ICBC is paving the way for the introduction of Enhanced Care coverage next year when BC drivers will see average savings of 20 on their full basic and optional vehicle insurance
As part of these savings ICBC will apply to the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) tomorrow (December 15 2020) for its largest basic rate decrease in more than 40 years ndash a de-crease of 15 The rate application will cover the next two years rather than the typical one-year duration which will help provide greater rate stability
Read the full announcement via the BC governments news re-
lease and backgrounder
Because Enhanced Care coverage will remove the adversarial approach of suing drivers and the hundreds of millions of dollars going towards lawyers and legal fees the overall costs of our insurance system will reduce dramatically We forecast cost savings at more than $15 billion in the first full year of Enhanced Care coverage These savings will be passed on to British Columbians in the form of lower insurance rates an average saving of $400 per policy It also ensures more money goes directly to the injured customer rather
than to lawyerrsquos contingency fees and expert reports
AT FAULT IN A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH
Lauren 29 was driving home one night on Vancouver Island and swerved to avoid hitting a deer She lost control of her car and crashed into an embankment Her spinal cord injury resulted in a permanent disability and she was unable to continue to work
In todayrsquos system Laurenrsquos accident benefits cover her care and recovery costs up to $300000 Because it was a single vehicle accident she is considered at fault for the crash and has no one to sue for additional compensation But she now needs long-term care and treatment and todayrsquos $300000 limit wonrsquot be enough to care for her over her lifetime In fact it may run out after only a few years
Under the new Enhanced Care coverage the overall maximum for medical care and recovery expenses is 24 times the amount it is today enough to care for her over her lifetime Lauren will also receive 90 per cent of her net income and permanent impairment compensation up to $250000 depending on the severity of her permanent disability Lauren can be assured shersquoll be able to get the care and financial support she needs for as long as she needs it
BCs Land Owner Transparency Registry now in
force what you need to know
BCs new Land Owner Transparency Act (LOTA) came into force on November 30 2020
For transactions set to close on November 30 or later when the title change is registered in the land titles office the transferee must file a transparency declaration disclosing interest holders
This declaration records indirect ownership of interests in land such as corporations trustees and partnerships as required by the BC Land Owner Transparency Act and Land Owner Trans-parency Regulations
The act ensures interest holders who have an indirect ownership in the land are disclosed and this information is stored in the Land Owner Transparency Registry (LOTR) The registry will be searchable as of April 30 2021
Home buyers should get legal advice about the requirements of LOTA early on so therersquos time for the appropriate information to be gathered and filed
If the buyer is a corporation partnership or trust not a resident of Canada has beneficial own-ers or shareholders outside of Canada this period could take up to one month
Itrsquos important to plan ahead to allow legal professionals to complete the transparency declara-tion and determine if a transparency report must be filed

Sample forms are available on wwwlandtransparencyca
