Louisa Chircop talked about her artwork ‘Fright and Delight – Bundanon’. The image depicts a vast panorama of the shoreline and tidal zone along the Shoalhaven River. Louisa gave us so much information regarding the making of such an impressive triptych, from the original drawing stage to the development of the work using photomontage. ART ON PAPER ARTIST TALKFor our artznight event coinciding with Art on Paper Award we were fortunate to have Louisa Chircop, Leah Bullen, Kerry Toomey and Christine Druitt-Preston talk about their work.

Leah Bullen’s work is called ‘Wunderkammer’. Leah spoke about the development of her drawings of places and gardens into watercolour and gouache monotypes. A practice she has been developing and exploring to produce this wonderful garden in a glass house.

Kerry Toomey’s ‘Mundhuii’ is a collection of shoes made from tissue paper. Kerry spoke about the making of the shoes and what the decorations meant.

She has decorated shoes with heritage lace – referencing her Colonial heritage and Echidna quills – which referenced

her childhood memories. Kerry spoke about her life, art and her heritage and how it now entwines with her art practice.

Christine Druitt-Preston’s ‘Not an ordinary kitchen’ is a linocut print. Christine talked about her drawings of the Margaret Ollie house recreation at the Tweed Gallery and how she then developed those drawings into lino cut blocks.

Christine also expanded on her art practice with mixed media and lino blocks.

The night was very interesting and we were very grateful to the artists and the people who attended the event.

Hello All, it only seems a short time ago it was the beginning of 2019. My address coincides with the current Hazelhurst exhibition, “Southern Swell” which continues until 2nd February 2020. This exhibition celebrates the shared experiences and love of the ocean which characterises a great deal of the Shire’s identity.

Friends of Hazelhurst and the Hazelhurst Gallery share a milestone celebration in 2020. It has been a quarter of a century since the formation of Friends of Hazelhurst and 20 years since the opening of Hazelhurst Arts Centre. Just as many people in the Shire share a love for the Ocean, back in 1995 a group of people in the Shire who shared a love of art became Friends of Hazelhurst and through their lobbying Hazelhurst Arts Centre was opened in 2000. Through a spirit of cooperation and shared vision the gallery and the Friends of Hazelhurst have arrived at where we are today celebrating who we are, just as “Southern Swell” celebrates who we are.

Looking back over 2019 Friends of Hazelhurst have brought to the gallery a wide range of artistic experiences including the very popular artztalks, our very own exhibition in the Broadhurst gallery, a recital by Gary Carsley, panel discussions featuring exhibitors from “Art Express” and “Art on Paper”, a David Hockney documentary, discussions in the Cottage from visiting artists and not forgetting “The Wall Of Art”, which gives local artists a chance & place to exhibit their art. 2020 will be no different with the committee planning and promoting events to supplement Hazelhurst’s 2020 exhibition program.

In my time spent working within the Friends of Hazelhurst I have realised its greatest asset is its people. With this year ending and the Friends of Hazelhurst AGM approaching in early 2020, think about how as individuals you can contribute to the sustainability of the Friends of Hazelhurst. Positions on the Friends of Hazelhurst committee are open for nomination. If you feel you have something to contribute don’t hold back – nominate now! As the year closes, I wish you a Merry Christmas, a safe and healthy holiday period and I look forward to welcoming you at our 2020 AGM on February 27th.

Kind Regards

Stephen VandenberghPresident Friends of Hazelhurst

Caroline McIntyreCaroline McIntyre is an abstract artist, born in France and now living in Sydney. After studying Industrial Design and Illustration at Saint-Luc School of Arts in Liège Belgium (École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc de Liège) from 1990 to 1993, she worked as a professional Graphic Designer in Liège, Paris and Sydney. Art has been a life-long passion which has been demonstrated by her involvement in

the art community, such as running art classes for children and more recently promoting local artists by coordinating exhibitions in her Regional gallery.

Caroline has participated in solo and group exhibitions in France and Australia. Her most recent exhibitions were held at The Art Passage and Hazelhurst Arts Centre.

“I have a fascination for colours and I find constant inspiration in the Australian Landscape. Colours are my visual memories and remain the key elements and starting point of each painting.

Layering colours and forms on the surface becomes a process that allows me to free myself from the subject. What interests me are the interaction, transparency and contrast between the colours themselves”

DIRECTOR HAZELHURST | MANAGER ARTS & CULTURE

Dear Friends

The year ahead is one of many milestones for Hazelhurst and our beautiful part of the world. It is hard to believe we opened the doors to our Hazelhurst 20 years ago this year and many of you will remember the celebrations and the official opening with Edmund Capon and so many in the community. Of course we wouldn’t have achieved such a milestone without the commitment and passion of the Friends who worked so hard to ensure we have the wonderful arts community hub which is Hazelhurst. It will be terrific to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Friends in 2020 and I look forward to joining with you.

This year also marks 250 years since the Endeavour entered Kamay Botany Bay and two cultures met on the shores of Kurnell changing the course of history in this country. This will be a time of truth telling, reflection and

sharing of culture and we hope you will join in the events and exhibitions during April and May 2020. We are working with our Aboriginal Advisory Committee and importantly our La Perouse Land Council to ensure these events are respectful and memorable. Those of you who experienced the Whales of the Gweagal event at Oak Park in October would have gained some indication of what inspiring events are in store so stay in touch through Council’s website

Look out for the celebrations to come for Hazelhurst and the Friends – I hope to see you all enjoying these milestones and reflecting on the achievements of the first 20 years of our wonderful Hazelhurst

Cheers

Suzanne Archer:Song of the CicadaIn 1994 when I was a visual arts student at UWS, I had the privilege of attending a lecture by artist Suzanne Archer. She had just won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting with her work Waratahs, and I fell in love with her richly textured, dramatic and powerful paintings. Her description of her bush studio was captivating, and the fact that she was a Wedderburn artist was intriguing, since my first painting teacher had been Roy Jackson, also from Wedderburn.

Forward to 2019 at Sydney Contemporary Art Fair, where I was lucky enough to be the first person to buy ‘Suzanne Archer: Song of the Cicada’, the Monograph written by Author and Curator Sioux Garside about Archer’s 50 year prolific career, encompassing her early years, the symbolism and inspiration behind her works, and much more.

If you are looking for a very interesting book to read this summer, or just want to add to your art book collection, you can’t go past this amazing book.
