GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH

Happy New Year to you! Are you excited about what

2016 may have in store for you? Or anxious about

what the future may hold? It seems to me that

approaches to a new calendar year vary enormously -

for some a New Year is a clean sheet of paper waiting

to be written on and you just can’t wait to get started; for others a New Year

is approached with caution and even anxiety…what will happen in the

future? - will this year bring new opportunities? Or new challenges? The

answer is that it will almost certainly bring both in some form or another -

so how should you and I respond?

Our verse for the year this year is Psalm 46 v 1 “God is our refuge and

strength”. The person who wrote Psalm 46 knew what it was to face

challenges beyond his control. This person’s life journey seems to have

included some particularly challenging events which are symbolised in the

Psalm ( see centre page of what’s on) by references to earthquakes, to

mountains tumbling into the sea and roaring foaming oceans. These events

were beyond his control, but the writer of Psalm 46 recognises that even

when changes to his circumstances take place which leave him feeling

unsettled, even disturbed and distressed – God is with him as his refuge

and his strength. God is the Psalmist’s place of safety - his refuge - and

God is the Psalmist’s source of ability to endure - his strength - so he is

able to proclaim “We will not fear”.

Whether we are thinking globally, locally or even personally the first words

of Psalm 46 “God is our strength and refuge” are good words to meditate

upon as we move into a new year. Whether we are approaching a new

year with excitement or a degree of anxiety, the first words of Psalm 46,

“God is our strength and refuge”, are good words to take to heart - solid

words which remind us to root our plans for the future in Him. So if you

haven’t made a resolution yet for 2016 here’s a suggestion - resolve in

2016 to grow a closer relationship with the Lord - for he is always our

refuge and strength

God Bless you, Christine

Our Verse of the Year is Psalm 46 verse 1

Here is the Psalm from which it is taken.

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the

mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its

tumult. Selah

4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy

habitation of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when

the morning dawns.

6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the

earth melts.

7The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought

on the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and

shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

10“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am

exalted in the earth.”

11The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

OPEN DOOR AT CHRIST CHURCH IS

CELEBRATING ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

Open Door at Christ Church is

coordinated by Fran Bridgewater. Fran

writes “Vanessa Renshaw had been

organizing Open Door at St. Mark’s

Church and approached me in

November 2014 and asked if I would be

interested in managing the new Open

Door Friday morning drop in at Christ

Church, Cobridge. At the time, I worked

on a Friday so thought that I would have

to say sorry but no I couldn't do it. After spending some

time praying about the situation I decided to ask my work manager if I

could possibly swap my day off from a Thursday to a Friday,

expecting him to refuse, but God answered my prayers and my

manager agreed to changing my day off. Since January 2015 it has

been a privilege to serve God and the more vulnerable members of

society that call into Open Door on a Friday morning for a breakfast,

warm drink or just to sit down and have a chat in a safe and non

judgmental environment. We have been blessed with a small team of

committed volunteers, and have been complimented on the friendly

and family atmosphere that prevails during the drop in. I would like to

take this opportunity to thank everyone at Christ Church for allowing

Open Door to use your beautiful Church building. Without your

support we would not be able to offer support to the vulnerable people

that so desperately need our help. We regularly serve 40 cooked

breakfasts, and provide packed lunch bags for those with no cooking

facilities of their own. My prayer is that one day there will be no need

for Open Door to provide this service but until that day comes could

you please hold us in your prayers, that God continues to bless us

with his provision and grace”.

God Bless you all.

Post-Christmas Blues

It’s a few weeks after Christmas, and all through the house

Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I’d nibbled, the trifle I taste

And the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!

When I walked to the store (less a walk, more a lumber)

I’d remember the marvellous meals I’d prepared:

The gravies, the sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese

And the way I’d never said “No thank you, please”

As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt

And prepared once again to do battle with dirt,

I said to myself, as only I can

“You can’t spend a Winter disguised as a man!”

So away with the last of the sour cream dip,

Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished

Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won’t have a cookie, not even a lick,

I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick,

I won’t have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie,

I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I’m hungry, I’m lonesome, and life is a bore,

But isn’t that what February’s for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot,

Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet.

FANTASY LEAGUE 2015-16 UPDATE

The HTM fantasy league is starting to take shape. At the time of going

to print, 4 - 4 The Saints lead the way, closely followed by Rosie’s Costa

Fortune. Bishops Boys, last year’s league winners, are starting to hit

form and climb the league, while The Heavenly Queens are playing like

a bunch of women. League coordinator Graham Foxley reminds

managers that team changes can be made at any time.
