The Winds of Change Foundation constructed a dispensary in Sarima to serve the community of around 1,500 people in and around the Wind Farm. The facility was handed over to the County Government of Marsabit in June 2019. The facility includes a consultation room; a mother and child health room; maternity ward; washrooms; nurse’s house and a kitchen; battery and medicine storage facilities; incinerator; and a shaded waiting area. WoC constructed the facility and handed it over to the county government who are to stock and run it as they do with other county government dispensaries.

School Visitation Program WoC has been running a school visitation program since July 2018. In this program, WoC field program officers (FPOs), LTWP guest speakers and contractor representatives visit secondary schools in Laisamis Constituency to engage with students on the Wind Farm, the role of green energy in environmental conservation and career opportunities available in renewable energy. They also talk about their education and career paths with an aim of inspiring students towards wanting more for themselves. The visits are rotational and occur once a month during the school year.

A day in the life of… Name: Peter Ng’ang’a Designation: Head, Winds of Change Foundation Peter joined LTWP in July 2019 and takes over from Felix Rottmann as the head of Winds of Change Foundation. He shares his experience on the transition and settling into his new role. Being new to the LTWP family, how has the adjustment been? Honestly, at the frenetic pace at which LTWP operates, there is no time to adjust. As soon as you start adjusting, boom!, something else comes up. 1050 grey hairs later, I am finally getting the hang of it. What is your background and what are your interests? I have been a banker for over 20 years. My interests lie in law, traffic safety, teaching, the arts and I have been called a tree hugger. I also have a passing interest in golf, although my wife thinks it’s an addiction.

How well did your education and previous work experience prepare you for your new role? Education simply lays a foundation for one to have an open mind. Previous work experience came in handy because as a currency trader I was often pulled from many sides at once. That said, nothing quite prepared me for the breath-taking sights of the Farm, its people, the wind turbines, and of course the camel spiders. What do you enjoy most about your job? Being part of the solution to the challenges facing the communities in our catchment area. There is no cookie cutter solution. I love meeting & interacting with new communities and providing sustainable solutions – which is the bedrock of the WoC Foundation. Then there’s the camel spider, well…   What do you wish you could change/ do differently regarding your role if you could? I would have loved to be part of the team from the beginning of the Project.
