The M/V BERGE HELENE made its maiden voyage to the United Stateswhen it called on the Port of Houston recently. The 69,420 d.w.t.-ratedvessel is 815 feet long and 106 feet wide. Johns electedas MaritimeCouncil chairman

The board of governors of the Na-tional Maritime Council has chosen R.Kenneth Johns as its new chairman.Johns, president of Sea-Land Service,Inc., succeeds Charles I. Hiltzheimer,who is retiring from his position as chair-man of the NMC.

Johns has served as president of Sea-Land Service, Inc., since 1979, and hasheld a number of key managerial posi-tions during his 26-year career with thecompany. Sea-Land Service, Inc.

operates a fleet consisting of more than40 U.S.-flag vessels and 84,000 con-tainers.

The National Maritime Council is anonprofit trade association composed ofU.S.-flag carriers, shippers and maritimelabor, dedicated to the development of astrong, efficient, privately owned andoperated U.S.-flag merchant fleet, andto the growth of U.S. domestic and in-ternational trade.

These are just a few of the more than 100 persons from Houston’s sh pp ng community, consulatesand trade offices who attended a reception recently at the Whitehall Hotel. The M/T LAZARO CARDENAS II made its maiden voyage to the Port of Houston recently, bringing200,000 barrels of gasoline from Mexico to Oiltanking of Texas, Inc. The vessel, which flies the flag ofMexico, is named after a former president of that country. William McCauley, operations manager forEvans Steamship Agency, Inc., agents for the vessel, said the voyage is an indication that Mexico isstepping up its shipping operations. The 44,000 d.w.t.-rated vessel is 617 feet long and 93 feet wide.The vessel was launched in 1982. Standing before a Christmas tree, persons associated with the HoustonInternational Seamen’s Center present gift boxes to two seamen who weretaking advantage of the center’s many activities. At Christmas time, thecenter is decorated and shoe boxes are stuffed with items a seafarer findsquite necessary while spending those lonely days on the high seas. TheDiocesan Council of Catholic Women had approximately 110 women on

hand to decorate the center and stuff boxes. The group has been doingthis since the 1960s. Shown during the presentation of the boxes are, fromleft, Sister Rachael, a chaplain at the Seamen’s Center; Pat Oldham, presi-dent of the Diocesan Council; a seaman; lone Morosin, international affairschairman for the council; another seaman, and Fr.
