What are you thankful for? Being thankful is something I try to prac"ce every day, but this "me of year it’s top of mind for most of us. With even just a li/le reflec"on, we should realize what’s important to our lives. At the top of my list:

1. My family which includes six beau"ful grandchildren, my faith and good health. Due to this last year of having numerous family members who are experiencing major illnesses; I believe we can’t take our good health lightly and we must have compassion for those who are suffering.

2. Freedom, being an American—our na"on may be divided on many issues and may not be perfect, but what place is? I believe the area that we must be unit-ed is in support of our military, police, firefighters and rescue teams. They are our true heroes.

3. Free enterprise and the entrepreneurial spirit—Individuals who take risk and demonstrate innova-"on deserve the credit for drama"cally improving our economy. It’s great to see how Castle Rock and Colorado has bounced back from the recession. If there is a silver lining to hard economic "mes it’s a greater apprecia"on when things are going well. During our holiday season it was won-derful to see the ac"vity throughout Castle Rock, I hope that ac"vity turns into financial success for our local businesses.

4. Business people throughout Douglas County—it’s our pleasure at the Chamber to work closely with these professionals every single day. I truly believe it’s proven "me and "me again those who give of themselves will receive a general sense of prosperity and contentment in their future.

5. Chamber and community volunteers—Similar to the item above, we get to work a long side with the best and brightest people in our community and they exemplify selfless and outstanding lead-ership. We see them contribute their knowledge and skills to our community by providing their guidance to Chamber programs and local events. Thank you all.

6. Chamber staff—As I begin my 17th year as the Castle Rock Chamber’s CEO, this is the strongest group of dedicated and knowledgeable individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’m thankful to work with them all.

7. Last but not least, I’m thankful for you and your decision to be a part of our business community and your investment in your Chamber.

I wish you and your family a blessed and prosperous New Year.

Chamber Selected To Partner on Statewide Worksite Wellness Initiative Douglas County Employers Receive Free Worksite Wellness Advising and Funding

Health Links announces funding expansion for Douglas County

December 15, 2014 – Health Links™ has launched a campaign to bring worksite wellness to Douglas County businesses. Free technical advising and resources are available to companies of all sizes. Addi"onally, a total of $100,000 has been allocated to assist small busi-nesses (<50 employees) with seed funding. Health Links™, a statewide public health ini"a"ve, has partnered with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce and Tri-County Health Department to form a coali"on of local employers. The group meets monthly at the Chamber to learn about wellness tools and programs that are available to local employers. “We believe that working together around a common vision will create the most change in our community.” Says Pam Ridler, President and CEO of the Chamber. “We are excited to work with Health LinksTM because their program is a valuable resource to help businesses keep their employees healthy, increasing their produc-"vity and helping with their bo/om line. This is truly a partnership and Castle Rock is the beneficiary.” The Chamber’s worksite wellness coali"on welcomes employers from all sectors. The group’s founding em-ployers include Flying Horse Catering, My Wed-ding.com, Douglas County Libraries, St. Francis of Assisi Church, and Rockyard American Grill. Employers of all sizes are invited to register with Health Links™. The major components of the program include free technical advising and Healthy Business Cer"fica-"on. Small businesses (<50 employees) are also eligi-ble for seed funding up to $1,000 to help them kick-start an employee wellness program. Businesses that already have a wellness and safety pro-gram are invited to apply for Healthy Business Cer"fi-ca"on which allows them to get recognized as a cham-pion of wellness in their community. “We have learned through local focus groups that busi-ness owners care about the health of their employees,” reports Michele Haugh, Worksite Wellness Coordinator for Tri-County Health Department. “Employers see first-hand the correla"on between employee wellness and produc"vity. However, most feel powerless, believing a worksite wellness program would be cost prohibi-"ve.” According to Michele, however, “Employers who register with Health Links and par"cipate in the Cham-ber’s worksite wellness coali"on are pleasantly

surprised when they learn how easy and affordable a worksite wellness program can be.” You can join Health Links today by visi"ng healthlinks-colorado.org. To get involved with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce’s worksite wellness coali"on, contact either Pam Ridler at the Chamber: [email protected] (303-688-4597) or Michele Haugh at Tri-County Health Department: [email protected] (720-200-1518).

# # # Health Links™ is a nonprofit ini"a"ve from the Center

for Worker Health and Environment, within the Colora-do School of Public Health, a collabora"on of the Uni-versity of Colorado, Colorado State University and the

University of Northern Colorado. Health Links™ is made possible through a start-up grant from Pinnacol Assurance and funding from the Centers for Disease

Control and Preven"on (CDC), the Na"onal Ins"tute for Occupa"onal Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Hollis

Family Trust.

For the last seventeen years, I have worked as a Real Estate Assistant in the community alongside my husband, Tom Calhoun, who is a realtor with RE/MAX Alliance.

I joined the Chamber in June of 2011 and became an Ambassador in February of 2012.

Joining the Chamber has proven to be the best way to get involved in the community. By becoming a member of the Chamber, I have greatly broadened my friendships and business connec-"ons. I have met so many wonderful people who live and work in this beau-"ful town and I am honored to serve the residents.

The Castle Rock Chamber has so many dedicated Ambassadors, that being awarded Ambassador of the Year is amazing. I am blessed to have this recogni"on and thank you to the Chamber for this opportunity! When I’m not assis"ng Tom with Real Estate or par"cipa"ng as an Ambassador, "me with family and friends is a priority. When the opportunity arises, I enjoy dancing, playing pi-ano, walking our 3 chihuahuas, hiking and traveling.

Thank you Melanie, for all you do to support and promote the Castle Rock Chamber. We greatly appreciate and applaud your

outstanding efforts!

Bre/ Turner is a Colorado na"ve who enjoys "me with family, travel, golf, motorcycles and community events. He has lived in Castle Rock for 19 yrs along with his wife Sue who is also ac"ve in their prin"ng, promo"onal products and custom apparel business, “180° Branding.” Both Bre/ and Sue had been plan-ning to move to a warmer climate with Palm Trees where there’s no snow, however over the last 6 years as their business rela"onships have been turning into friendships, they realized just how warm the people of Castle Rock and the surrounding communi"es are so they’ve decided to stay and con"nue to build their business here and vaca"on in warmer areas when pos-sible. A]er all, the weather in Colorado is fairly nice

throughout the year with excep"on of a few weeks in the winter. Bre/ and his wife joined the Castle Rock Chamber shortly a]er star"ng their promo"onal products and custom t-shirt business back in 2008 and now, they provide prin"ng services (brochure’s, le/er head, business cards, etc.), window graphics, trophies and awards, name tags and more in addi"on to their promo-"onal products and custom apparel. Our clients range from banks, hospitals, medical prac"ces, automo"ve, health organiza"ons, farm and ranch, clubs, non-profit, bands, sports teams, gyms, small businesses just star"ng up and much more. No job is too big. For clients who hold marke"ng mee"ngs on a regular basis, the Turner’s have actually been par"cipa"ng in these mee"ng’s which allows them to act as an addi"on to the staff without being an addi"on to the payroll to assist first hand with ideas and planning. They’ve even taken on project management roles for clients during marke"ng campaigns and large projects. This frees up the mar-ke"ng managers "me so they can concentrate on other important tasks while the Turner’s track and report on the status throughout the order process up to receipt of the product. Normally a marke"ng firm would charge for all this "me PLUS add their commission to the price of the products but the Turner’s earn their income from the sale of the products while saving their clients a lot of money by taking the "me to research quality products at the best price and due to their efforts during the ideas and planning stages. We don’t just sell prod-ucts, we provide solu"ons. For our clients who have ongoing marke"ng cam-paigns, we become an extension to their team without becoming an extension to their payroll. This allows us to really get to know our clients and who their customers are so we can be more effec"ve as they realize a higher ROI (return on investment). Bre/ is also ac"ve in the Castle Rock Chamber as an Ambassador and has re-ceived a few “Ambassador of the Month” awards for volunteering his "me to work at chamber events, mentoring new business members, a/ending ribbon cu^ngs and helping out where needed. Bre/ likes to meet new business mem-bers who usually become friends over a short "me. There really are no strangers within the Castle Rock Chamber. And the ambassadors program has a sense of camaraderie and almost family. “There isn’t much I wouldn’t do for these people as we all watch out for each other.”

Thank you BreK, for all you do to support and promote the Chamber!

Local Entrepreneurs Help YEA! Students with Idea Genera*on

“The YEA! program is just what our country needs, and it’s excing that it has been implemented in Douglas County. I am

happy to support this program and all of the opportunies it offers our local youth.”

James Calhoun, Principal, Castle View High School In October, students from in the Young Entrepreneurs Acade-my, Class of 2015, began their eight-month journey to busi-ness ownership. These future CEOs are members of a groundbreaking program that teaches students from all walks of life how to make a job,-not take a job, by star"ng their own business. In addi"on to lessons inside the classroom, YEA! introduces them to all types of areas of business through field trips, guest lectures, pairing them with business mentors, coaching them through an investor pitch compe""on and working with them through the launch of their own real busi-ness. YEA students have been on two field trips, so far. The first trip was to the future site of the Castle Rock Zip Line and Aeri-al Tours, under construc"on by Ty Seufer, entrepreneur and owner of a similar adventure experience in Canon City. By engaging in a hands-on approach to learning, the students saw what it takes to start a recrea"onal/entertainment busi-ness and learned about the tremendous amount of commit-ment that is required before a business can take shape. A second field trip took students to Chick-fil-A, in Castle Rock, where students learned from Joe Weber, Owner/Operator, about the company’s founding and business model. “It is ‘cool’ field trips, like these that makes YEA! the unique experi-ence that it is. It takes experien"al, project-based learning to a whole new level!” said Buchan.

YEA! kicked off its third year with the help of instructor Joan Pra/, who has been working with YEA! students since the 2012 Colorado launch of the program in Douglas County. Joan brings her enthusiasm for achieving business success to her role as Instructor of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy. “Joan’s dedica"on to the students and her entrepreneurial spirit makes her a great role model for YEA! students," says Carrie Buchan, program manager. A successful veteran in the real estate industry, Joan’s tenacity, a/en"on to detail and personal service earned her the 2011 and 2012 Five Star Agent for Overall Sa"sfac"on by 5280 magazine. Joan is also an ac"ve volunteer with a number of organiza"ons and has served on a number of boards and commi/ees including: Cas-tle Rock Chamber of Commerce, the Professionals Miracles Founda"on, Bell Mountain Ranch Ac"vi"es Commi/ee, Douglas County Task Force, Women’s Crisis Center and Pro-ject Angel Tree, to name just a few. She lives in Castle Rock with her husband and three children. Throughout the year, students work in close coopera"on with many local business leaders, community members and educa-tors who use their personal experiences to demonstrate how to develop ideas and objec"ves, write a business plan, pitch to poten"al investors, obtain funding, register with govern-mental agencies, establish e-commerce and a web presence, and much more. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and func"oning businesses, which may be carried on a]er their gradua"on from the program. This year’s mentors (at "me of publishing) include: Nicole Frazier, Colbe Galston , Doug Bartoff , Robert Johns, Lynne Hurlburt, Gyan Saxena, Crystal Blue, Steve Peterson, Joe We-ber, Golden Goodwin, Diana Gould and Mary Vielhauer. If you, or someone you know, is interested in par"cipa"ng in YEA! as either a student, mentor, guest speaker, volunteer graphic designer or web developer, please contact [email protected]. Developing Leaders in Douglas County

LDC illuminates the important issues affecng our community,

and connects you with the resources and people who can help you to make a difference.

Tony Stephenson, Wind Crest Rerement Center, Parcipant The LDC Class of 2015 has spent the past few months tracing the path of the county’s earliest leaders through historical presenta"ons and visits; learning about current health care op"ons and the resources available for those who are aging in place in Douglas County; and ge^ng a behind-the-scenes look at how our judicial district handles the scope of legal cases that come through the system. Par"cipants have had the opportunity to talk with elected officials, mayors and city managers; they’ve met with Douglas County judges, the District A/orney, Public Defender and Vic"m Advocate who have provid-ed their unique perspec"ves on the delivery of jus"ce in Douglas County; and they’ve explored the great work that a number of social service agencies are doing right here in Douglas County. Photos from recent classes can be viewed on the LDC Facebook page h/ps://www.facebook.com/leadershipdouglascounty. The upcoming January 7, 2015, Leadership Class will focus on Economic Development, Transporta"on and Masterplan, beginning the day at Cabela’s in Lone Tree with an economic development presenta"on fea-turing Carla Rodriguez, Sr. Manager of Cabela’s, Brian Burke, Vice Presi-dent of Field Integra"on at Charles Schwab and Kaiser Permanente’s Clayton “Mitch” Mitchell, Na"onal Facili"es Director. The purpose of the day is to gain an understanding of how and why businesses choose to locate in Douglas County and the importance of though_ul planning by municipali"es. Each Leadership Day also revolves around professional development. Class members have received training on team building, public speaking and conflict resolu"on skills from experts in their field, giving LDC par"ci-pants tools that they can take back to their workplace to make them more effec"ve leaders and team members. Be Our Guest! If you are interested in applying to the LDC program and would like to preview the program by a/ending a class day, please let us know!
