Did you know that there are 21,094 people living be-

low poverty level in Beaver County, according to the 2011-2012 census? Are you willing help make a differ-ence in the lives of so many? Generally, when this ques-tion is asked, the response

Honor MLK’s Day of Service by helping the needy in your communityis “I would like to, but what could I do?”

The answer to that ques-tion could be revealed at the Franklin Center/Re-tired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Beaver County’s community forum on Monday, January 19. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Com-munity College of Beaver County in the Learning Resource Room.

As you know, this day is recognized as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Ser-vice. It seems only fitting that the topic for discussion is serving the less fortunate

in the area. In keeping with addressing the needs of those below the poverty level, topics could include:

2 What is currently being done

2 W h a t n e e d s t o b e done that is not already happening

2 What community mem-bers like you are willing to do

Organizations that address these issues and govern-ment legislators have al-ready committed to being at this event. Interested youth from the Penn State Beaver Campus will be on hand to give their perspective, as

well. But due to the mag-nitude of the problem, we need to hear from you—the people who may be will-ing to help and/or have friends, neighbors or even family members who are struggling.

Please join us! There is no cost to participate but a large turnout is anticipat-ed, so please call (724) 378-7547 to reserve your seat today. If, for some reason you are not able to attend but would still like to help or provide input, we want to hear from you. RSVP has an open door policy and is ready and willing to listen. BCSN

Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors

January 2015 • Beaver County Senior News

It takes a community...

Angela admires the Snowman Tree, one of the trees in Elmcroft’s Christmas Tree Wonderland program.

By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child. I like to say that it takes a county to run

the Surprises for Shut-ins program sponsored by the Beaver County Of-fice on Aging (BCOA).

For 28 years, BCOA has provided a gift bag and a friendly visit to iso-lated older adults ages 60 and older living in their homes and apartments throughout Beaver County. I have had the great honor to coordinate the pro-gram each year. It takes a lot of help to get an average of 450 gift bags filled with about a dozen wrapped gifts to their destination.

Throughout the years, I have met many great individuals and orga-nizations who have assisted us in spreading good cheer to hundreds of older adults throughout the county. They are the people who donate items and money, wrap gifts and package the bags, and most importantly are the elves who deliver. Many of our donors and helpers participate year after year. Many people have told me that this project has become their Christmas tradition.

You never know in a given year who may be helping but somehow every year we seem to get enough gifts and to find deliverers. Along with the BCOA staff, the Beaver County community has been so generous and I want to let you know it does not go unnoticed.

Several years ago, Elmcroft of Chip-pewa, a personal care home, alerted us that they were having a Christmas Tree Wonderland, and Surprises for Shut-ins would be the benefactor of the proceeds. It is like a mini Festival of Trees. Elmcroft asks businesses in the community to purchase and decorate a tree with lights and orna-ments. The trees are displayed in their lobby and dining room for the month of December. During the month, the public purchases chances on the trees. At the end of the month, the winners are drawn. This past December, 11 businesses sponsored a tree. Three great things result from their program. The Elmcroft residents enjoy the trees during the entire holiday season, there are 11 happy winners of the unique, beautifully decorated trees at the end of the month and the proceeds benefit the Surprises for Shut-ins Program.

This year the trees were donated by: Elmcroft of Chippewa, Fenchel Law Offices, Brighton Pharmacy, Amedisys Hospice, Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehab, Gentiva Hospice, Gateway Hospice, Fox Rehab, Gallagher Home Health, Hilltop Laundromat and Dry Cleaners and At Home Nursing and Rehab. Thank you to Elmcroft of Chip-pewa and this year’s sponsors for a program that reaches many people and brightens their holiday! BCSN

walker now. As they zipped out of the parking lot onto Rochester Road, a small congregation gathered to witness the fun. Another long-time church friend, Carol Everly, snapped photos as they drove off.

“She was loving every minute of it,” Carol says. “It brought tears to everyone’s eyes.”

Doris has been a pianist at the church for about 70 years and also sings in the choir, but her career was as an obstetrics nurse at the former Beaver Valley General Hospital. She has three children, four grandchil-dren and nine great-grandchildren. She’s an avid seamstress, and enjoys making things for her family like stuffed animals, children’s soft toys, dolls, quilts and blankets. Doris has lots of hobbies but had never ridden on a motorcycle.

Beaver County senior asks to take a spin on motorcycle for her 92nd birthday

“I asked if riding that bike was the last thing on her bucket list,” Kyle recounts, “and she said, ‘No, it’s the first thing’!”

Shortly after her birthday event, Doris developed a couple of health

issues. After a brief hospitalization, she is now at Providence Care Cen-ter in Beaver Falls, the same facility where, until recently, she would visit every Tuesday and play music on the keyboard for the residents. Doris, we wish you well. BCSN

Members of Marion Hill Christian and Missionary Alliance in New Brighton gather to watch Doris and Lyle ride off.
