It has been a great and successful year 2011 for JAR.
We are receiving more and more exposure, further
outreach in the Shanghai community, International
Schools supporting the group and in return we are
helping out SCAPA (Sichuan Qiming Companion
Animal Protection Center) and now the Suzhou Rescue
Group.
We have bigger and better things planned for the
coming year 2012!
Thank you again to everyone’s support. Please keep
spreading the word about us!
I want to wish you all a Happy Christmas and all the
very best for the coming New Year 2012!

JAR Pets of the Month: Mimi & Xiao Ya

Mimi (female cat)
DOB: 2009
Mimi has a very sweet nature, loves
attention and lots of stroking. She
has adapted well to indoor living
and does like company and
attention. She loves to sit next to you
on the sofa or lie at your feet. Mimi
enjoys playing with toys and is full of
fun.
Xiao Ya (female dog)
DOB: October 2008
Xiao Ya was taken home by the
rescuers when eating at a
restaurant. She must have been
abandoned. Xiao Ya is an
independent dog, however she
loves people as she shows a lot of
affection by licking people when
being held!

What does it cost to adopt an animal from JAR?
One of the most common questions we are
asked is "How much does it cost to adopt an
animal from JAR?"
Our response is this:
There is no fixed price on any animal that is up
for adoption. It is up to the discretion of the
adopter if they would like to make a donation.
However, with the growing increase of rescued
animals and expenses an amount of at least
300 RMB given to the group when adopting an
animal from us is greatly appreciated.
Please note that JAR is a non-profit animal
rescue group. We rely on donations from kind
hearted individuals which are then in turn used
for food, vaccinations, grooming, de-worming,
defleaing, de-sexing, and transportation.
Your understanding and support is much
appreciated by the group and the animals.

Documentary films about sad animals
DOCUMENTARY films about animal welfare are receiving attention
these days in China, which has no animal protection laws.
A number of short films exposing cruelty toward animals, such as
elephants and pigs, and depicting the sad lives of stray dogs and
cats have been screened publicly for a month online. They
appeared on the website of the First Chinese Documentary Film
Awards established by iSun TV that based in Hong Kong.
Around 200 short films of all types were screened and received votes
by Internet users.
The films about animals aim to raise public awareness of animal
welfare and of man’s relationship with animals and the natural
environment. They aren’t very polished but they are effective.
Though none of them received an award, they got a lot of votes
from the public. click here for the whole Shanghai Daily article

Help the Sichuan dogs
JAR’S members are trying to raise
more funds, collect blankets, stock
up on food for the dogs that were
rescued in Sichuan. We have
provided donations the last few
weeks but as winter nears, the
dogs are in need of more blankets,
beds and food. We are also taking
in donations, which will then be
used to place food stock orders
with You Mao (Online Ordering for
Pets) who are affiliated with JAR.
Please retain and gather any old
blankets/towels/sheets and/or
donate funds over to purchase
food for the 1000 dogs so we can
help the 2 rescue groups who are
compassionately & tirelessly
looking after the dogs.
They need our help & assistance.
THANK YOU!

Saving Porker
Porker was rescued at the weekend. The rescue
came to light when our boss informed us whilst in
the taxi, she saw Porker stuck in a cage! The cage
was the same size as him! No room to move
around, no water or food contained in his crate!
Cruel…just cruel!
We negotiated with the owner to have the pig
released for free as they wanted 800 RMB for it! In
the end, we ended up paying 400 RMB….
We asked around, called people, emailed in
hopes he can go to a farm and roam free! Luckily
enough, I was ecstatic to have the pig picked up
(thanks to Buddy Dog) and will be moving to his
permanent home at the Bio Tech Farm (thanks to
the owner owing a favor to JAR!).
JAR at Concordia Bazaar
We participated at the CONCORDIA Bazaar and
raised more awareness to the faculty staff and
passers by!
Thank you to our ongoing supporters, Chris L for
providing and donating a table to JAR and of
course our volunteers!
JAR at German School Christmas Bazaar
JAR was asked to participate and our kind senior
volunteers helped out and set up the table
beautifully!
We managed to raise 2410 RMB and raised further
awareness of what we do!
Well done and thank you for your support!
Five kittens
Five adorable kittens are looking for a home. Two
calico, two ginger and one spunky gray and white
one. They should make wonderful pets, as they were
with their mother up until two days ago and are no
getting used to indoor living and spoon feeding. They
are eating well and beginning to become playful now
that they are feeling at home.
If you are looking for a warm, fuzzy creature to help
keep you warm this winter, look no further than these
little furry friends.
Please email us: [email protected] if you are
interested!
Thank you for your support!
Chairman Meow!
We are looking for a caring home for a wonderful, formerly
abandoned kitten. I rescued her about 4 months ago and
she’s quite healthy after visits to the Vet and a steady diet.
She likes to play and eat and sleep and doesn’t ask for
much.
Can you provide Chairman Meow a permanent home?

Two puppies need your help!
I found Sasha and Billy in Lujiazui being sold by a criminal
woman. I identified immediately that they had been
mistreated and the markings to create a tiger appearance is
simply animal cruelty. They were being shoved inside a
bucket and handled very roughly. I had to do something. I
never would have forgiven myself. I certainly do not
condone her trade but I bought the puppies in the hope of
giving them a second chance. After rugging them up, I
raced them to the vet - sadly, the prognosis was grim. They
told me, they have been separated from their Mum far too
young and do not know how to feed themselves and
ultimately will die of starvation. I bought some special
formulated milk and I feed through a syringe. They are
responding really well now and making progress by the hour.
My daughters sing them lullabies, making the pups feel safe
and secure – It works too!! They were tested for many canine
viruses and thankfully all were clear.
The pups need to find a very loving home – I’m hoping
together as they make such a great team!
Meet Lotte
Lotte is around 2 years old and was rescued from the
streets. She has been vaccinated and dewormed.
She is a very kind, friendly and affectionate dog. Her
rescuers already own two dogs and will relocate in
January 2012.
Lotte is currently boarding at the Buddy Dog kennel.
If you are willing to help and adopt and provide her a
loving permanent home, please let us know!
Thank you.

Use of Barbarian Animal Trap in Yanlord Garden
Again!
We are shocked to discover that the use of animal
trap appeared in Yanlord Garden again! One of
the residents’ pet came home crying with a broken
leg and the trap is left on his leg!!! Today we found
another resident’s cat with another broken leg and
went hiding.
This has happened before in the March 2010. The
trap used last time was less hurtful to the animal. This
time, the trap is set to harm and kill!
We have been forced to face this issue every year.
We find it unacceptable that Yanlord Garden
being a highly regarded and respected
international community yet this kind of cruel and
uncivilized behaviour kept occurring on a yearly
basis.
We urge your attention and action to call the
management to stop this immediately as well as to
pass on this information to ALL you know:
1. That the management shall not allow outsiders to
come in to do such thing as these personnel are
unidentifiable and can be harmful to any residents,
2. That the management shall not conduct such
behaviour for the below reasons:
a. the trap is not necessary since there are rodents
pipe and cats in the garden already;
b. the trap is designed to hurt whatever is being
trapped and it is very barbarian and cruel;
c. the trap is dangerous to anyone who
accidentally got trapped to it including kids,
workers working around the garden and pets!
d. before setting any trap for rodents for argument
sake, the management needs to put a warning sign
in the area and the trap need to be safe for pets
and human! This type of trap is intended to catch
larger animals like cats, not rats!
Please help to stop this repetitive, extremely cruel
and harmful to the pets and human in contact trap
ONCE FOR ALL!!

OUR CHALLENGE
Every year thousands of animals are abandoned in China. Just like in many other developing
countries, this situation requires the attention and effort of several parties: government agencies,
NGOs, NPOs and more importantly: YOU!
Imagine how different this situation could be if more people were willing to open their homes to an
abandoned pet, if more animals were vaccinated, neutered and spayed, if more people made
donations, if more people were foster parents, if education on ethical treatment of animals could
reach everybody …
We at JAR have a great task ahead of us, but we cannot do it alone … WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
