January’s Principal’s Message To all members of our school community, Welcome back and happy 2020! I hope that you all had a great break and that you are well rested and ready for the mad dash to exams. I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who participat- ed in the many fundraising and charity events organized by our staff and students in December. I am very proud that we, as a group, are able to give so much back to our community and show so much support for those in need. Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed and that your compassion makes a huge difference to a lot of people. January is always a very busy month that can be quite stress- ful for students, parents, and teachers. Please know that we have many supports in place to help deal with this stress. Guidance, the Teen Health Center, or the Office are just three of the many places that you can go if you are feeling overwhelmed. Enclosed in this newsletter is a copy of the exam schedule. Please check it carefully and make sure you know when you are writing. Before we know it, exams will be over and second semester will be in full swing. Please take a few minutes to look forward at your second semester schedules and make sure that you know what courses you are registered for. This can be done on PowerSchool. If you have questions about possibly chang- ing a course or what courses you need to graduate, you should book an appointment with someone in guidance as soon as possible. I hope that you all have a great month! Cheers, Matt O’Toole, Principal Pictured at right are 2019-2020 Co- Presidents Hannah Warren and Ethan Mathias Hey Nighthawks! Hey Nighthawks!

We want to say thank you for making the month of December such a success! It was a busy month for sure but we made it to the new decade! Our Environment Committee held a Tropical Fruit Salad sale to raise money for Bee City organization which was a hit! Community Relations Committee helped students get involved in the Ugly Christmas Sweater Run which was hosted by the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The Spirit Committee coordinated a fan-tastic spirit week and many people got involved which was awe-some! In addition, the Grads and International Buddies Committees held Christmas parties to celebrate before the holiday break. On another note, we would like to say a HUGE thank you to all stu-dents and staff that participated in any way during the New Glas-gow Christmas Parade! Northumberland once again received the “Best School Spirit” award! Awesome job to everyone that was there, it keeps getting better every year and can’t wait for the next one in the new year. We wrapped up the month by having an activ-ities afternoon before the holiday break which included a basketball game between the varsity school teams and our Unified Sport

team.

We hope everyone had a great break for the holidays and wish everyone a great start to the 2020’s. Although January tends to be a quieter month leading up to exams, we can’t wait for what’s

Conflicts – 26 students will write an exam during this time.

In the Event of a Storm Day…

In the event of a storm day, all exams will move ahead one day. For example, if there is a storm day on Tuesday, those exams will move to Wednesday, and Wednesday’s will move to Thursday and so on. In the unlikely event that we will have two storm days in a row, all exams will simply move ahead two days.

Before holiday break, Ms. MacDonald’s Citizenship Class completed ser-vice work as a requirement for the course. Students choose, researched, planned and prepared different projects and broke into groups to initiate action. A Bake Sale raising $87.00 for The Tearmann House was initiated by Mya Currie, Nolan Fraser, Maddie Long, Rory MacDonald, Lucia Mason, Jasmine Pellerine and Zoe Wilson. Marcus Coady, Kaiden Hoffer-Haywood, Caden MacDonald, Cejay MacKenzie, Brady Martin, Joe Walsh and Ben Strickland collected goods for the SPCA. A large amount of toys were collected for Toy Drive that was initiated by Katie Ward, Sommer Marsh, with some help from Dante Hamilton-Pelley and Braden Janes.
