Blessed with God’s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity.
By Jesus Christ’s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.
+ + +
God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy.
As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.
*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.
Prelude I Wonder As I Wander John Jacob Niles/ arr. Hayes Chiming of the Hour Welcome
Introit
And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell, born is the King of Israel. (hymn 147)
*Call to worship (based on Isaiah 60)
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. All are welcomed to the brightness of God’s dawn. With radiant eyes and expectant hearts, let us gather to receive the abundance God gives. Let us worship God with all that we have and all that we are.
*Hymn 152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright
*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
We say that we are among the wise who still seek you, O God, yet our actions betray us. Your bounty is more than sufficient for our needs, yet we continue to stockpile our own shelves and leave others to fend for themselves. Your grace overflows beyond fullest measure for all people, yet we continue to judge who is worthy to receive such goodness. Forgive us, Lord. Dawn in our hearts and illu-mine our lives once again, so that we might, in turn, radiate your justice and mercy all our days; through Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.
(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness
*The Peace of Christ
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC)
We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.
Call to Prayer
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, ‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, to bow and to bend, we will not be ashamed, To turn, turn will be our delight, ‘til by turning, turning we come round right.
Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES
The season of Epiphany begins this week (Jan. 6)
and runs until Ash Wednesday (March 1). During
Epiphany we celebrate God’s self-revelation to
the world in Jesus Christ. Our worship theme is
“Turn Round Right” (from the song “Simple
Gifts”), which highlights our response to God’s
self-revelation. Each of the lectionary passages for
Epiphany involves turning in some way—turning
from evil, turning direction, turning the other
cheek, turning the world upside down, and so
forth. Such turning doesn’t necessarily involve a
180-degree course change, but is more likely a
matter of sharpening our focus and shoring up
around the edges of our lives, both individually
and as a congregation.
MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY BEGINS JAN. 11
First Presbyterian Church kicks off 2017 with a
new midweek Bible study. The ongoing study
begins Wednesday, Jan. 11, with Sharon Youngs
leading an exploration on the theme of “light” in
the Bible, beginning in Genesis when God said,
“Let there be light.” The class will meet each
Wednesday, 6:00-6:45 p.m., in room 6. All are
welcome!

What is needed:
Monetary donations. You can donate to the
Presbytery of East Tennessee Disaster Relief
fund through First Presbyterian Church by
making out a check to FPC and noting “PET
Disaster Relief” in the memo line.
Gas cards. Many of those displaced by the
fires are the most vulnerable—hourly
workers who staff the resorts in Gatlinburg
and must find work elsewhere. We will
collect those in the church office, to be given
to the Red Cross for distribution.
