Tu B’Shevat is a holiday in the middle of the Jewish month of Shevat, the 15th day of the month is the NewYear of Trees. This year it will be celebrated on February 11, 2017.

The Bible expresses a great reverencefor fruit trees as symbols of God's bountyand beneficence. Special laws were formulated to protect fruit trees in timesof war and ensure that the produce oftrees would not be picked until the trees

were mature enough and tithes were given from them. In order to calculate the age of trees, both for determining when they could beharvested and when they were to be tithed for the Temple, the Talmudic Rabbis established the 15th day (Tu) of the month of Shevat as the official "birthday" of trees.

With the increased concern for the environment in recent years,Tu B’Shevat has taken on an additional meaning as a day on whichwe can express and act on their concern for the ecological well-being of the world in which we live. This has led to the rediscovery of the mystical Tu B’Shevat seder, now transformedinto a celebration of God's bounty and the environment.

In medieval times, kabbalists ( Jewish mystics) gave Tu B’Shevatgreater spiritual significance. According to Lurianic Kabbalah, allphysical forms—including human beings—hide within them aspark of the Divine Presence. This is similar to some kinds of fruitsor nuts, which hide within them seeds of new life and potentialgrowth. In Jewish mysticism, human actions can release thesesparks and help increase God's presence in the world. On TuB’Shevat, the kabbalists would eat certain fruits associated withthe land of Israel as a symbolic way of releasing these divine sparks.

There is an ancient midrash (rabbinic teaching) that states,"When God led Adam around the Garden of Eden, God said,'Look at My works. See how beautiful they are, how excellent! Foryour sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil or destroy My world--for if you do, there will be no one to repair itafter you'" (Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7.13). For environmentalists, TuB’Shevat is an ancient and authentic Jewish connection to contemporary ecological issues. The holiday is viewed as an appropriate occasion to educate about our tradition's advocacy ofresponsible stewardship of God's creation, manifested in ecological activism. Tu B’Shevat is an opportunity to raise awareness about and to care for the environment through theteaching of Jewish sources celebrating nature. It is also a day tofocus on the environmental sensitivity of the Jewish tradition byplanting trees.

When Zionist pioneers began returning to the land of Israel inthe late 19th century, Tu B’Shevat became an opportunity for theseardent agrarians to celebrate the bounty of a restored ecology inIsrael. In ancient times, the land of Israel was once fertile and wellforested. Over centuries of repeated conquest, destructions, anddesertification, Israel was denuded of trees. The early Zionistsseized upon Tu B’Shevat as an opportunity to celebrate their tree-planting efforts to restore the ecology of ancient Israel and as asymbol of renewed growth and flowering of the Jewish peoplereturning to their ancestral homeland.

PRESIDENT MIRIAM RUBEBy special invitation from students, I

attend religious all girls' performances. Each performance begins with tehillim(Psalms) and prayers for the sick.

What a meaningful lesson our RabbiGoldenholz reiterated in his Shabbatmessage. We are all responsible one forthe other part of a larger community.Always remembering those withgreater needs and to do so out loud inthe presence of others.

The beginning of the secular year is one such occasion. I havefamily and friends who usher in the secular year with greatpageantry and traditions thinking of their needs and their families.Twelve grapes so carefully placed in sparkling white wine gobletsonly by dearest friends. The obligatory fireworks to fascinate thechildren. Then, there are those content to remain away from thefanfare relishing the moments with their family and loved ones.Another year, keeping in mind all our blessings.

We turn the corner into 2017. Commit to plant a tree in Israelfor Tu b'Shevat, join a group and sponsor a kiddish to celebratelife, dedicate a talit in memory of a loved one or attend any of ourmany events. You are the reason we are a community. Centuriesof setting us apart have created for us the opportunity to knowthat strength is in our identity. Identify with the community andidentify as an individual who contributes to that community.

At Temple Sinai, we find those who revel in the ceremony andjoin every minyan or Shabbat service they can attend. Then, thereare those who attend when in need of spiritual light. Whetheryou attend regularly or visit occasionally, we are all one community.

Am yisrael chai. Come sing with us. Come pray with us. Aboveall, come join our chevrusa.

Regards,Miriam

In modern times, Tu B’Shevat continues to be an opportunityfor planting trees--in Israel and elsewhere, wherever Jews live. Many American and European Jews observe Tu B’Shevat by contributing money to the Jewish National Fund, an organizationdevoted to reforesting Israel.

A Daycare, a NurserySchool, a Preschool or

an Early LearningCenter?

There are so many names for placeswhere children can spend their earlyyears. Is there really a difference? Yes,

most definitely. “Daycares” are generally nurseries offering essentially babysit-

ting. Little emphasis is placed on early childhood education andthe major purpose is to have an adult supervise the child. Whilethere may be toys, books, or videos for the child to pass the time, there is little formal or structured education and most teachers donot have extensive training in the field.

A “Nursery School” and a “Preschool” are educational establish-ments or learning spaces offering some early childhood educationto children between the ages of three and five. They may be privately operated or government run, and the costs may be subsidized. Educational standards do vary and teacher qualifica-tions are minimal.

An Early Learning Center or Early Childhood Education Center is a facility with an emphasis on providing the child with aproper educational foundation. Accreditation by a national organization is often a standard of accomplishment indicatinglower-than-mandated teacher-child ratios and higher-than-mandated teacher and facility qualifications.

A high quality, accredited Early Childhood Education Center, such as our Kasselman School, is extremely important for the bestpossible development of the child. Countless studies have demonstrated that the high quality of experiences and relationships in the first three years of a child’s life has a deep andlasting impact on how the child’s brain develops. The richer theenvironment, the greater the learning. While all childcare facilities in Florida are inspected and licensed by the State andother safety inspectors, no facility is required to hold an accreditation. Only the most accomplished and validated facilities can be accredited.

Another important reason to choose an accredited early learning center is the quality and expertise of the staff. Here atthe Kasselman School, we employ teachers who share our vision, values, love for children, and dedication to high-quality education. In an accredited learning center, more teachers must have a higherlevel of early childhood education or must be working toward theirdegrees as early childhood educators. This means more training, more education, and more practical experience. Teachers should beencouraged to remain in the school, be offered training for growthand development as educators, and they should be appreciated forwhat they bring to the center. Also, lower teacher-student ratiosare important characteristics of a quality early learning school.

Although, there are different types of accreditations, for morethan 25 years, families have relied on the National Association forthe Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) accreditation to ensure the quality of education and care provided in programs foryoung children. A NAEYC accredited school has lower teacher-student ratios than required by the State and NAEYC requiresmuch more in the educational facility than mandated by the

KASSELMAN SCHOOL NEWSDonna Anton, Director

government. Simply stated, a NAEYC accreditation is the highest accomplishment for any Early Childhood EducationCenter.

Daycare Centers, Nursery Schools, and unaccredited EarlyLearning Centers are generally cheaper than an accredited EarlyChildhood Education Center. But like anything else, you getwhat you pay for. When the initial development and educationalfoundation of your child is so important, choosing a high quality accredited Early Childhood Education Center is so im-portant.

So, let me say to all of our Kasselman School parents: Congratulations! You have chosen a program for your child thatis accredited by the National Association for the Education ofYoung Children, the most widely recognized accreditation system for early childhood programs. Your child is receiving thevery best education from the best educators in a first-class facility. We are honored that you have chosen our KasselmanSchool and we pledge to provide an outstanding foundation forall of our children.

On Friday, January 6th our students will beparticipating and conducting our KISS Shabbat service. They look forward to beingon the bima and welcoming Shabbat with theirsweet voices singing Shabbat songs with Alejandra. With the vegetarian pot luck din-ner prior to services, there is a real feeling ofwarmth and family as we come together to celebrate Shabbat. There is a special feeling of

“ruach” and we invite everyone to join us at 6:15 P.M. for the dinnerand at 7:00 P.M. for Shabbat services. It will make you smile.

In February in Religious School we will celebrate the holiday ofTu’B’Shevat by doing some gardening and by tasting the wonderful foods that come from trees. Tu B’Shevat is a holiday ofnature. It is the New Year of the Trees. It reminds us that we liveoff the gift of the earth’s resources; that some of those resourcesare renewable and some are not. Tu B’Shevat reminds us that weare not just consumers of the earth’s abundance, but we are thecaretakers of the earth and its produce. The students will talk abouttheir role in not harming the earth. They will learn that trees giveus oxygen and wood, shade, fruits, forests, paper, landscapes andalmonds. We could no more live on this earth without trees thanwe could live without sunshine and water. And since the power toplant and destroy trees is in our hands, Judaism gives us a beautiful holiday to celebrate them. So please take some time to gooutdoors on the holiday of TuB’Shevat and enjoy nature and plantsomething with your children.

Shalom,Karen

SOCIAL ACTIONLast Share-a-Meal of 2016

I used to dream that we would not have enough volunteers for the end of the year Share-a-Meal and this year it almost came true!We barely made it and that was without doing anything with toiletry kits. Those that braved the late date of Dec. 18 were: MiriamRube and Jacob and Reuben Latorre; Mark and Lois Nonkin; Paula and Steve Platt with bread and donuts in hand; Kerry Sisselman; Paula Greene; Diane Snyder; Judy Wiener and one of our newest members Zully Paz. Usually people show up who didnot rsvp, but not this time. We got our sandwiches made and we were lucky that the church that we work with was planning a bigholiday meal. Those we served sat at the tables with beautiful red and white cloths with poinsettia centerpieces. We brought candycanes and cookies and the church served a beautiful turkey or fish meal. The room was full and we were very busy serving at least90 hungry people.

At times, it is a struggleto make a minyan. Pleasejoin us when you can. Itwould be a mitzvah andgreatly appreciated.

*Bagels and coffee areprovided after the morning service.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR DAILY MINYANMonday - Friday 8:15 a.m.* | Monday - Thursday 5:30 p.m.
