Our Challenge

Dear friends:

The prophet Isaiah used the analogy of marriage to describe Israel’s relation to God. God has espoused his very self to Israel. God delights in Israel like a groom delights in his bride. But this analogy cuts both ways. Our relation to God is like the marriage bond and the marriage bond is like our relation to God. Both are anchored in mutual love. In the passage from Paul’s letter to the earliest Christian community at Corinth, Greece, we see that he had to deal with the problem of competition in the Church. Members were quarreling over which spiritual offices were the highest. Paul insisted that all gifts were equally important. God equips each of us with a gift for the common good. None is unimportant. All are necessary. The “marriage” theme is continued in our gospel passage this weekend. We should not overlook the fact that Jesus performed his first miracle in the Gospel of John at a wedding feast. By this act, Jesus sanctified the ordinary things of life. The ordinary times and places of daily life are opportunities for encountering God as surely as the special time and places of worship. While it may seem insignificant, there is crucial symbolism in this first miracle of Jesus. It was not a coincidence that the water Jesus transformed came from jars used for ceremonial washing. The water signified the Jewish system of purification, and Jesus replaced it with pure wine, representing his spotless blood that would wash away our sins. The marriage vows are a covenant between the husband and the wife. There are certain expectations we have of each other. We expect certain things from those around us as well. We may not have formal contracts with everyone, but we hope that people will be true to their calling and professions. The word of God in Jesus Christ speaks to our thirst for a new reason to live, new purpose, new meaning…mission. To come to Jesus means to get caught up in his purposes in the world. The one who became our thirst on the Cross now offers us water that satisfies…a drink divine. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy

Stewardship of Offering

Someone once said, “You cannot out give God.”

Have you come to believe that some of the happiest people you know are the most generous? We are all called through the scriptures to be a generous and giving people. We are called to give generously of our time, talent and treasure. We recognize giving as a means to grow closer with God. Stewardship is transformative. Once truly embraced, stewardship changes the way we look at everything in our lives. Stewardship becomes a total way of life. We find that we give generously out of our deep love for God and we find great joy in that giving. Over the next few weeks as you continue with your New Year’s resolutions, the Stewardship of Offering Committee asks you to prayerfully reflect upon your Stewardship of Offering commitment for the upcoming year. Then on the weekend of February 9 and 10, you will be given an opportunity to join in the financial phase of Total Stewardship.
