My education is from… …Catholic Schools. It’s that time of the year. We are going to celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week from January 27th thru February 1st. It’s always interesting to note my education résumé.

Kindergarten at Foster Park Elementary

1st grade at St Ethelreda, Chicago

2nd thru 8th at St Christopher, Midlothian

Marist High School, Chicago

Lewis University, Romeoville

1 summer class at St. Xavier, Chicago

5 years at University of St Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein So for my all of my educational years, one was spent in a public school. I am very thankful that my parents felt strongly about being sure my Catholic formation was going to be a major part of my education. And I am aware of so many families who simply cannot afford a Catholic education. Our Religious Education programs have developed over the years. Still, let me reflect on just what I have seen over my years before AND since my ordination. I have listened for many years about what the Church was like prior to the Second Vatican Council – how Catholic families were forced to be at Church and “Father” would note that they were not in “their pew,” which they rented regularly. Yes, pew rent existed. But the sense was the obligation to be at Mass each week. When I, myself, was growing up, my parents may have brought us to Mass out of obligation at first, but my brother and I had Church instilled in our souls as more than simply habit or obligatory. Today, I know that more lives are busier than ever before. More people work on the weekends than ever before. More sports are played on weekends than ever before – even in the mornings. And many don’t live close to the church in their neighborhood like so many once did. The need for God has not changed – for adults and children alike. I am grateful for all who have made St. Lawrence O’Toole a part of your children’s daily life. I continue to invite every family who attends our school to bring your children to Mass EVERY SUNDAY. It’s what we teach in the classroom and it’s what we are asked to practice EVERY WEEK. Even if your children are not Catholic, seeing their friends at Church gives them incentive to want to be here – and gives you an opportunity to grow WITH your children in the ways of faith.

Respectfully, Fr. Michael Novick

Living Stewardship January 27, 2013 ~ 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared…” (Nehemiah 8:10) Ezra’s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. However, He expects us to share our blessings with those who are in need.

KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME

Stand

At Sunday Mass, we sit, we kneel, we bow, and we stand. Every gesture, every action has its own meaning. We sit in a posture of receptivity. We kneel to express our reverent worship, as we do when we bow. And we stand for a couple of reasons. We stand at the Gospel out of respect for the Word of Jesus that comes to us. We stand at other parts of the Mass for a different reason. For example, we stand

for the Collect, the Prayer over the Offerings, the Prayer after Communion, the Creed, and for the Lord’s Prayer. When we stand during these prayers and the

Profession of Faith, we express our identity and dignity as adopted sons and daughters of God. Jesus says that we are no longer servants but his friends. And Paul says that we are no longer strangers and aliens but members of the household of God, truly sons and daughters in the Holy Spirit. In the Mass, we stand before God, because we belong to God.

How does tradition or custom impact how

often I attend Sunday Mass?

There will not be a Young at Heart gathering in January nor February due to your leaders soaking up the sun in Florida. However, you may feel free to gather your friends and go out to lunch on your own and think of us if you wish. We will meet again in March

for our usual lunch out. Please watch for a notice in the March bulletin.

O’TOOLE SCHOOL NEWS!! TODAY’S THE DAY!

Today, St. Lawrence O’Toole School begins its celebration of Catholic Schools Week. This is an annual, national, celebration of the contributions of Catholic schools to the community. A school planned Mass at 11:00 AM today officially launches a week of school and activities in honor of Catholic Schools Week. After Mass, you are invited to tour the school, enjoy all of the fantastic work in the school hallways, visit classrooms, talk to teachers and staff, and stop in at the book fair in the Sullivan Center until 1:30 PM.

Monday, we continue our week-long celebration with Student Appreciation Day, with each teacher will showing her appreciation to her students in some way. On Tuesday, there will be a pep rally organized by the athletic department, and students will wear their team shirt or other O’Toole spirit shirts. The students will honor their teachers on Wednesday, Teacher Appreciation Day. On Thursday, the whole school will enjoy a student council sponsored fun fair with lots of games, prizes, and candy. Unit Fun Day will end the week on Friday, with each unit sharing a snack and a movie together.

Celebrates Catholic Schools Week!!

CELEBRATION OF MASS DURING THE COLD AND FLU SEASON At this time, as well as any other, it is important to practice good hygiene and to remember good common sense. All of us would do well to remember that frequent cleansing of the hands, either with soap and water or with an alcohol based anti-bacterial solution, combats the spread or contraction of the flu. This need is especially important for those who minister Holy Communion during the celebration of the Eucharist. Those who feel ill should especially act responsibly. Refraining from taking Holy Communion from the Chalice, sharing the sign of peace with a simple nod of the head and the verbal exchange of Christ’s peace instead of shaking hands, and avoiding close contact with others will go a long way in helping prevent others from catching the same illness. So, please remember, that if someone doesn’t offer to shake hands, they are not being rude. They are just trying to practice good hygiene during this cold and flu season. While there are no plans at this point in the Archdiocese of Chicago to suspend or change either the Rite of Peace or Holy Communion from the Chalice, all Catholics should exercise prudence while participating in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2013 ~~ “Love Never Fails!” 1 Cor 13:8 Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you.

Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $ $30,074.00 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

IRA Charitable Gifts are BACK IN BUSINESS If you’re age 70½ or older, you may be able to take advantage of an important incentive for charitable giving. Congress has re-authorized for 2012 and 2013 the provision that allows individuals to make gifts of up to $100,000 per year from their IRA accounts to one or more charities, without first incurring income tax on the withdrawal. Your gift may also count as your annual required minimum distribution from your IRA. This means that you can direct up to $100,000 a year from your IRA to St. Lawrence O’Toole with no federal income tax liability. The IRA Rollover may provide you with an excellent opportunity to make a gift during your lifetime from an asset that would be subject to multiple levels of taxation if it remained in your taxable estate. Now, there are some details and restrictions:

You must be 70½ or older when you make your gift, and the gift must be made from an IRA – no other retirement plans (such as 401k, 403b or SEP accounts) qualify.

Your gift must come to us outright Although the distribution will be free from income tax, it will not generate an income tax

charitable deduction. There are other details which we’ll be happy to guide you through. Because Congress acted after the end of 2012 to pass this legislation, they have provided two ways you can make this type of gift and still have it count for 2012.

Option One is to make an IRA transfer by January 31, 2013 and elect for it to count as a charitable gift for 2012. The administrator of your IRA plan will make the actual distribution to us. We can provide a sample letter of instruction that you can send to your plan provider (see below for details). Option Two applies if you took a distribution from your IRA in December 2012. In that case, you are allowed to send us a check in the amount of your December 2012 IRA distribution by January 31, 2013. Then elect on your tax return for the December 2012 distribution to count as an IRA rollover.

Rich Goode, the Archdiocese’s Director of Planned Giving, can provide a sample letter of instruction that you can send to your IRA plan provider. For more information, please feel free to contact Rich @ [email protected] or 312/534-7848.

REMEMBER, 2012 Charitable IRA distributions can be made until January 31, 2013
