Justine Schluntz the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year speaks to Lackland Elementary School 4th graders!

Justine Schluntz, a former swimming student-athlete at the University of Arizona, past-NCAA champion and 2010 Rhodes Scholar, is the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Schluntz accepted the award – among the most prestigious the NCAA bestows – during the 20th annual NCAA Woman of the Year event Sunday, October 17, at the Indiana Convention Center. The award honors female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility, demonstrated academic and athletics excellence while demonstrating extraordinary community service and leadership.

Schluntz majored in mechanical engineering at Arizona and graduated summa cum laude.

“Studying engineering as a female generated many challenges, but by working through these, I learned to persevere in the face of adversity in any setting,” she said in her personal statement on her nomination form. A committee of representatives from NCAA schools and conferences selected nine finalists from a pool of 30 selected honorees. Those individuals were identified from an initial pool of 131 conference and independent honorees representing all three NCAA divisions and multiple sports.

BOOKS FOR A CAUSE Written by Janae Lewis

Are you interested in donating your gently used books to a good cause? Well if you are, then please read on. Mrs. Duron's Family and Community Services class has taken upon the task of collecting books to donate to Haven for Hope. Haven for Hope is a homeless shelter in San Antonio that provides a place to stay for homeless families. In this facility

they have a library. The only thing wrong with the library is that it doesn't have very many books, and we want to change that.

We are collecting books for children ages 3-12. Holiday books, books about culture, picture books, and fun books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid are a few types of books that

would be great! You can drop off yours books in Mrs. Duron’s room, which is located by the high school patio. We will collect books from Tuesday, January 18th until Tuesday,

February 1st.

If you donate 10 books, you will receive a coupon for a homemade ice cream sandwich. This book drive is for a really good cause, and we won’t be successful without your help.

Thank you for your support.
