JAKARTA CHAOS AND BLISS Experience a two faced world in Jakarta. From the hustle and bustle of the city to a tropical paradise MY TRAVEL! The honking of cars, guzzling of gas, muffling of mufflers, the grunt of engines all packed into one massive traffic jam. Nevertheless, I was able to get tours of a few kitchens at five star hotels. Our mission was to help Yayasan Emmanuel collect food that would’ve been thrown away when they were still edible and serve it to the less fortunate and needy. Honestly this day was more about being in the traffic rather than getting to get hands on with anything even though later in the day we went to the slum in North Jakarta where we got to give out five star fares to the slum families. Going to the Yayasan Emmanuel center in the Bogor area just outside Sentul was a fun experience, there we went and stamped, labeled as well as wrapped the books with plastic with protection for the next two hours. After stamping, labeling and covering all the books with plastic we loaded the mobile library and traveled to a nearby village where we got to read to the children and the play some games with them such as soccer, Giving out food to the slums was a very emotional experience.

MY TRAVEL!

Honestly this day was more about being in the traffic rather than getting to get hands on with anything even though later in the day we went to the slum in North

Jakarta where we got to give out five star fares to the slum families.

Going to the Yayasan Emmanuel center in the Bogor area just outside Sentul was a fun experience, there we went and stamped, labeled as well as wrapped the books with plastic with protection for the next two hours. After stamping, labeling and covering all the books with plastic we loaded the mobile library and traveled to a nearby village where we got to read to the children and the play some games with them such as soccer,

badminton and many more other activities. Isn’t it such a blessing that the poor village children cannot go to a library but they are fortunate enough to have a library come to them?

On Wednesday we went to Puncak to mountain bike along the tea plantations. The first part of the journey was a strenuous uphill pedal. The weather was good but it had rained earlier the last night so the surface had become rather slippery. Nevertheless, the scenery was very beautiful especially when we got to take in the breathtaking sunrise. In between our trip we stopped at a tea factory where we were given a tour of the factory together with the tea bag making process from drying the leaves to cutting and curling them. After that we got to sample some green

and black tea, we even bought some very sweet mangos. We then set off our trip by going downhill from the tea plantation to a small market where our buses were parked. The roads that we biked on were old and very much broken which made our ride bumpy and unpleasant for our bottoms, by the time we reached the market our thighs were soar and our backs were aching.

On the fourth day, we had set off early in the morning for the marina in ancol to catch our boat as the later we leave for Tiger Island the choppier the waves and even though we left at around nine in the morning everyone probably had the most dreadful voyage of their life, half way through our voyage all the passengers were asked to put on lifejackets which

panic struck us all. Eventually the waters did get calmer as we approached our destination.

At Tiger Island we unpacked into our rooms and changed into our swim suits before having lunch. After having an absolutely scrumptious feast we dove into the shallow waters surrounding the island to observe the inhabiting marine life, we saw many coral in different shapes and colors as well as many fish but the most interesting one was the stingray hiding in some kind of an underwater cave.

Later on, we travelled to a deserted island to improve our survival skills. There we learnt how to make a fire from rubbing to pieces of wood together. We also learnt how salvage food like going up to

the shore and cracking open some sea urchins or grilling them then eating their insides. Lastly we learnt how to purify water by building our personal makeshift water purifiers filling an aqua bottle with sand, charcoal from the burnt wood and crushed marmite.

We then relaxed and had some free time before having another magnificent spread of food before watching a documentary then a movie.

On our last day, we had an early breakfast and then went snorkeling where we found a lot more marine life and a lot less sea urchins. Upon coming back to the island we packed our bags and boarded our boat to leave the enchanting island.

All and all I found this trip to be amazing and like nothing I’ve experienced before considering I have lived in Jakarta my whole life which is fourteen years.
