Holy Family
January 6, 2011
Dear People of Holy Family:
As I sit down to write this rather late letter for the January Newsletter I realize this is the Seventeenth Anniversary of our
bishop’s Episcopal ordination in Rome. I take this opportunity to congratulate him on this occasion and thank him for the
seventeen years of service and concern he has shown us as our Bishop. As the people of his Cathedral parish we have
been diligently served by him. Few Bishops in the county take the time and energy to celebrate the Sundays of Advent,
Christmas, Lent and Easter with their Cathedral parish that Bishop Slattery spends with us. This gives us the opportunity to
know him much better than most Cathedral parishioners know their Bishop. So, we thank you Bishop Slattery for your pres-
ence and concern for the whole diocese but especially for your presence and concern for us.
Needless to say, life has changed in the rectory of the Cathedral. There is a true absence and loneliness without Msgr.
Halpine. A day does not pass without someone making reference or comment about our Msgr. Halpine. We truly miss him
and continue to offer prayers for the repose of his soul. One of his constant requests was that we pray for him after his
death and so I encourage all of you to continue to pray for him. He certainly served this parish and city well in his many
years of priesthood.
Last but not least I thank you for your generosity at Christmas. I thank God that we had good
weather and no blizzard. I thank you for your consideration and support of this parish. We have re-
ceived many “Over the Hump” contributions during the holidays and many generous donations for our
welfare as a parish. Thank all of you for your support. I truly look forward to our new year and all that
we hope to accomplish together during this year. May all of you have a happy and blessed new year.

BY THE RCIA MINISTRY TEAM
Advent and Christmas are a perfect
opportunity for our candidates and
catechumens to learn how Catholics
view the holidays. We are reserving
several rows each Sunday at the 10:00
Mass for the catechumens and candi-
dates along with their families spon-
sors. This is an opportunity to view the
Mass near the altar, and to join to-
gether as they learn about it. Our tradi-
tions are often confusing, and the
things we take for granted are alien to
many of these folks. This is the time for
us to demonstrate how we attend
Mass, and our actions can provoke
questions that bring the newcomers to
greater understanding of our customs.
The classes are always open for these
questions and our teachers have a
deep understanding of the history of
our faith, so they can reveal the rea-
sons and structure behind our tradi-
tions.
Catechumens, candidates and their
sponsors enjoyed a pot luck dinner on
December 15th. Our group has formed
a strong bond and they enjoy this won-
derful time to share our best recipes
and company. This particular group
was very enthusiastic about participat-
ing in this Mass and dinner. The social
aspect of our Christian community is a
challenge at Holy Family Cathedral
due to the widespread range of our pa-
rishioners. Unlike neighborhood
churches, getting to special community
functions requires some travel for
many of us. These new folks coming
into the Catholic faith need to know
that we do indeed have connect with
each other and do gather at Mass and
other opportunities as much as possi-
ble.

Notes from the Knightstand
BY MARTIN REIDY
A month ago - fresh and green- complimenting our Nativity scene. Now having done of late its task our cedar tree is Christmas Past. So,now it sets by the curb home for a moment to a passing bird. Sadly waiting for old Charon- and then across the Acheron!
Fifty-four Knights, wives and/or
guests plus the good Monsignor Gier
gathered once again in good fellowship
to celebrate the Christmas Season at
Eddy's the 6th of December to wrap up
in good cheer another fruitful year.
Ralph "Ed" Owen was honored as
Knight of the Year for both originating
and spearheading the Heiring Hall win-
dow renovation project.
Additional to an attesting Certificate
Ed was also awarded his own custom
window renovation kit: a scraper, putty
knife, and brush mounted on a walnut
plaque. Ed, always the essence of hu-
mility, related that the honors should
rightly go to those fellow scrapers Luis
Pena, John Dzurilla, Jim Gray, B.D.
Tidmore, Al Tanner, Steve Wire, John
Conner, and various kith and kin of the
aforementioned. Closing out the eve-
ning was the disbursement of some
twenty -four door prizes to the fortu-
nate winners.
A belated tip of the chapeau goes to
Jay Luetkemeyer and several Holy
Family students, parents, grand-
parents, and Knights of the Council
who participated in the annual run of
the Silver Rose — a K. of C. project
consisting of a silver rose relay from
Canada to Mexico City honoring Our
Lady of Guadalupe,patroness of the
Americas and led by that indefatigable
Grand Knight B.D. Tidmore this past
November.
Also, a tip of the chapeau to all who
donated to our annual turkey drive:you
are now an official member of our 400
CLUB! That is the number of turkeys
Deacon Tom herded out to Catholic
Charities on Nov.22/23. Actually, we
are fudging a bit - the number was
closer to 385 turkeys but 400 sounds
better.
MARTIN REIDY PRESENTS THE KNIGHT OF THE YEAR AWARD TO ED OWEN.
Finally, whoever absconded with the
5# Bar-B-Q from the kitchen freezer
took what was intended to feed the
downtrodden at the homeless center
the first Saturday in November.
Initially, it was assumed that some
other HF group just made an error in
taking what they assumed to be their
left-over. However, later two more so
labeled containers disappeared which
meant that the situation was more ne-
farious than first assumed. However,
those two cartons contained green
beans in one and broth in the other
which were leftover from our Novem-
ber Council dinner. Speak of poetic
justice!
In closing it is our sincere wish and
hope that each of you have a blessed
and peaceful 2011.
Pax.
Deacon Tom Gorman takes charity seriously. For
years—including many years before his ordination—
he has coordinated both the Cathedral’s annual Tur-
key drive and the annual Clothing drive.

school and high
school youth gave up

morning of Christmas
break to sort the hun-
dreds of coats, blan-
kets, and socks.

staff sends their
thanks to the Cathe-
dral parish for their
continued generosity.
