PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Welcome Back Everyone! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Poff back to the Sherwood Team. She will be resuming her duties in the Grade 7/8 room. She is excited be back with our students! As the new year is a time for resolutions that help to improve our lives, I would like to review some of the things that have been shown to help students to be the most alert and attentive possible during learning time: 1. Sleep - We are more and more living in a sleep deprived world. Screen time is a major contributor. Please ensure students get enough sleep so they can be their academic and social best. 2. Food - We are what we eat! Although our brain is a small organ, it uses up to 30% of the nutrients we eat. What students eat has a huge impact on their readiness for learning. 3. Reading time - Studies have shown that reading at home (especially with parents) has a big impact on all areas of learning. 4. High Expectations - When parents consistently express the importance of education and communicate to the child that they expect them to succeed, the child does better in school. 5. Growth Mindset - This is based on the research of Carol Dweck. Knowing that our minds have the capacity to learn new things helps a student to keep trying when things get difficult. Avoiding ideas such as Im just not good at mathbut instead focusing on I can understand math when I work hardhelps students develop that resiliency to keep going when it is challenging. As we continue to work together for the success of your young people, these are ideas that will support what we do here at school. Just a reminder that bus cancellations are possible at this time of year. The RCJTC website (http:// www.onthebus.ca/en/index.asp) will keep you up to date should cancellations occur. Please be aware that the cancellation warning on the main page does not always mean all transportation is cancelled. Click on the additional details for specific information on the buses in the Madawaska Valley area. On days with bus cancellations we still welcome students to school. We adjust our daily schedule based on the number of students and staff who are able to make it in. Please also be aware that we try to get our students to get some fresh air each day at recess. Sometimes we are inside, but if the temperature (including windchill) is -21 or above, we will be outside. Please ensure students come to school appropriately dressed for the weather. Happy new year to everyone! I look forward to a great 2019. Please ensure students get enough sleep so they can be their academic and social best. 2. Food - We are what we eat! Although our brain is a small organ, it uses up to 30% of the nutrients we

eat. What students eat has a huge impact on their readiness for learning. 3. Reading time - Studies have shown that reading at home (especially with parents) has a big impact on

all areas of learning. 4. High Expectations - When parents consistently express the importance of education and communicate

to the child that they expect them to succeed, the child does better in school. 5. Growth Mindset - This is based on the research of Carol Dweck. Knowing that our minds have the

capacity to learn new things helps a student to keep trying when things get difficult. Avoiding ideas such as “I’m just not good at math” but instead focusing on “I can understand math when I work hard” helps students develop that resiliency to keep going when it is challenging.

As we continue to work together for the success of your young people, these are ideas that will support what we do here at school. With the winter driving comes the need for cancellations and delays to our routes from time to time. With this in mind, the RCJTC now provides information on school bus delays and/or cancellations via 6 different formats for your con-venience.

INCLEMENT WEATHER/SNOW DAYS Even when transportation is cancelled for the day, schools may remain open. Parents who choose to transport their children to and from school are still able to do so. If you choose to bring your child/children into school, you will be responsible for their return home after school. Please sign up:

www.onthebus.ca To get up to date info on your child’s bus status.

SAFE ARRIVAL Parents are reminded to please call the school before 9:00 a.m. if their child will be absent from school that day. If the absence is known ahead of time, please write a note to the class-room teacher indicating this and the reason for the absence or call the school. As part of the Safe Arrival Program, the school is obligated to call the student’s parents if the absence is not reported to the office.

PLAN AHEAD! That’s our best advice if you intend to change the dismissal arrangements of your child(ren). Sending in a note, writing in the agenda, calling in the morning (or the night before as our answering ma-chine is on 24/7) are some of the best ways to com-municate these changes as they are the least disrup-tive to the learning environment of all of our children. If last minute changes are unavoidable, please call with the updated arrangements before 2:00 pm. We strongly stress, to prevent class interruptions, that all students remain at school until the end of instruction time at 2:40 pm.

A BIG Thank You goes to Ms. Lindsay’s class for Volunteering and Ms. Tamosetis arranging an amazing Enchanted Forest (Scholastic Book Fair). Our library/classrooms received $1,005.10 in free books. We had a total $2,161 in sales. Great job!

Head to the RCDSB website, to find out more details about how the programming will be rolled out, and what it means for your child. There are two ways to register your child for kindergarten. Online Registration To register your child for JK/SK for September 2019 use our online system anytime by visiting http://www.rcdsb.on.ca/en/parents/registration-and-transfers.asp. In Person Visit the school for a registration package between 9:30 a.m and 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21 to Friday, February 1, 2019. Both registration methods require you to bring the following documents to your school. If you have questions about the registration process, contact the elementary school nearest you. Required Documentation (bring to the school): · Completed, signed and dated registration form (access the form online, complete it and bring it to school) · Proof of address (Utility bill or proof of ownership/ tenancy) · Proof of student’s birth date (birth certificate, passport, birth registration, citizenship card or statement of live birth) · Child’s immunization records (Students entering from outside Renfrew County should contact Renfrew County and
