General Conference
In February 2019, hundreds of delegates will converge on St. Louis, MO, for a Special Called Session of the General Conference. They will seek a way forward on the issues surrounding LBGTQ persons.
Bishop David Bard has traveled the state conducting listening sessions related to this Special Called Session of

(Finding Our Way Forward) from Bishop David, as well as a toolbox of resources to help us
better understand the questions United Methodists face and the possible solutions.
As Bishop David stated recently, "While most of us like to think of the opinions we hold as well-supported, well-considered and well-argued, we would also do well to
acknowledge that in many of the most important things we think about, there is always room for growth and new
learning. Often well-considered, well-supported and well-argued opinions become so through shared conversation and dialogue. We should, then, be people who are open to new ideas, to new ways of looking at our lives and our faith, open to conversation and dialogue." In that spirit, Bishop David invites you into a continuing dialog.

Upcoming Adult Education Opportunities
A small group study connecting Christ and culture Matt Rawle is on a mission. He sees Christ all around him: in books, movies, TV shows, rock music, and he wants to share what he sees. In The Faith of a Mockingbird, based on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, pastor and author Matt Rawle uses Lee's beloved characters to explore
Christian faith, theology, and ethics.
Max Plank will lead this four-week study considering God's world and what it all means. This class will begin

Bible study: The Acts of the Apostles
The New Testament book of Acts is an exciting read, tracing the story of the Christian movement from the
resurrection of Jesus through the missionary work of the apostle Paul. As we strive to touch the lives of more people and to increase our health and vitality as a
congregation, this study will offer insight and inspiration. Join Pastor Joy and other leaders for an 8-week journey
with this important book within the Bible. Thursday evenings, 6:30-8 p.m. beginning January 17th.
Holy Contradictions: What’s Next for the
People Called United Methodists Ron Mourad will lead a series of conversations based on several essays from a book entitled Holy Contradictions.
Each essay was written with this question in mind: How might United Methodists bear witness to graceful and mutually respectful ways of living in the Wesleyan tradition amid
enduring disagreements about same-gender relationships and related church practices? The variety of authors offer
perspectives that both challenge and reinforce our ways of thinking. This group will gather Sunday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m., beginning Sunday, January 20th

Altar Flower Sign Up 2019
Altar flowers are a nice way to celebrate someone’s birthday, wedding, anniversary, remembering
or honor someone.
You will find a flower calendar on the board in the coatroom. Pick a day and put your name on it, fill out a form with the
needed information and return it to Liza Gray. You can leave it in Liza’s mailbox down in the office area.
If you would prefer to donate to the flower fund instead of listing something, call the church office and speak to Liza Gray 734-475-8119 and she will let you know what to do.

Soul Food Children's Mission Event Seeks
Food Donations & Meal Nominations
The Children's Mission Ministry Team is excited for the second year of its "Soul Food" community service event scheduled for
Sunday, Jan. 13th from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
The idea is for members of the congregation to nominate a person or family in the community to receive a surprise,
anonymous meal of baked ziti, salad, rolls, and cookies that the children will make and hand-deliver. To help us pull this off, we are asking for the congregation's support of food item
donations and nominees for meal recipients.

Christmas is Not “Your” Birthday
Thank you to everyone to donated items to our Christmas collection for Faith in Action! We collected 30 brownie/cookie
mixes and 20 gift cards to local fast food restaurants. The families who will receive these items
will have a lot of fun using them!

When: January 13th 2:30-5:30 p.m. Where: Grams Hall Who: All interested Middle School and High School Youth What: One of the issues of concern both in M.S. and H.S. is that of bullying. This training will afford a skill set through the use of role play and discussion using situations students face in any given week. We have the opportunity to own our identity as non violent people in the vein of Jesus Christ,
Martin Luther King Jr, and Ghandi.

8th Annual Stamp Camp
Join us for a morning of fun and friendship and exploring your creative side to make cards for your family and friends
9:30 am-12:30 p.m. in Calkins Hall, First United Methodist Church, 120 S. State St, Ann Arbor. No experience necessary!
You will make six greeting cards (all birthday, but other word options will be available). $30 fee includes
all supplies needed and refreshments.
The net income from this event will benefit Justice For Our Neighbors. JFON Michigan offers legal services and is a safe haven for all immigrants, regardless of race or religion.
Their network of immigration attorneys, volunteers and staff work hard to protect the human rights of our immigrant community in many ways including limited legal representation and help with various applications. They offer services related to keeping families together, fostering relationships within families,
