The Delaware Office of Highway Safety wants to wish you and your families a Happy and Safe New Year! Be prepared for winter’s arrival. Our office wants to remind motorists to be cautious while driving in adverse weather. This month’s bundle includes winter driving season safety tips and a NHTSA guide about how to keep your vehicle maintained for icy conditions. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Take an active role in ensuring your employees know what to do in wintry weather conditions. Distribute the NHTSA Winter Driving Tips guide and have them in an accessible place. You can also download a PDF version by visiting: https://www.nhtsa.gov/winter-driving-tips. SLOW DOWN. ARRIVE ALIVE DE. Service your vehicle. Get the oil changed, headlights replaced if necessary, and check the tire pressure. Have the battery checked/tested now instead of when you’re starting your morning. Prepare for the worst - stock your vehicle with emergency supplies during the winter months. Some items to include are: snow shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, blankets, non-perishable snacks. Protect your children - remember, if they are under 13, they should be properly restrained in the back seat. Is your vehicle under a recall? Find out here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls. Know how to navigate around snow-plows. The road behind an active snow-plow is safer to drive on, but remember, the operator’s vision is limited. Give trucks room. Don’t follow or stop too closely. If you become stopped or stalled in wintry weather, keep these emergency safety tips in mind: - Stay with your car and don’t overexert yourself - Put bright markers on antenna or windows - Don’t run the car for long periods of time with the windows up or in an enclosed space as this can cause asphyxiation. Lastly, in the event of adverse weather conditions, it’s best if you can stay home. Even if you can drive well, not everyone else can.
