Happy Spring!
I am happy to announce this month that the board has
voted to send three members to the ASPE Conven-
tion & Expo that is happening September 30 -
October 3rd in Atlanta, GA. As I’ve written before
this is a great opportunity to learn from top present-
ers on issues currently affecting plumbing design in
addition you will get access to the largest pluming
product tradeshow. It’s a can’t pass up opportunity!
There are three categories of trips we will be giving
away: (1) trip specifically for a Woman of ASPE
member, (1) trip for a first timer and (1) trip to
anyone else that is interested.
The Women of ASPE Leadership Forum is Septem-
ber 28th and is an event that will bring together wom-
en in the field of plumbing design where you have
the opportunity to network with your peers, learn
about leadership development and how to apply it
toward your professional growth. I encourage mem-
bers of all ages to consider attending as you will def-
initely get more than you could expect out of this
forum.
If you are interested in attending please email your
contact information to [email protected] and indicate
if you are interested in the Women of ASPE Forum
or are a first time attendee. There are no restrictions
on who can apply and I hope you seriously consider
taking advantage of this opportunity! This is our
way of giving back to you as members!
The deadline for signing up is April 27th – no ex-
ceptions! The winners will be drawn at random and will be
notified with the details immediately on how and
when to register. Any questions can be sent to jim-
Nominations are now open for the 2018-19 ASPE
Wisconsin Board of Directors. All members are
encouraged to run for the board, no experience is
needed. There is a position for every experience lev-
el. If you are interested in running for the BOD
please email your contact information and position
you’re interested in to Bruce Weiss
[email protected]. Nominations must be turned
in by April 27 and voting will occur at our May
meeting.
Save The Date: This year’s golf outing will be
August 16 at the Broadlands. Sign up will be sent
out in July.

Vice-President, Technical By Aaron Bock, PE
Access to clean water is one of the first things that any
developing community needs to survive. Over 844 million
people around the world do not have access to clean water
and contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause
over half a million deaths every year. As much as 80 per-
cent of all illnesses in developing countries are attributed
to poor water quality and sanitation.
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is an international
group of engineers—including many university student
chapters—that volunteer their time, talents, and resources
to infrastructure projects in developing countries. Projects
that provide clean water access to communities in need are
some of the most common ones they take on. Our own
local chapters in Madison and on the UW engineering
campus are involved in three such projects in Guatemala,
Ecuador, and Uganda. Despite a strong need for a such a
basic resource, there are still relatively few plumbing en-
gineers practicing right now and far fewer college curricu-
lums focused on plumbing engineering—UW-Madison is
no exception.
Last year, I became involved with EWB after they pre-
sented their current projects at one of our ASPE meetings.
One of the student chapter’s professional mentors cited a
general need for knowledge on plumbing system design
and construction and asked if I could share my expertise
with the group. In the months that followed, I coordinated
a joint effort with EWB and two of my industry contacts,
Jerry Thompson of Spears Manufacturing and Kevin
Masterson of NAMI, to develop educational sessions fo-
cusing on plumbing system design and construction.
On February 6, I gave a 75-minute presentation to this
student group on plumbing design concepts that I felt
were relevant to their project, with a strong focus on safe-
ty, system sanitation, and protecting the health of the pub-
lic. (I also promoted careers in the plumbing design in-
dustry while I had the floor.) The following Saturday,
Jerry and Kevin hosted the group in a hands-on piping
construction session at the NAMI fabrication shop. The
students learned about proper pipe joining and fabrication
and then put the lessons into practice in the shop. When
the students visit their project sites this summer to help
with construction, they will practice what they learned
and share their knowledge with the locals who will build,
maintain, and own these systems.
While EWB focuses on participation from engineers, they
welcome involvement from anyone who wants to make a
difference in these communities. For more information
about EWB and their efforts, please visit the sites below
or contact me.

Finally, special thanks to Jerry and Kevin for volunteer-
ing their time and resources for this great effort.

SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER - PLUMBING
From the
Vice-President, Legislative By TJ Smith, P.E.
Hello ASPE Members,
I was recently asked a question from another ASPE
member that I thought would be beneficial to write a
news article about. His question was in regards to
contacting the DSPS Designer Section and request a
consideration for a plumbing systems compliance
statement.
I have included the main points to his email below
and would like this conversation to continue in the
following ASPE meetings. I think it is important for
all members to talk about the advantages/
disadvantages of this.
Email from ASPE Member:
Form SBD-9720 is the Building and HVAC compli-
ance statement for the State of Wisconsin. This form
is required to be filled out by Architects and HVAC
design professionals at the completion of a project.
The purpose of the form is for the building and
HVAC designer of record to sign off stating that
based on their on-site observation, the construction
has been completed in substantial compliance with
the approved plans and specifications.
Currently, there is no requirement for the plumbing
design professional that stamped and signed the con-
struction documents to substantiate to the building
owner and to the state that the installation met the
design intent. The plumbing system can be altered
during construction without the designer’s
knowledge that may create health and safety issues
following occupancy.
Adding plumbing references into the compliance
statement brings plumbing systems to the same level
of DSPS enforcement as the Building and HVAC
systems.
Reasoning to add Plumbing to SBD-9720:
1. Documents the plumbing design professional in a
manner consistent with the building and HVAC
systems.
2. Documents “substantial compliance” with the
approved documents.
3. Would require acknowledgement of an on-site
field observation visit of the plumbing installa-
tion by the design professional.
4. Allows any non-compliant items to be noted.
5. Allows a recorded means and method for the de-
sign professional to withdraw from a project.

Happy April!
Last month we got together for an awesome net-
working event at Vitense Golflands in Madison.
This was a great opportunity to get to know other
ASPE members, learn from each other, and have
a fun time! Thanks to Rich Davison at Soderholm
& Associates for sponsoring this awesome event!
Especially in the plumbing engineering field,
building a strong network of colleagues and peers
is important to success. The goal of events like
this is to provide opportunities to network with
peers in a fun and relaxed setting. There will be
lots of great events coming up that we’d love to
see you at! Stay tuned for more information on
the Brewer’s game and the annual golf outing this
summer.

Our membership is going strong in April with many
of you (17) renewing your membership again. Thank
you for continuing to be part of this great organiza-
tion. As you are already aware- your membership
gives you the edge in your business by helping to
network with both fellow engineers as well as associ-
ates that can assist you in finding answers to prob-
lems and creating solutions to the many challenges
that you face.
Happy Birthday Wisconsin ASPE members!

This month in April – it would be wonderful to have
some beautiful spring like weather. The poster be-
low is from the national society office and can be
used to help in our education efforts to bring aware-
ness of the water cycle to schools (early education)-
and to help us talk to students about why engineering
is so important and an exciting career path to consid-
er.
Please feel free to contact myself or any board mem-
ber if you are interested in presenting to a local
school or class to help in this effort. ASPE offers a
short presentation and a fun engineering activity for
kids to help them understand.
