1 Remove and repair any tool that malfunctions. All personnel must be instructed to remove anymalfunctioning equipment.

2 Ensure that all employees who use this tool are trained in the proper use of this tool and are aware ofthe dangers that may arise if they do not follow the procedure outlined in this brochure.

3 Enclosed are four (4) copies of “NOTICE TO OPERATORS, MAINTENANCE AND CLEANUPPERSONNEL.” Post one copy on the employees’ bulletin board; give one copy to the operator(s);give one copy to the maintenance foreman; and give one copy to the sub-contract cleanup / internalcleanup foreman. Additional copies will be provided upon request.

4 The tool is designed and intended to be powerful. This fact should be obvious to your employees, butyou must emphasize it to them.

5 Never make modifications or alterations to the tool. Replace any missing or illegible labels.

6 Ensure that proper procedures are established in accordance with OSHA’s lockout/tagout procedures(29 CFR 1910.147) to prevent accidental startup or release of stored energy.

7 Follow our installation and maintenance instructions for proper installation and care of the tool.

8 Avoid injury. Do not permit the tool to be misused.

9 If you resell or distribute a Jarvis product, you must provide the purchaser with the appropriate safetysheets and tool brochure. Additional copies of safety sheets and tool brochures will be provided uponrequest.

notice to operators, maintenanceand cleanup personnel

1. Disconnect the power supply in accordance with OSHA’s lockout/tagout procedures (29 CFR1910.147) before making any blade changes.

2. Disconnect the power supply in accordance with OSHA’s lockout/tagout procedures (29 CFR1910.147) before performing any repairs or maintenance.

3. Disconnect the power supply -- or have the power supply disconnected -- in accordance with OSHA’slockout/tagout procedures (29 CFR 1910.147) before performing any cleanup.

4. Disconnect the power supply when the tool is not in use.

5. Never put fingers, hands or other parts of the body on the cutting edge or within the cutting path of thetool when it is connected to the power supply.

6. Test the tool prior to use or daily. Depress each trigger separately and the tool should not start. Depressone trigger, then pause one second and depress the other trigger and the tool should not start. Repeatthis procedure reversing the triggers. Depress both triggers simultaneously and the tool should start.With the tool running, release one trigger and the tool should stop. Continue holding the depressedtrigger and then depress the other trigger. The tool should not start. Repeat this procedure holdingthe other trigger. If the tool malfunctions, remove it from service and report or repair it immediately.

7. Test the door interlocks prior to use or daily. Open both the idler and drive end doors individually be-fore depressing both triggers simultaneously. The tool should not start with either or both doors open.If the tool malfunctions, remove it from service and report or repair it immediately.

8. Never depress the triggers unless you want to use or test the tool.

9. Nevermake modifications or alterations to the tool. Report or replace any missing or illegible labels.

10. Never remove any safety devices on the tool.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY INACCORDANCE WITH OSHA’S LOCKOUT/TAGOUTPROCEDURES (29 CFR 1910.147) BEFOREPERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

ALL WIRING MUST BE DONE IN ACCORDANCEWITH NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL ELECTRICALCODES.

1 Install the electrical control box in a dry overheadlocation that will not be subject to wash down.

2 Wire the electrical control box as shown on diagraminside door of control box.

2.1 Install transformer between tool (if 42 V) andcontrol box, if required. Refer to wiringdiagrams on pages 13--16.

2.2 Attach the saw power cable to the control box ortransformer, as required.

3 Install the saw balancer above the work station on atrolley.

3.1 Ensure that the trolley has sufficient travel toallow theBuster IX to reach theentireworkarea.

4 Suspend the Buster IX from the balancer.

4.1 Adjust the balancer to the operators’ preference.

5 Adjust the saw hanger. Refer to Figure F, page 8 unlessnoted otherwise.

5.1 To adjust the front/back tilt of the saw, loosenthe two bracketmounting hex head screws (item10) and slide the hanger assembly forward toraise the front of the sawor rearward to lower thefront of the saw.

5.2 To adjust the saw to cut straight down thebackbone, loosen the wing screw (item 11) andturn the plug and handle (item 9)counter--clockwise to make the saw cut more tothe left. Turn the plug and handle clockwise tomake the saw cut more to the right.

6 Connect the hot and/or cold water supply. Refer toFigure B, page 5 unless noted otherwise.

6.1 Attach the hot and cold water supplies to theappropriate hose fittings (item 57).

6.2 Attach a drain hose to the saw drain coupling.

OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY INACCORDANCE WITH OSHA’S LOCKOUT/TAGOUTPROCEDURES (29 CFR 1910.147) BEFOREPERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

1 Turn on the power.

2 Prior to use or daily, perform the following tests:

2.1 Make sure that the dual anti--tie down controlhandles ( upper trigger handle, Figure E, page 7and rear handle, Figure C, page 6) and the doorinterlock codedmagnets (item 6, FigureA, page4 and item 26, Figure B, page 5) are functioningproperly. Depress each trigger separately andthe tool should not start. Depress one trigger,then pause one second and depress the othertrigger and the tool should not start. Repeat thisprocedure reversing the triggers. Depress bothtriggers simultaneously (within one half secondof each other) and the tool should start. With thetool running, release one trigger and the toolshould stop. Continue holding the depressedtrigger and then depress the other trigger. Thetool should not start. Repeat this procedureholding the other trigger.

2.2 Open both the idler and drive end doors (item4, Figure A and item 24, Figure B) individuallybefore depressing both triggers simultaneously.The tool should not start with either or bothdoors open. If the tool malfunctions, remove itfrom service and report the problem to yoursupervisor immediately.

2.3 Make sure that the Buster IXmoves freely on itsbalancer.

3 Making the cut:If an elevating platform is used, the operator cankeep the Buster IX in an horizontal position duringmost of the cut.Avoid using force on the saw; instead, guide theBuster IX.Step 3.1 is necessary only during the operator’straining period. Experienced operators may omitStep 3.1.

3.1 Mark the center of the backbone with a knife.

3.2 Start the Buster IX.

3.3 Saw through the tail bone.

3.3.1 The idler end of the saw should be pointingupward.

3.4 When the tail bone contacts the rail portion ofthe Buster IX, saw until the bone splits apart.

3.5 Saw through the loin area.

3.5.1 The Buster IX should be horizontal duringthis portion of the cut.

3.6 Saw through the shoulder and neck areas.

3.6.1 The idler end of the saw should be pointingdown during this portion of the cut.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

1.1 The Jarvis Buster IX is equipped with dualanti--tie down control handles (upper trigger

handle, Figure E, page 7 and rear handle, FigureC, page 6) and door interlock coded magnets(item 6, Figure A, page 4 and item 26, Figure B,page 5). Check for the correct operation of thesefeatures prior to use or daily. Depress eachtrigger separately and the tool should not start.Depress one trigger, then pause one second anddepress the other trigger and the tool should notstart. Repeat this procedure reversing thetriggers. Depress both triggers simultaneously(within one half second of each other) and thetool should start. 1.3 Clean and check the idler and drive end bladeguides. Refer to Figure D, page 7.

1.3.1 Remove cheese head screw (item 13).

1.3.2 Slide the blade guide mounting plate (item3) out of the idler and drive end blade guidehousings (items 5 and 17).

1.3.3 Remove the six (6) cheese head screws(item 1) from each of the blade guidemounting plates (item 3).

1.3.4 Rotate or replace the blade guides (item 2)as required.

1.3.5 Insert a 0.022 inch (0.56 mm) feeler gagebetween the blade guides.

1.3.6 Apply light pressure to the outside of theblade guides and tighten the cheese headscrews (item 1).

1.3.7 Remove the cheese head screw (item 1)from each of the blade guide mountingplates (item 3).

1.3.8 Rotate or replace the backup blade guide(item 14) as required.

1.3.9 Re--install the blade mounting plateassemblies into the blade guide housings.

1.4 Check the drive wheel. Refer to Figure I, page 9.

1.4.1 Tighten the bearing lock nut (item 3) to 80lbf--ft / 108.5N--m. Jarviswrench 8039120is available for item 3.

1.5 Check the idler wheel. Refer to Figure I, page 9.1.5.1 Check the idler wheel for tightness. If

wheel needs adjustment, loosen cheesehead screw (item 6), turn the idler wheel nut(item 5) clockwise until hand tight. Tightencheese head screw (item 6).

1.6 Check the gear case oil. Refer to Figure J, page 10.

1.6.1 The oil level should be even with the top ofthe sight glass plug (item 22).

1.6.2 The oil should be changed if it appears darkor gritty, if it contains water or if anybearing is being replaced.

1.6.3 The proper lubricant is SAE 80W--90EPhypoid gear lube, API GL--5.

1.7 Check the cord and plug assembly.

1.7.1 Check the cord and plug for wear orabrasion and replace if necessary.

2 WEEKLY:

2.1 Clean and lubricate the torque knob assembly(Refer to Figure H, page 8).

2.1.1 Remove the torque knob assembly from theBuster IX saw.

2.1.2 Remove the two (2) cheese head screws(item 24) and remove the torque knob cover(item 25).

2.1.3 Remove the retaining ring (item 34).

2.1.4 Remove the torque knob shaft (item 33).

2.1.5 Thoroughly clean all parts.

2.1.6 Inspect o--ring (item 30) and replace ifnecessary.

2.1.7 Turn the torque knob (item 28) so that theball end of the ball plungers (item 27) arevisible. Pour light (<10W) oil onto theballs.

2.1.8 Using awooden or plastic dowel, work eachball plunger up and down to lubricate thesprings.

2.1.9 Apply Jarvis 1315 White Grease to eachball plunger (item 27) and to the rollerbearing (item 26).

2.1.10 Install the shaft assembly (items 29 and31--33).

2.1.11 Rotate the shaft assembly slightly until youcan feel the ball plungers align with theholes of the inner bearing race (item 31).

2.1.12 Install the retaining ring (item 34).

2.1.13 Tighten the torque knob to 60--65 lbf--in /6.8--7.3 N--m. Torque wrench nut adapter8030056 and torque wrench 8039138 areavailable.

2.1.14 Install torque knob cover (item 25) andcheese head screws (item 24).

2.1.15 Install the torque knob assembly into theBuster IX saw.

3 WHEN NECESSARY:

3.1 Replace the blade.3.1.1 Open the drive end door (item 24, Figure B,

page 5) and the idler end door (item 4,Figure A, page 4).

3.1.2 Loosen the torque knob (Figure H, page 8)at least five full turns.

3.1.3 Raise the blade guide assemblies (FigureD,page 7) so that both guide assemblies areparallel to the floor.

3.1.4 Remove the old blade and discard.3.1.5 Install the new blade with the teeth pointing

away from you (in toward the frame).3.1.6 Tighten the torque knob until you feel it

“click”.3.1.7 Twist the blade so that the teeth point

downward. Rotate each guide housingdown and over the blade.

3.1.8 Close the drive and idler end doors.3.1.9 Briefly run the saw and then re--tighten the

torque knob.
