What and Where are the Rainforests?

What? A rainforest is a very thick forest, usually in tropical areas. Rainforests get a lot rain. In the rainforests there are trees, plants, animals, and people. Did you know there are two types of rainforests, the Temperate and the Tropical? Where? Only 6% of the world is rainforests. Tropical rainforests are found close to the equator. Temperate rainforests are found in the temperate zones close to, but not touching the equator. Both are endangered. The rainforests are in Congo, Angola, Liberia, Nigeria, Gabon, French Guiana, Peru, Panama, Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Colombia, Borneo and Madagascar.

Why are Rainforests Important

Rainforests are important because they give a home to many plants and animals. Rainforests help build up the world's oxygen and are a source of medicines and food. Tribal people also live in the rainforest. And it's a nice place to visit!

Animals of the rainforests There are so many animals in the rainforests that half of the animals in the world live there!!! Some of the animals in the rainforests are: orangutan, jaguar, wooly monkey, red howler monkey, squirrel monkey, hippo, lowland gorilla, Agouti taczanowskii, bearded pig, streaked tenrec, tapir, capybura, coatimundi, agouti, okapi, ocelot, red riverhog and yellow-handed titi monkey.

Plants of the Rainforest

There are many plants in the rainforest. There are poisonous plants, fruit plants, meat-eater plants, etc. Now lets read about some plants:

Lianas Lotʼs of the worldʼs vine species grow in tropical rainforests. The liana is a climbing vine found in tropical rainforests.

Epiphytes Epiphytes grow everywhere but mainly on the branches, trunks, and even the leaves of trees.

Mosses

Mosses are green and brown and soft when you touch it.

People of The Rainforest

Lots of people live in the rainforest. About 50,000,000 tribal people live in the rainforests. They work hard to get their food and shelter. As we cut the trees, and destroy a lot of the rainforest, we are also killing people. Here is some more information of the three largest tribes: The Pygmies: They live in the rainforests of Central Africa. They hunting and gathering food. The Huli: They live in the remote highland forests of Papua New Guniea. They hunt, gathering plants and grow crops. The men decorate their bodies for ceremonies.

The Yanomami: They live in South America. They have a special building called yano. The yano is a large circular building.

Causes of Rainforest Destruction The main cause of rainforest destruction is humans! Here are some of the things we are doing: Logging: cutting down trees and using them for

paper, houses, fires etc… Fuel wood: any wood like material gathered and used for fuel.

Mining and Industry: Building houses and digging for gold and other valuable things. Tourism: Tourism can be a problem but not always a problem. It depends on how you do it for example if you build roads and huge hotels that is bad. But if you use some of the trees for camps it can be good.

Results of Rainforest Destruction

The results of rainforest destruction can be devastating. It puts people and animals out of their homes and destroys lives. It also effects the air we breathe and effects the temperature around us. If we keep on destroying rainforests some animals will get extinct !

Solutions to Rainforest Destruction Here are some of the ways we can help Rainforests: Teach others about how important the environment is and how they can help save the rainforests, and fix damaged ecosystems by planting trees where forests have been cut down. Also, when you buy things, buy things that are eco-friendly. Finally, you can encourage people to live in a way that doesnʼt hurt the environment.

How Can We Help The Rainforest?

We can help to the Rainforest by not cutting down so many trees. We should also stop killing animals. If you cut down the trees, then the animals canʼt have a home and they die. Plants give us oxygen and the trees give us food and the rubber too. If you cut down all the trees on Earth, we canʼt have oxygen. And if you kill the animals then soon will be no species of animals on the Earth! We should pick up trash, feed animals, plant trees, and RECYCLE!!
