The skin can be the best barometer of changing seasons. That’s because our skin relies heavily on moisture to keep it hydrated and supple. With the onset of cooler months, humidity in the air decreases and our skin, the body’s largest organ, undergoes transepidermal water loss or TEWL. This can cause dry, flaky, itchy skin; cracked, dry hands and parched, chapped lips.

Severely dry skin is a problem in eczema, psoriasis and diabetes. These individuals can be prone to a secondary infection from bacterial overgrowth when the natural barrier of the skin is disrupted.

Prevention is the best tool for fighting dry skin. We recommend shorter, cooler showers, and not using soap except under the arms and in the groin area. Soap takes the natural fats off the skin, which help to moisturize it. Applying a moisturizer, like H&H Green Tea Body Lotion, while the skin is still damp is preferred, as this will lock in moisture.

Hands are especially susceptible to the rigors of cooler temperatures. Try an overnight hand rejuvenation to help. Before going to bed, wash your hands and apply H&H Intensive Hand Cream. Then, wear light cotton gloves or socks over your hands for the night. You’ll see a marked improvement in the morning.

Be Sure to Cover Up and Moisturize!

Winter weather presents a new set of challenges for those suffering with acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema and seborrhea.

For acne sufferers, cold weather robs the skin of moisture, causing the skin to dry and irritate easily with prescribed acne topical medications. We suggest moisturizing to keep the skin supple, but there is a fine line between over-moisturizing, which will aggravate acne, and not moisturizing enough, which is uncomfortable. A topical emollient that is lotion based (such as H&H Ultra Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer) for hydrating is better at repairing the skin’s barrier function. It is important to continue using any prescription drugs even though skin may feel dry. Apply any topical prescription drugs over the H&H Ultra Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer. It causes the medication to penetrate deeper and thus, be more effective.

Rosacea Rosacea flares in extreme hot or cold weather. Without enough protection from the cold, raised red bumps on the cheeks, chin and forehead will appear within days. It’s best to cover your face before you go outside in cold weather if you’re a rosacea sufferer. Topical products, such as Finacea, MetroGel or Noritate work to control the outbreaks. Combine this with the H&H Green Tea Lotion and Cleansers.

PsoriasisPsoriasis is a skin disease that clears with sun exposure. Winter weather may cause psoriasis sufferers to seek out tanning beds. This is not recommended, as tanning harms the skin. Cold may cause psoriasis and its arthritis to flare. Moisturize daily after each shower while the skin is damp. CeraVe, Cetaphil and Excipial are recommended.

Eczema Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects all ages, but is more commonly seen in children. It is estimated that 20 percent of children suffer from eczema. It usually affects the hands, face, neck and legs. It causes dry, inflamed red skin that is extremely itchy and uncomfortable. Warm baths and heavy, creamy moisturizers after the bath can provide relief. CeraVe and Excipial repair the skin in eczema patients. Hand eczema can be a painful problem in the winter, as skin on the hands can split, crack and bleed.

SeborrheaSeborrhea, a yeast-like condition, affects adults in the central face, scalp and ears. It is a scaly, greasy, red eruption that is controlled with dandruff shampoos and a topical anti-yeast medication.

Cold Weather Affects

Make sure you don’t confuse callus, clavus (corns) and molluscum contagiosum for warts. Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Different strains of the virus cause common warts, flat warts, plantar warts (sole of the foot) and genital warts. They present as flat or rounded bumps on the skin and can have tiny black dots. Multiple treatments may be required. Your immune system helps to recognize the virus and fights it.

TreatmentTreatments depend on the size and number of warts, the type of wart, location on the body, age of the patient and prior treatments. Some of the most common treatments include cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen), cauterization, curettage (scraping the wart and burning the base), laser, canthacur (blistering agent that kills the wart), injectable medications (bleomycin and candida antigen), and some topicals. Also, homeopathic remedies are used.

Genital warts are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases with an 80 percent lifetime risk of acquiring the infection. One million new cases are diagnosed each year. A complication of these warts is cervical cancer in women, as well as cancer of the penis, anus, vulvovaginal area and periungual skin (around the toe or fingernail). The virus is transmitted during sexual encounters and lesions can occur on the external and internal anus and genitals.

Children don’t have the capacity to control their body temperature the way adults do. Because they are more influenced by ambient temperatures, it is extremely important to make sure they are bundled up for winter weather.

Children lose a lot of body heat from their head, so it is important they wear a hat when going outdoors. Dressing in layers is a good approach. Gloves are important as well as warm, waterproof footwear.

It is helpful to remember the acronym CHaP – Cover, Hydrate and Protect. Make sure children are well hydrated by applying moisturizers, such as CeraVe, before and after outdoor exposure.

When little ones come in from playing outside, give them something warm to eat or drink, such as hot chocolate or soup, and keep them warm until their body temperature regulates.

Children with eczema suffer more in colder weather. Covering the skin and moisturizing can form a barrier to protect from exposure to cold.
