PLay IT aGaInJust before the dawn of the 20th century, the player piano was introduced to the world after decades of inventors tried to create a mechanism that would incorporate the concept of the music box into a large scale piano that would play on its own. St. Benedict’s Health Center is grateful to have received a player piano which was donated by the family of former residents, Sue and Joe Thomas. Currently, however, this player piano needs additional funding for repairs and part replacements. activity Director Dani russell has been working with a master piano technician* who specializes in these instruments, and who is now authentically restoring the inner workings of this wonderful donation.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to hear this priceless piece of our history play again? If you are interested in donating player rolls for the piano and/or financially supporting our efforts of helping our piano play again, please contact Dani at 701-456-7242, [email protected], or simply use the envelope in this edition of Memories for your contribution to this fun project! Together, we can help bring this impressive instrument to life for our residents to enjoy.
*Our master piano technician also helps maintain north america’s largest collection of player pianos, orchestrions, and a Gypsy Fortune Teller machine (similar to the Zoltar machine in the movie “Big”, starring Tom Hanks). This collection is located at the nevada City Music Hall in nevada City, Montana.

Mary Ann Binstock and Tommy Peters from Generations Daycare share a moment of laughter during a weekly intergenerational visit.
L IT TLE HanDS, B IG SMILESat St. Benedict’s, we believe that the interaction that happens between generations helps to strengthen an ongoing bond and appreciation for individuals of every age. Every Wednesday, children from Generations Daycare come to spend time with residents and
construct crafts or make fun food projects. The residents gather around tables and look forward to the fun and laughter that these visits always bring. Some favorite activities have included coloring Christmas pictures, constructing marshmallow snowmen and building towers out of foam blocks. This is one of the many weekly activities that are an option for residents at St. Benedict’s Health Center.

auTuMnFEST
TrEaTS FrOM Our GarDEn
Beams of sunlight streamed through the stained glass windows and projected vibrant mosaic patterns on the parishioners. as the Tony Weber Band prepared to play the much anticipated polka music, excited murmurs filled the chapel. nearby, the air was rich with the smell of deep fried turkey, cabbage rolls, cheese buttons and other ethnic food favorites. There was no question that St. Benedict’s 20th annual autumnfest had begun.
The day commenced with the time-honored Polka Mass, presided by Father Jerry Kautzman. afterwards, residents, family and friends could make their way over to the ethnic food meal in Benedict Court and feast on the many savory dishes with krum kaka for dessert. next, they wandered over to the bake sale and craft show. residents, volunteers and community members all joined together in St. Benedict’s living room to display their various crafts including fabricated eggs, gifts from Medora, hand-made dolls, blankets, home made doggie treats, jewelry and much more.
The line for the bake sale stretched across the room as people waited to get their hands on the delicious kolaches, kuchen, popcorn balls, popcorn cakes, cake balls, brownies and other baked goods made by volunteers, residents and staff. The children found the cake walk signs quickly and lead their families
to the energetic music coming from the Community room. a table full of cakes, some made and donated by local high school students from Trinity and South Heart, greeted them at the door.
at the end of the day, children and adults alike left with hands full of cakes and crafts and bellies full of delicious food. St. Benedict’s 20th annual autumnfest was a success thanks to the volunteers, residents, staff and community members. We can’t wait for next year!
On September 14th, several residents gathered near the main hallway of St. Benedict’s to display a bountiful basket of corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers as part of the annual Produce Sale. The colorful vegetables were grown in the garden on the side of our patio area. During the warm days of summer and early fall, this area is a favorite place to gather and talk with friends and family. With the dedication of our residents, the garden produces wonderful treats year after year.

On Halloween, it was all treats for the children that walked through our Community room, which was turned into a big trick-or-treat neighborhood party. residents dressed up in fun costumes and handed out candy and each corner of the room had a game for the children and residents to enjoy. all the ghosts, goblins, witches and fairy princesses left with bowls brimming with candy. Thank you for helping make this annual open house fun for everyone involved!
Every month, St. Benedict’s graciously hosts the Dickinson Ministerial association (DMa) meeting that welcomes priests, pastors and chaplains from Dickinson and the surrounding area to come together and support one another. They eagerly gather at Benedict Court for prayer, fellowship, discussion and how to best respond to community and area needs. We welcome with open arms our local spiritual leaders to experience our hospitality first hand in a warm and friendly environment as they tend to the spiritual needs of our community. If you are a local clergy member and would like more information on DMa, please contact Pastor ron Hodson at 483-0052.

of the reason for holding such events. Watching the residents enjoy features such as the Mobility Courtyard and the remodeled Hair Salon, Dining room, Tabga Café as well as the beautiful stained glass windows in our Chapel, reminds us of the benefits from past supporters of events like the Candlelight Dinner. It also provides an opportunity to stay focused on our commitment to providing the best quality of care for our residents in a home-like, peaceful environment where health, independence and choice come to life.
Community support is a vital part of fulfilling this vision. By sponsoring the Candlelight Dinner, your donation will help St. Benedict’s continue to complete the remaining portion of the resident rooms remodeling project with a focus on new carpeting and flooring, new cabinetry and other architectural enhancements.
There are limited tickets available for the Candlelight Dinner this year. For more information, please visit our website at www.saint-benedicts.org and contact rebecca Bowen at 701-456-7358 or [email protected]. We appreciate your continued support – thank you!

Every week, residents and family members look forward to our mass services, but when Trinity Elementary students greet them at the door, they know they are in for an extra special service. Every month, a different group of students from Trinity Elementary and their teacher donate their time to come and sing in our Chapel. after the service, students help residents get home after church. The intergenerational connection is a huge benefit for both the children and our residents and everyone looks forward to their kindness and energy.
The national attitude towards long term care facilities once consisted of uncertainty and trepidation, but St. Benedict’s continues to be a driving change in this perception. Walking into St. Benedict’s Health Center for the first time, a person may be surprised at how at home and welcome they feel. Our daily choice of activities allows residents to socialize and have fun, while our nutrition program and in-house rehab Visions therapy department help residents receive compassionate care tailored to their individual needs.
In addition, because we are a health center, we not only care for long-term residents but also open our doors to short stay clients that need a place to recover before returning home. rehab Visions, partnering with St. Benedict’s, is proud to offer accelerated Care Plus (aCP) equipment in the therapy room for the benefit of our residents and short stay guests. aCP equipment is known among physicians nationally as being superior and providing the best results, helping clients recover faster and stronger. The goal of the therapist is
always to help our residents and short stay clients heal and reduce any pain or incapacity that an injury or condition may be causing them.
aCP equipment, along with other quality physical therapy machines and outstanding staff members, continue to help St. Benedict’s keep it’s 5 Star Status with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Every year, CMS surveys nursing homes and rates the facilities on the overall value of care received and takes into account health inspections, nursing home staffing and quality measures. Looking at the quality of our care and the results we achieve, it may be no surprise that St. Benedict’s continues to hold a 5 out of 5 star rating. For more information on these ratings, please visit www.medicare.gov/nhcompare. We appreciate the feedback we receive from our residents and family members and hope that the communication continues to grow. Thank you to all of our community members that support our mission here to provide compassionate quality care with special concern for the underserved and those in need.

STEWarDSHIPWhat identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. as Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.
Jesus’ disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another.
