JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

Our celebrations for last week’s Education Week were absolutely tremendous. I would like

to thank the hard working teachers for organising, planning and presenting the many wonderful workshops and activities, with Tuesday’s Arts Showcase and Thursday’s “Around the World in 28 Classrooms” both attended by 400+ people. It truly was wonderful to see so many families and community members present. Thank you for sharing in celebrating our

Education Week 2013 at Blackburn Lake Primary.

PREP 2014 Further thanks to the staff who showed just why “Blacky Lake is great”, through giving their time and expertise at last Wednesday night’s Prep Information Evening. As well as a large number in attendance, last week we had over 70 school tours from (potential) new families to the BLPS community. For our existing parents wishing to enrol siblings, please visit the Office to collect an enrolment form, where you will be given (Term 3) ‘Launch Pad’ and (Term 4) ‘Orientation’ information – also available @ http://blps.vic.edu.au/page/56

Our flexibility with both “straight” and “multi-age” classrooms emphasises the academic and also the social and emotional development of children and how this affects learning, interactions and behaviour. Given the breadth of abilities in any single year classroom or multi-age classroom, any argument is virtually irrelevant. Class 3/4J is an example of how we cater for the varied abilities in any classroom, and given that the Level 3 teachers all plan together, the work being completed is of the same nature as that undertaken in the Grade 3 and the Grade 4 classrooms each week. The unit of work being studied in Level 3 this term is ‘Our Living Planet’ and on Tuesday morning I worked with students investigating the Earth’s ecosystems with this the content of the reading, writing, and speaking and listening tasks. The Literacy Block is based on a whole-part-whole teaching model, with the teacher beginning with introduction of concepts to be covered. After class teacher Jacinta modelled the activities, the children immediately went to work, clearly knowing the classroom’s organisational routines. One group began Guided Reading with Jacinta, benefitting from expert questioning to focus on the text type, as well as asking both thin (factual) and thick (inferential) questions. Three other groups worked (with the help of myself and Teacher Aid Lisa Mynott) on similar, yet different reading tasks (pictured) that also contained text on the theme:- i) recording book facts on a data chart, ii) locating information in a text to find answers, and iii) researching and producing a PhotoStory of an animal (child selected).

At the end of the morning’s Literacy Block, students were able to share their work, as well as be given feedback – from both teacher and students. Thank you Jacinta, for creating a safe and supportive environment for the children to learn, with a high standard of work completed by all students in grade 3 and grade 4. A MOMENT IN TIME… In educating children, I believe that teaching can sometimes be about seizing the moment in order to provide a significant learning outcome. This week, a comment directed towards Adam Goodes, the Sydney Swans footballer provided one such moment. For those of you unaware of what occurred, a 13 year old girl in the crowd called Goodes an “ape” as he was near the boundary line. How can we use this moment to teach our children? I raised the topic at our Staff Meeting in that this could be seen as a pivotal moment in preventing name calling and putting others down. While we obviously teach our children to be resilient, putting others down and name calling in the school yard can “cut deep” and sometimes, as was illustrated by the weekend’s events, be extremely offensive. The weekend’s events are a reminder of the significant value of thinking before speaking. ALSO IN THE NEWS… As well as our continuing work in creating a safe school environment, given the recent abduction attempt (at 8:20 in the morning) in Melbourne’s northeast - http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/law-order/young-girl-fights-off-would-be-abductor-in-greensborough/story-fni0fee2-1226651778806 - I remind the Blackburn Lake Primary School community about teaching children protective behaviours when walking to and from school, with parenting expert Dr Michael Carr-Gregg suggesting that children need to be taught about personal safety as openly as they are taught about road safety and water safety. "Talk to your children about stranger danger, but don't frighten them," Carr-Gregg says. "Let your kids know they can talk to you about safety issues and concerns they have." He advises parents to teach their children that bad people don't necessarily look mean - they often will smile and act friendly. "Discuss with your children how to identify safe adults who they can go to when they are in danger - people like police and firemen," Carr-Gregg says. "Street proofing children is not just about pointing out dangers, but teaching them skills." Children have very good instincts. They should trust that feeling in their gut that tells them if something is safe or not. Is it safe for kids to walk to school by themselves? Make sure your child has a friend or friends to walk with and make sure the friends know how important it is to stay in a group. Also remind your child of “good” adults in their world, who can be trusted and encourage them to “tell” if they even think they came across a stranger.

We prioritise student safety at Blackburn Lake, with local examples of this having seat-belted buses on excursions, having teachers on yard duty before and after school (as well as at recess and lunchtimes), tightening our student management (discipline) procedures in the classrooms and requiring all visitors to the school to ‘sign in’ at the office – as well as seeking Working With Children Checks from parents assisting in out of school activities. As well as having protective practices embedded in our curriculum, Blackburn Lake Primary students also have the Department of Education (liaising with police and Emergency Management) who inform schools of local critical incidents, by distributing coded alerts to principals:

Alert Code Level Symbol Principal Action School action Code Green 1 For your information Principal and school management team

to be prepared for further information which may require action.

Code Amber 2 Inform staff to be vigilant Increased vigilance and responsiveness by staff at school (eg: thief in vicinity of school grounds targeting staff belongings and vehicles).

Code Red 3 Inform school community Inform parents / carers of situation and provide advice (eg: known sex offender in vicinity of school).

Code Black 4 Lockdown or evacuate school Lock-down or evacuate procedures to apply as per school’s emergency DiS PLAN

As well as often revisiting “stranger danger” in classroom Circle Time discussions, staff regularly promote student protective practices. Of course, if there are any incidents of a local nature, we will inform the school community (as indicated by Code Red above). At tomorrow’s Whole School Assembly @ 3pm, we will acknowledge of our ‘Students of the Week’ and hear reports from this week’s incursions and excursions. Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

Runs until the 9th June Whenever BLPS staff and parents shop at Woolworths they can collect points from the checkout operator and

place them on point sheets. There'll be one point for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, they can place their point sheets in the collection box, either at your school (Earn & Learn Box in foyer) or at the Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre Woolworths store. Same great partnership with MTA: we're proud to say we're partnering once again with Modern Teaching Aids – Australia's biggest supplier of resources for schools. Which means you can choose your resources based on your unique needs, across every category possible including Mathematics, Music & English resources, Science equipment, Arts & Crafts materials, Sports gear and lots more.

SUSTAINABILITY This term at Blackburn Lake we are studying Sustainability and the environment. In an attempt to do our little bit for the environment and minimise waste we’re now composting all of the fruit and vegetable leftovers from Brain Foods and lunches. The wonderful Environmental Captains, with the help of a team of Compost Monitors will manage the whole operation. A massive thanks also goes out to Dean Conman (Facilities Committee Convenor) and Bunnings for providing the buckets and compost bin.

We need your vote to help our students’ progress to the final five! You can vote here as many times as you like, as well as viewing some excellent contributions from schools around Australia utilising the iPad to enhance student learning:

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv9NixqL1ciuwCPpr97djmA All the best Kim, Flynn, Natasha, Emily and Eloise!

Competition - Voting is Open The response to the IMovie Trailer on the IPad Competition has been fantastic. We have received approximately 70 entries. We are impressed with the quality and creativity of the students. We commend the teachers who have encouraged and organized their students to enable them to participate. To those teachers who persevered in learning new skills (e.g. Uploading to YouTube, Creating an IMovie), well done. We truly appreciate your efforts and trust the students gained from the experience. Originally we were going to short list the entries. However we have decided to enable all entries to be viewed and voted on for the first week. Then the top ten movies will be short listed based on how many votes they received in the first week.

There are two ways to vote. You can vote on the ICTclassroom YouTube Channel by selecting the like button or by sending your vote via the Contact Us page on the ICTclassroom Website. Remember to name the video you are voting for. As a result of the interest shown for the Competition we will be running other similar competitions in the future. We welcome any suggestions from teachers and students on the type of competition they will enjoy participating in. The ICTclassroom Team

Next PA Meetings - Wednesday 12 June 2013 Our next scheduled PA meeting will be on Wednesday 12 June. Meetings start at 7.30pm and are held in the staffroom. We’d love to see you there! All welcome.

Cadbury Chocolate Drive 2013 Notices have been sent home for our very yummy Cadbury Chocolate Drive. This year all proceeds will be going towards replacing the basketball towers and backboards on the basketball courts. You can opt to sell Chocolates (1, 2, 3 boxes, as many as you like!) or if chocolates are not your thing you can make a contribution to the drive. Chocolates will be delivered to your youngest child (if you opt-in) on the 21st June. We are looking at getting a range of Cadbury bars and a selection of The Natural Confectionery Company lollies – so, they should be easy to sell!

Did you know that aside from Autumnfest, the Chocolate Drive is the single biggest event fundraiser for the school? Each box we sell raises over $25 profit for the school. Why not take a couple of boxes to work. Please start returning your purple forms so we can get organised.

Tummies fed and $500 raised at Education Week Thank you to Dean, Miranda, Andy and the other helpers who assisted at the Sausage Sizzle on Open Night during Education Week. As well as feeding some hungry kids (and parents), $500 was raised for the school.

What else is the PA up to? Around the time of our annual Chocolate Drive each year, we get occasional feedback from parents that they would prefer healthier options from the PA, or for the PA’s focus to be broader than fundraising. We completely agree. Each year, we discuss whether to run the Chocolate Drive and we continue to do so because outside Autumnfest, it is the single biggest fundraiser for the school raising $25 per box of chocolates sold. No other fundraiser we have run comes close to that. We are about much more than fundraising though and we do have healthy options. In particular:-

We organise morning teas and catch ups for parents and children to meet and socialise at;

We run Canteen, Foodie Days and Sausage Sizzles as a service to the school and its culture e.g. at Education Week and Buddy Day;

We run social events for the kids to enjoy e.g. the School Disco (details below);

Page 8: JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message · Showing a more positive attitude towards her work, particularly her effort –well done! His persistence in learning some ‘tricky

We run events with a health focus, such as ‘Are you Faster than a Fifth Grader’ Fun Run (details also below);

We’ll have a fruit and veggie drive later in the year. We are always interested in ideas for fundraisers, but we are limited in resources – like you, we look after kids, work, study, try to exercise, and spend time with friends and family. So, if you’ve got a great idea, we’d love to hear from you, and if you’ve got a way to get your idea in action, all the better! Also, we welcome anyone to come along to our meetings, put forward ideas and join the discussions we have about what our PA should prioritise.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS As a fundraiser, we are selling Entertainment Books. 20% of the purchase price comes directly to the school. Books are only $65, and you'll receive $15,000 worth of valuable offers which are valid until 1 June 2014. These include great discounts and 2 for 1 offers such as savings off cinema tickets, local food venues (such as TGI Fridays and most fast food venues) and up to 5% on gift vouchers for various petrol outlets, supermarkets and other large retailers. To obtain your copy and support the school, visit: https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/1894b68 and complete the online order. Nominate to pick-up your book and it will be sent home with your child within a couple of days. If you have any queries, please contact Vanessa McCallum on [email protected] or Nicola Gray on [email protected].

MOTHER’S DAY STALL. We hope the Mums and Grandmothers enjoyed their special day last Sunday! We also hope that you received a special gift that made you smile. Thank you very much to the parents (including one super-spruiking Dad), who helped run the Mother’s Day stall last week. Thank you also to all of the children who brought along their money (pocket money or otherwise obtained) to purchase their gifts and for the Senior School runners who helped move the classes through the stall so efficiently. We raised a grand total just over $1,500.00 with the proceeds supporting the work of the Parents’ Association. Robyn and Simone Mother’s Day Stall Coordinators

Are you ‘As Fit as a Fifth Grader’? Friday a week ago, Blackburn Lake held its annual cross country event where our children ran a combination of distances ranging from 1000 meters (1km) to 3000 meters (3km). Your school PA would like to challenge you to do the same. Can you walk or run the same distance your child completed last Friday?

Are you ‘As Fit as a Fifth Grader’?

The fitness challenge will be held on TUESDAY 4th JUNE 2013, as part of an extended Morning Movers circuit. Starting gun for all distances is 8.20am.

You can choose to run (or walk) any of the four distances completed by our children last Friday – specifically 1000m, 1500m, 2000m or 3000m.

Why not pick the distance that your child completed?

Perhaps do a distance you’re comfortable with.

Either way, we challenge you to join your children in morning movers on the 4th and keep moving.

House points will be awarded to parents completing the challenge!!! For those of you with a competitive edge, the time to beat has been set by the fastest child across each distance and will be announced during assembly on Friday afternoon and again on the morning of the 6th. So dust off your runners, start training and get your own dots (and house points) during Morning Movers on Tuesday 4th June. To express your interest in participating, please email Wendy at [email protected]. $2 to enter. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Storyline: Twins, William and Elizabeth, find passports in a secret library in which they are directed to sign their names to travel back in time. They find themselves in England, in the year 1415, invisible to all except young Hugh Calthorpe, squire to the great knight, Sir Thomas Erpingham. They soon find themselves witnessing history at first hand as they join King Henry V and his mighty army of knights and English archers, who cross the English Channel to France, where they take the town of Harfleur by seige. The twins are immersed in the events of medieval warfare, and go on to witness the great battle of Agincourt. Prattle House 1415 is a time travel adventure for children up to the age of 99, to immerse themselves in the wonders of the past and enjoy history.
