JANUARY 2016 1

New Years greetings to all in V6.

Well, six months of the Lions year has gone by and I suppose we should reflect on that time

and review our goals and achievements.

Has your club planned or done a new service project? Is the Club happy and harmonious and focussed on service? Has your Club maintained its membership?

My thought is that there is less than six months in this Lions Year and that it would be nice to

have something to show for it.

As Clubs are getting back into full swing it is a good opportunity for Presidents to reassess

their goals

The nation is once again bearing the brunt of nature. Bushfires, storms and flooding.

Somewhere someone is copping it. In our own District we are dealing with aftermath of the

Indigo Valley fires. A Blazeaid crew is on deck for the next 3 months replacing fencing and

cleaning up. Our Lions will be providing evening meals for the volunteers two nights a week.

If your club can help out at the Barnawatha base, please call Yackandandah President, Paul

Shortis on 0407 854 829 or [email protected]. Well done to Yack Lions for taking the

initiative.

Due to the work of the Lions of the District we have been awarded the Silver

Dignity Pin for positive membership growth. This really shows that we have

mostly been doing the right thing. We have been seeking new members and

looking after our existing members. Looking after our existing members is

probably the most important aspect of Club care and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Small Clubs

seem to handle this the best, because they really are a family. Bigger Clubs need to do more

work to achieve the same results. It is something we overlook because it is assumed that a

big Club is ok, because it is a big Club. It is much harder to maintain focus and cohesion in a

bigger Club and therefore a more conscious effort is needed to keep track of apologies and

absences and general member satisfaction.

Youth Exchange

January means that our Youth Exchange program kicks back into gear. Host families for

incoming youth are needed and candidates for the outgoing program. Information can be

found at http://lionsclubs.org.au/activities/youth/ye/.

I saw a quote the other day, “I see humans, but not

humanity”. It is interesting that the whole focus of Lions

Clubs is humanity: build up, promote, create, foster,

encourage, unite and of course serve humanity.

We should not forget this.

DG Steve

Through ALVIF, Australian Lions have the opportunity to become one of Helen Keller’s “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade Against Darkness”.

Through the talking bar code scanner, the Foundation is able to give people independence and confidence. Furthermore, our grant program means that we can provide help to those people who can least afford this technology.

The ‘Bar Code Reader’ is ever popular with our recipients as well as the Blindness agencies around Australia. Whilst we have managed to sponsor over 800 of the units to date, there is a constant and increasing demand for this amazing technology.

The constant high demand placed on us for the provision of the popular Bar Code Readers, the support, the maintenance, as well as the upgrade of the existing readers means that the Foundation is extremely busy and requires constant funding.

We greatly appreciate the financial support received from all Clubs, which has allowed us to provide this essential support mechanism to many of those in need.

On November 26th the Lions Club of Wangaratta invited Angela Reynolds along to explaining her work supporting locals with vision issues.

Hard working Lion Mr Kyle Cogan presented Angela with a Christmas cake and demonstrated the basic gear that he uses as part of his daily life.

This beautiful statue can be yours for a $500 donation to the Follow your Dream Foundation. This Anne and Barry Palmer Fellowship donation can be used to support a family for 12 months with education, food, micro finance and health. Not bad for $500

Projects undertaken by the Foundation:

Water purification installed to service 19 villages

BENALLA

Students Nathan Dowe, Lauren Wright & Marcus Decker and teachers Kirsty Halligan, James Carboon & Daniel Hogarth, from the Benalla P12 College gave us an insight into their experience of walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

As this project is not part of the P12 College curriculum, they rely on donations to support this educational excursion.

They trained for 4 months, 4 nights a week to reach the fitness level required. The track is 96km long, passing through many farms and villages. Rising at 6am to have breakfast and stopping to make camp between 3 – 4pm, it took them 8 days to complete the walk. The students were very much appreciated by our members for their memorable experience of walking the Kokoda Track.

Maeve Larkin is a Dance Movement Therapist for Memory Bridge, an organisation working in partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia. She was brought up in Benalla and now lives in Tatong and has worked with Aged Care for over ten years in association with Cooinda Village.

In this area of Victoria there here has been an increase in numbers of people with Dementia, with a 205% growth in prevalence. Loneliness is their major problem, they lose the ability to speak and communicate.

This can be reversed by involving them in dancing, increasing movement. Then they focus on communication with hand rubbing and using their feelings to learn new languages, and take part in courses. Selfhood, love and conversation reverses loneliness and connects these people to others and the community. Maeve wants our citizens to become aware of the conditions of these people and become a Dementia friendly community. She will be holding a fundraiser for this at the Swanpool Cinema in 2016.

“Connect with the stillness… the source of our being!” Maeve was very much appreciated by our members for her valuable help to those in need. Maeve was thanked by Lions President Bruce Walker and presented with a certificate of appreciation.

Lions had a lovely Christmas party on 17th December with a new member inducted into the club. She is Jessica Plum and was sponsored by Margaret Poels. They are pictured with President Bruce Walker. It is so great to see young ones joining the club!

children

BENALLA

About 55 people attend and they enjoyed a BBQ lunch before Santa arrived on the fire truck. After photo's were taken of each child with Santa, everyone was entertained by the Clown performing various tricks much to the excitement of the children. They also enjoyed playing on the jumping castle and in the animal nursery.

Santa and his little Elf have been very busy, first paying a visit to the Evergreen Ladies at the Golf Club for their Christmas Luncheon. Then they appeared at Woolworths, where children visited him, having their photo taken sitting on his knee and whispered their "wish list" in his ear.

Both Santa and his Elf visited Alkoomi and Cooinda Aged Care homes to wish all the residents a Merry Christmas. Santa then makes his last appearance at the Carols by Candlelight in the Rose City Gardens on Sunday evening, before going home to pack his sleigh ready for his big night on Christmas Eve.

The Carols were held in the Town Hall due to difficult weather conditions. This was organised by the Benalla Lions Club. It was a lovely evening with many talented artists performing.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas and 2016!!!

There is an amazing group of retirees travelling around Australia repairing fences after a disaster. Be it flood, fire or any other disaster.

BlazeAid CombatReady trailers were towed across Victoria to new BlazeAid base camps starting at Scotsburn and Barnawatha- Many thanks to Max McClean of the Moyston CFA and John Hart plus James Carter and Team of Euroa Rotary - including CR. Emmerick for getting $150,000 of fencing tools etc up there ready for opening start on Jan 4

On 4th January 2016 they will be arriving in Indigo Valley to carry on their wonderful volunteer work. Beechworth Lions Club will be providing a meal on Tuesday 5th January 2016, and more to come as needed.

All Clubs in the area are asked to assist with

meals while the team is in the area.

COHUNA

Training up the next generation! Lions and Leos

cooked a BBQ tea for the Cohuna Junior Basket Ball

Association for their Christmas Break up. Leo Emily

took over the job of cooking.

Santa had a number of visits around Cohuna, calling

into the Cohuna Kangas Footy Club, taking a ride on

the train with the kids, young and old before

checking

on some

older fellas

in the Club

rooms to

make sure

everything

was under

control.

Leos Acacia and

Georgina were

also out and

about helping

Santa make his

way around town

with the “Lolly

Toss” truck.

On Christmas Eve,

Santa visited the local

hospital, Nursing

Home and Village to

wish all a Merry

Christmas. He also

delivered lollies to

children waiting on

street corners around

town and listened to their requests for pressies. The

CFA were on hand to ensure that Santa kept to

schedule before taking off for his big trip.

But, before that could happen,

he needed a “Santa Nap”

We had a call from Bunnings

to see if we could help out with a

“Sausage Sizzle” in Echuca on the 27th December!!

Not to miss an opportunity to put the name of our

club out there in the public, we took on the job.

Wow, a very busy day, which is why there is only a

photo at the start!

This was our first time at Bunnings, and hopefully not

our last.

ECHUCA LEITCHVILLE

Festive residents enjoy “Paying it Forward”

Three Echuca-Moama community groups are thousands of dollars better off, all thanks to the latest Illawarra Drive neighbourhood “Christmas Lights Display”.

A total of $3,707 was collected between December21st to 24th, with the funds to be split between Echuca Lions Club, Echuca Moama Veterans Support Centre and the Echuca Girl Guides.

Lion John Simson said around 60 houses took part in this year’s display, which has been held annually since 2008. Passes by are encouraged to donate with collections tins placed around the area.

“Credit has to go to this neighbourhood for putting on an excellent display” he said.

It was an absolute bumper crowd on Christmas Eve and the generosity of people was just incredible. Some people put in $20 and $50 notes!

Girl Guides manager, Denise Appelbee, said the group appreciated the funds it received, with it battling to stay afloat due to low numbers.

“This is a huge financial boost to us and comes at a very good time” she said.

The event was the brainchild of Illawarra Drive residents Greg and Helen Taylor, who saw an opportunity to capitalise on the large numbers driving past to look at the displays.

Greg thought if you could make $1 from each car passing, you could make a difference in the area. The display brings people together from all over the area. Credit must go to the residents of Illawarra Drive for putting up with the traffic during this time.

This years display was sponsored by Charles L King Real Estate, Echuca.

Leitchville Lions assisted Santa to get around

town, calling into the see visitors at the

Caravan Park and around the streets.

On Thursday 7th January, members of

Cohuna joined Leitchville for their Annual New

Year dinner at Kow Swamp. The past two

years, this dinner has been washed out or was

too hot to hold at the park so was held at the

Scout Hall. It was great to be back at the park

and enjoying the beauty around us.

Other than being a very significant

archaeological site, Kow Swamp is one of

Leitchville Lions project areas, providing a

BBQ with solar powered lighting, Not to

mention the beautiful backdrop of Kow

Swamp. There is no better way to start off the

year than with good fellowship, friends, food

and good wine!

KERANG

When times are tough, Lions Clubs International are there to help. On Monday 14th December, Joyce Keighran of Kerang lost her house and contents to a terrible electrical fire. Thanks to V6 Foundation, the Lions Club of Kerang were able to present Joyce with a cheque for $2,500 to help her with her immediate needs. When PDG Lion Peter Niall presented Joyce with the cheque, she was overwhelmed and so thankful! Lion Greg Gin was glowing in his praise, saying, "Joyce and her late husband Noel have always been great supporters of Lions, always buying Lions Christmas cakes and tickets in all our raffles. When Kerang Lions did the early Driver Reviver site in the 80's, Joyce and Noel through their management of Roberts and Martins SSW, donated tea, coffee, and biscuits for at least 5 years before Driver Reviver went Statewide." The Lions Club of Kerang are proud to be able to help their own residents in times of need! As our motto says - " We Serve!"

The Lions Club of Kerang was still busy over the Christmas/New Year period. As per usual, we manned the gates at the Kerang Boxing Day Races. Great weather, excellent crowds with people coming from near and far! Much fellowship and good for the town economy!

New Year's Eve Festivities in Kerang's Atkinson Park were a huge success judging by the amount of food and drinks sold by the Lions Club of Kerang. Even though it was a very hot day and night, the big queues of people had Lions so busy that only one pic was taken and that was late in the night! The same thing happened at Carols by Candlelight, so I

guess that is a good omen! Lol! Thanks very much to all the public for supporting all Lions fundraising efforts. Congratulations to the NYE organisers and hopefully the town can return to the bustling, busy levels of the Kerang Korroberee in its heyday!

Another devastating house fire last Friday night has left another Kerang family homeless. The Lions Club of Kerang together with V6 Foundation have come to their aid with a cheque for $2500 to help them with their immediate needs. It will be a long haul for them but the Kerang community is rallying behind them and hopefully they will be back on their feet soon. Mum Krystal is recovering from her burns and injuries she suffered in getting out of the burning house. Paul, Krystal, Tahlia, Caidyn, Bailey and Conner are shown here with delight and surprise at receiving the cheque from President John Poole with PDG Peter Niall and District Treasurer Jeff Jackson looking on.

Great to see Lion Jenny Shields back home in Kerang after a long stint in Melbourne for health reasons. Her Lions Hearing Dog, Chelsea will be back from Adelaide soon which is fantastic! Her garden was in need of a bit of TLC, so a couple of Lions did a bit of mowing, weeding, spraying and raking this morning! They were so busy that no photos were taken again but judging by the smile on Jenny's face, they must have done a good job! A case of Lions helping each other!!

MOAMA

Moama Lions were very proud to award an "Outstanding Service Award" to three of their members in appreciation of their dedication as a members of our Club and to Lions International.

The award was presented to Lions Des Murray, Ray Turner and Gerry Van Eyk by President Robert Hardwick, These Lions have a combined 74 years of service to Lions.

Unfortunately Lion Ray was unable to attend the presentation. Well done Lions!

Spirits high at carols Not even the sudden, and unexpected, rain could dampen the spirits of those at Carols by Candlelight on Sunday night.

Despite the gloomy late forecast, hundreds gathered to celebrate the holiday season, spend time with their loved ones and meet the big man himself.

Santa’s arrival on a fire truck was certainly a highlight for the children gathered at Kerrabee Soundshell in Moama, but the district performers — including Jefferson Smith, dancers from Dance Fitness Factory and children as young as 10 — gave the man-in-red a run for his money.

Moama Lions President Bob Hardwick, said although numbers were down on past years, the team was pleased with the successful night. ‘‘We sold out of almost everything,’’ he said. ‘‘We had a few things to battle — the total fire ban meant we couldn’t use our barbecues, so we resorted to fry pans.

‘‘The rain kept a few people away but it all turned out fantastic in the end, we’re very happy.’’

Murray Shire mayor John Pocklington gave a speech underneath a stunning tree light display before Father Tink gave an moving address.

Thanks to all Lions who helped out at Carols by Candlelight on December 15th. It was great to see Bill and Yvonne handing out books and candles, Jeremy, Nick, Les and Ron barbecuing?

Just the right number of sausages and hamburgers (thanks, Jeremy, for the ordering suggestion), ably assisted by Mary and Judy.

Particular thanks to Mary and Judy, because I had not ‘button-holed’ them before the event and they turned up to help anyway!

Thanks also to ‘non Lions’, Lou W, Phil O’Bryan, Mariel Anderson, Richard and Rachael (I don’t know their surname), Barbara Allen and Tara Hunt, who helped out by (not in this order), handing out lollies, setting up and packing up, and ‘becoming’ The Singers at the last moment! It was very gratifying to have people from outside our Club volunteer to help. Thank you!

Thanks also to the bands, both Primary Schools, and the Spookies for their contributions. I know that, for many, it is a bit of a chore getting organised for Carols by Candlelight, but it is quite evident from the numbers of families attending, that they really appreciate the event.

It is a community event which many look forward to, and it is one which brings together a great cross section of the citizens of the Upper Kiewa Valley (by the way, it also brought a visit from our local Federal MP Cathy McGowan, who snuck in ‘incognito’ and spent quite some time talking with Bill and Yvonne, amongst others), and we all should be happy to keep up the ‘tradition’.

In the Club, we are always happy to hear of any ways you may think of improving the event; it may even be a good idea to have a little group of interested parties meet some time before the event to help us put it on.

As well as being ‘general dogsbody’, Rod Hyde was handing out lollies and was approached by a number of young girls (had to be Rod, didn’t it?) who expressed an interest in joining the Club!! There has been considerable, excited discussion since, and there will be more to think about next year.......... Keith Pike, President, UKV Lions Club

NATHALIA UPPER KIWA VALLEY

Nathalia Lions members got up to some real antics when the club held its 2015 Christmas breakup, and proved some people never grow up really, they just get bigger.

When Santa visited some members took the opportunity to let him know what they wanted!

Lions added to the excitement of New Years' Eve by holding a Carnival in Nathalia.

The Carnival itself was a huge success providing lots of entertainment for all concerned young & old.

The Fireworks at midnight went of in spectacular fashion, and with a big bang, a real crowd pleaser.

The smiles on all the children’s faces on the rides was fantastic to see, especially the Nathalia Lions Ferris Wheel, which proved to be a tremendous attraction.

Thanks to all the Nathalia Lions & friends of the Nathalia Lions for their support to run this function for the benefit of the public.

President Peter Hogan & Lion Norm Walsh were on shift when this photo was taken.

WANGARATTA

Guest Speaker - Deputy Commissioner of Police - Shane Patton gave a bit of a background on his time in the police force since starting at the academy in 1978. He also explained what changes in manpower, equipment, and operations had occurred over that time. Mention was also made of the challenges the force is currently facing, including terrorism, drugs, gangs, and some internal problems that made the media recently. Shane spoke for a lengthy period, but always held his audience with fascinating insights from his 37 years of law enforcement in Victoria. A few highlight facts/opinions - Royal commissions are not necessary because no real problem with corruption (as in other states) and efficient inquiries are carrying out reform - 1 in 250 drivers - too much alcohol but 1:15 have other drugs but usually not tested - Police pursuit policy changed in July with major restrictions now – being reviewed - $2.5 billion business and “we get the best tickets to the greatest show” (Mick Miller) - 70,000 family violence incidents reported to police every year - Present ice epidemic compares to heroin in late 70’s – waste water monitoring used! This was followed by a very interesting question time. A most entertaining evening.

Carols by Candlelight drew a very good crowd this year, in excess of 3,500 and in almost perfect weather. The catering trailer and cool room setup worked very well and not too much food was left over. The Leos assisted with candle and cake sales. Everything seemed to go quite well with the setting up, the running of the night, and the packing up. Thanks to Clive and everyone else involved.

It was great to see the all inclusive choirs (which includes some Lions – oh no not Graham??) + Wayne Robinson doing another great job and of course the name of the late Lions Verner Kentmann standing out in the midst of the superb decorations and the excellent lights!!!

WANGARATTA

A donation from the Lions Club of Wangaratta has given the Cox family a much needed boost this Christmas.

The club donated $1,100 to help Shannan and Russell Cox buy a state of the art bench top food processor which they needed to help create nutritious meals for their three year old son, Declan.

Declan has been diagnosed with autism, is

believed to have an organic, neurological condition and appears to have a number of brain abnormalities, which are yet to be determined.

While there is a long way to go before they find out the full extent of Declan’s health challenges, Shannan said his happy nature and infectious sense of humour makes dealing with it a little easier.

Lion Graham Whitehead became aware of the families situation through a work colleague, and was delighted the club was able to do something practical to help the family.

Graham raised the idea with Club members, they were more than happy to contribute to make a tangible difference to a young child’s life.

The amazing part was that the club embraced it immediately, saying, “this is the sort of things we have to do in our local community - it’s a true community service.

That’s what we are all about.

“We Serve”

Christmas joy for Declan….

STREET SWAGS

“On any given night in Australia, 1 in 200

people are homeless”

“The Street Swag is made of high-quality Australian canvas that is mildew resistant and breathable. The Street Swag also has a high-density flame resistant foam mattress. Designed for those living on the streets, its discreet appearance and camouflage colours offer warmth, comfort and safety to those who need to be invisible.

“The Street Swags are made by Australian prisoners who gain qualifications and skills, improving their chances of employment after incarceration, and helping to break the cycle of poverty, crime and homelessness. The swags are then rolled and packed by school children who learn about giving back to the community.

“Street swags are incredibly important while someone is looking for accommodation. Over 100,000 people are homeless on any given

night in Australia. Over 55% of all people are turned away while looking for immediate accommodation and over 80% of families are turned away.

A Street Swag can save a homeless person's life when it's cold or wet outside, providing basic comfort, shelter and shade when they need it most.”

Leo of the Year - KATERINA BLEKIC

The 2015/16 MD201 Leo of the Year, Katerina Blekic, has received a Victorian Premiers Volunteer Champions Award for Youth Volunteering in 2015.

Katerina was one of nine young, outstanding youth volunteers presented with an award by the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday 3rd January 2016.

No stranger to awards, Katerina was also the Victorian Agricultural Society’s junior

ambassador, she said the honour left her humbled.

“Volunteering has helped me as much as it lets me help others”, Katerina said.

“One of the things I enjoy most is helping other young volunteers gain confidence through their involvement with groups such as Leos.

“My family is also very community orientated and I would not have been able to achieve all that I have without the support of my family and friends”.

In addition to her work with the Sunraysia Leo Club, Ms Blekic is also on an international advisory panel for Leo clubs, and combines her volunteering efforts with work on her family farm.

As if that isn’t enough to keep her busy the hard-working Leo is also completing a degree in community development through Murdoch University

Congratulations, Katerina from all in
