andDynamic Stability Control, Control ModulesThe anti-lock brake control module is connectedto the SCP communication network. The modulecomes in two forms. The first type is the standardequipped anti-lock brake system (ABS) withtraction control (TC). It controls the brakepressure to the four wheels to keep the vehicleunder control while braking. The second type of ABS is optional and is calleddynamic stability control (DSC). This controlmodule adds yaw sensors to the package to helpin sensing a loss of vehicle control.

Audio Control UnitThe audio control unit is connected to the SCPcommunication network and also to the audiocontrol protocol (ACP) communication network. The audio control unit communicates with thecompact disc and the cellular phone transceiver.

Driver Door Control Module (DDCM)DDCM is connected to the SCP communicationnetwork. The module controls many functionsincluding power windows, driver mirror, powerlocks, and keyless remote entry.

Driver Seat Control Module (DSCM)The DSCM is connected to the SCPcommunication network. The DSCM is locatedunder the driver seat and controls the seatpositions. The module also communicates with theDDCM to control the driver seat memoryfunctions.

Security and Locking Systems

IntroductionThe following security and locking features areavailable but vary by market or options:

• Key barrel on driver’s side only• Encrypted engine immobilization by ignition

key transponder• Radio frequency remote fob• Central locking by key and remote fob• Double locking (not in North America, Japan,

Taiwan)• Drive away door locking• Mechanical child locks on rear doors• Perimeter alarm of doors, bonnet, trunk• Intrusion sensing, ultrasonically sensed (not

in North America, Japan, Taiwan)• Inclination (tilt) sensing (Dealer fit accessory)• Panic alarm, fob operated (certain markets)• Trunk lock isolate (valet lockout, see page

107) - North America only• Electro/mechanical steering column lock

The following convenience features are includedeither as standard or optional features:

• Remote fob operated driver’s seat, doormirrors and steering column memory recall(two memories)

• Remote fob operated trunk lid release• Key operated global close (sliding roof and all

windows)• Key and fob remote-operated global open

(sliding roof and all windows)• Trunk lid and fuel flap interior release buttons• Trunk release button in trunk plinth• Emergency key lock barrel under trunk plinth.

System DescriptionThe security system is controlled by a driver doorcontrol module (DDCM). When activatedunauthorized entry in to the vehicle is detected bythe courtesy lamp switches. When the alarm istriggered, the system flashes the turn signal lampsand sounds the alarm system horns.

The passive anti-theft system (PATS) is a feature toprevent the vehicle being driven away by anunauthorized person. The PATS system consists ofelectronically coded keys, a transceiver and iscontrolled by the Instrument Pack. When theignition is switched to position ‘II’, the transceiverenergises the ignition key to read its electronic

code that is transmitted back. If the read codeequals a stored code in the control module, thesteering column is unlocked and the powertraincontrol module (PCM) will let the engine start.Otherwise, starting of the engine is disabled(through the starter disable relay and the PCM).

The security indicator LED provides the driverwith the status of the PATS or security system. Ifthe security system is armed the light will flashwhen the ignition is switched OFF. The PATS lightwill illuminate when the key is inserted into theignition lock and turned to position ‘II’. It will stayilluminated until the system has carried out its teston the key. If the system detects a fault, it willflash the LED for 1 minute, and then flash out thecorresponding 2 digit fault code.

Door locks and handlesOnly the driver’s door has a key lock. All doors and the luggage compartment can belocked and unlocked using a key-ring transmitter.

KeysTwo black-headed keys (and one green-headedkey in the North American market) are suppliedwith the vehicle. The key number is recorded on aplastic tag which is attached to each key. Each black-headed key will operate the ignitionswitch and lock the doors, luggage compartmentand the glove box. The green-headed key is a valet

key which will not unlock a locked glove box orlocked trunk lid. The interior and exterior trunkswitches will not unlock the trunk lid when thevalet switch has been set.An electronic device is fitted in the head of eachkey which is programmed to the vehicleelectronics. When the key is placed in the ignitionswitch the vehicle electronics recognize thecorrect key and allow engine start. The enginecannot be started with a key not programmed tothe vehicle electronic systems.Up to eight keys can be used provided the Dealerprograms them all to the vehicle.

Key-ring transmittersThe security system is controlled remotely by aradio frequency, battery-operated transmitter. The transmitter is activated by pointing it towardsthe vehicle and pressing one of the operatingbuttons. Key-ring transmitters will not operate if a key is inthe ignition switch. Two transmitters are supplied with the vehicle, butup to four can be used provided they are allprogrammed to the vehicle by the Dealer.

Ignition SwitchThe fascia-mounted ignition switch, on the right-hand side of the steering column, has four keypositions:0 Ignition OFF, and the only position in which

the key can be inserted or removed. Whenthe key is removed the steering lock isengaged.

I Auxiliary position: this position allows use ofsome electrical circuits, for example, windowoperation. The airbag system is activated when theswitch is turned to position ‘I’.

II Ignition ON: all electrical circuits except thestarter motor are activated. The key remainsin this position when driving.

III Start position: the starter motor is operatedfor as long as the key is held in this position, against spring pressure.

Smart LockingThis feature helps prevent locking the key in thevehicle. If the driver’s door is open and an attempt ismade to lock the doors using the driver’s doorinterior locking lever, all doors will lock and thedriver’s door only, will then become unlocked. If the front passenger door locking lever is used tolock the doors then all doors will become lockedand then unlocked. The vehicle can then belocked using the key in the driver’s door lock or akey-ring transmitter.

Alarms and Audible Signals

Note: In certain markets, legislation prohibits theuse of audible confirmation signals. In such cases, the sound source has been removed from thesystem.

Audible SignalsAn audible signal will sound when a door isopened using a key if the vehicle has been armed(Europe only). This mode can be cancelled within15 seconds of opening the door, by disarming thesecurity system using the key-ring transmitter orby switching the ignition to position ‘II’.

Error SignalThe direction indicators will flash five timeswhenever one of the following conditions ispresent:• If any door is open when an attempt to ‘arm’

the security system is made.• The luggage compartment or the bonnet is

not properly closed when an attempt to ‘arm’the security system is made.

• If there is an electrical failure within theintrusion sensing system, if fitted, and anattempt to ‘disarm’ the security system ismade.

Full AlarmOnce armed, any of the following circumstanceswill create a full alarm state and sound the hornsand flash the direction indicators:• Opening a door, luggage compartment lid

(except with transmitter) or bonnet.• Movement in the passenger area (if intrusion

sensors are fitted).• Using a key in the ignition switch which is not

programmed to the vehicle.• If the driver’s door is opened with a key

(European markets only) after a 15 seconddelay.

• If the inclination sensor (if fitted) is activated.

Intrusion Sensing (when fitted)A further enhancement to the security system isthe addition of intrusion sensing. When thevehicle is armed and double-locked, movementwithin the vehicle interior will activate the alarm. When the security system is disarmed theintrusion sensors are also disarmed.

Panic Alarm (when fitted)When in or near the vehicle, the alarm can be setoff to deter a possible offender. For this feature tooperate, the key must not be in the ignitionswitch.Pressing the panic button on the key-ringtransmitter will activate the ‘Panic Alarm’.The Panic Alarm will sound for the normal fullalarm period. assembly is designed as an integral unit of thecenter stack. The Navigation Control Unit/CD MapLoader is mounted in the rear LH side of the trunkand covered by a dedicated styled trim panel (seeillustration on page 123). The GPS antenna islocated above the rear parcel shelf but hiddenunderneath the interior trim.Digital map information is held on a compact disk(CD) which is loaded into the Navigation ControlUnit housed in the trunk. The LCD provides full information for operatingthe system by means of menus, text prompts andmap displays. Screen selections are made by thecontrols on the front panel.

How the System WorksThe system uses signals from the GlobalPositioning system (GPS) satellites, which enablesthe Navigation ECU to calculate, with the aid ofCD ROM map data, ABS sensors’ signals and Gyrosensor’s signals, the exact position of the vehicleto within meters. After entering the desireddestination, the driver is guided along by bothvoice and visual instructions. If the driver straysoff the route, the system calculates a new routeshowing the easiest way back to the originaldestination.

Voice GuidanceA chime and an audible instruction will be heardjust before the vehicle reaches the next junctionalong the route where a turn has to be made.

Screen GuidanceThe screen shows the map display with thecurrent vehicle position and route highlighted.Just before each turn, the screen automaticallyshows the next junction diagram (with turninformation) overlayed on the map display. Afterthe junction, the screen returns to full mapdisplay.

InterfacesThe system also provides interfaces such as a TV(Japan only), Vehicle Emergency message systemknown as Jaguar ASSIST (North America only) andReal Time Traffic Information (limited to certainmarkets).

TV (Japan only)The TV is a Dealer fit item and is displayed on theNavigation screen. The sound is generated throughthe vehicle’s audio system in mono only. TV

Jaguar Assist (North America only)Assist is an integrated vehicle emergency messagesystem (VEMS) that uses the Jaguar securityresponse center for emergency roadsideassistance via the Jaguar in-car telephoneinstallation. The global positioning system (GPS) isused to identify the position, direction of traveland speed of the vehicle. Access to the Assistfeature is through the use of the Navigationsystem. The emergency assistance feature allowsrapid access to the emergency services (police, fire or ambulance) and roadside assistance. Onceassistance has been requested and the vehiclelocation confirmed, the appropriate services arecontacted for assistance to be dispatched. In theunfortunate event of an airbag deployment, thesystem will automatically place an emergency call.

Access to the system is gained by pressing theinformation button on the Navigation front panelscreen (the ignition must be in position ‘I’ or ‘II’).While in use, a sequence of messages is displayedon the LCD.

Note: If an Assist call is initiated and the operatorcannot establish voice communication, policeassistance will be dispatched to the vehicle.

The system can be used wherever a cellularphone service is available. The Jaguar phone mustbe connected to the vehicle, working correctlyand registered with a cellular network. A roamingairtime agreement is required so that the systemcan be used in all areas.

Diagnostic LightA diagnostic light is integrated into theinformation (ASSIST) button. The diagnostic lightflashes throughout an activation but stays oncontinuously when a failure is detected. Amessage is given on the display: ‘ASSISTFAILURE’. There are four potential failure modes:1. No VEMS menu is displayed when the

information ASSIST button is pressed2. No activation is performed when the enter

button is pressed to make a selection

3. VEMS is unable to compute the location ofthe vehicle’s current position

4. The Navigation system is unable to displayany VEMS messages or would display thewrong VEMS messages.

Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI)In the UK the provider for RTTI is ‘Trafficmaster’.Information is collected from their own uniquenetwork of infra-red road sensors which monitorthe average speed of traffic. This information issent by radio data link to Trafficmaster’soperational headquarters. After processing andediting the information, it is transmitted in realtime, in words and graphics to Trafficmastercontrol modules installed in vehicles. RTTI will notbe available on early vehicles but could be Dealerfitted retrospectively.

Other markets will use different traffic congestioninformation services which will depend on marketinfrastructure and service provider support. Japanwill use the ‘Vehicle Information andCommunications System’ (VICS).

Voice Activation

JOL.275

GeneralVoice Activation, currently available in a limitednumber of markets, provides a convenient way ofcontrolling the following vehicle systems (wherefitted):

• Sound System (radio, cassette tape player andCD player)

• In-car Telephone• Climate Control System.

The system is controlled by the Voice button onthe left-hand side of the steering wheel. Voicecommands are picked up by a directionalmicrophone mounted on the headlining betweenthe overhead console and the sunvisor. Themicrophone is also used for the in-car telephone. When giving a command, audible feedback will beheard through the sound system speakers andmessages will be shown on the message centerdisplay. Audible feedback can be turned off ifrequired. The system is capable of storing uniquenametags for 20 radio stations and 40 phonenumbers. Verbal playback of nametag directoriesis provided by issuing the proper voice command(RADIO DIRECTORY or PHONE DIRECTORY).

Personal directories of nametags for phone dialingand radio station presets can be created andspoken command help is provided.

Language and AccentCommands are given in English in a naturalspeaking voice, without having to pause betweenwords. Most United kingdom accents (for vehiclesequipped with a UK Voice Module) or NorthAmerican accents (for vehicles equipped with a USVoice Module) are understood without difficultybut the system also provides for voice training, ifrequired. Voice feedback is given in UK English(for vehicles equipped with a UK Voice Module) orUS English (for vehicles equipped with a US VoiceModule).

Voice CommandsVoice commands are generally in the form of:• System, e.g. Radio• Function, e.g. Tune• Action Required, e.g. 99.7 (to select the

frequency).

Note:1. Voice commands cannot be given while a

phone call is in progress.2. While a voice command is being processed,

the command can be canceled by pressing theVoice button again.

3. Audible feedback can be interrupted bypressing the Voice button during the verbalplayback. In this case the command is notcanceled.
