JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

Earlier this week I walked to the Morton Park Cenotaph with the children of Grades 5 and 6. In the community ceremony to mark Remembrance Day I was most proud of the respectful manner in which our senior students conducted themselves – not only walking to and from Blackburn, also in appropriately acknowledging and showing a genuine interest in the occasion. This continued afterwards when a smaller group joined me in a visit to the Blackburn RSL, where our students attentively listened to stories by “the diggers” – not to mention enjoyed some morning tea! With the numbers of those who fought in war diminishing, it is pleasing to know that “the spirit of the ANZAC” is in safe hands with our students. Indeed, the students noticed an item from our school - a wreath (from 2010) a key feature of the memorabilia on display.

50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Our plans to acknowledge the school’s 50th Anniversary on Friday 5th December continue to build, with celebrations for this afternoon and evening intended to involve our current students and families, former students and families, and past and present staff:

Back To School (1:00 – 3:30pm) afternoon tea, school tour and special assembly

50th Party Picnic (3:45 – 6:00pm) BYO picnic with live band and other light food options available

Stage Show (6:00 – 7:30pm) Christmas Carols, School Choir and other musical items

In celebrating our 50th anniversary we have also arranged a fundraiser with our own especially labelled wines for those wishing to grab their own memento of this special milestone! Make sure you place your order online via www.oakroomwines.com.au (selecting ‘Blackburn Lake’ under the fundraising link at the top of the page). PLANNING FOR 2015 In recent weeks teachers have worked on the challenging task of getting class formations right for 2015, creating groups that are well balanced with regard to academic abilities, social compatibility and gender. Tomorrow afternoon we build upon our successful term three Launchpad Program, by inviting new Prep children to enjoy our Orientation Program with aspects of our Specialist Programs (Art, Italian, Music and Physical Education). Whilst the children participate in these activities (over the next three Fridays) new prep parents will meet in the Library for information sessions – this Friday’s focus being ‘Wellbeing’.

Next Tuesday night we also invite parents of 2015 Prep children to a Parent Information night beginning at 6:30pm, with selected staff presenting information to parents about what to expect as their child begins their school life here at Blackburn Lake Primary.

CHILDREN UNWELL AT SCHOOL If your child has been unwell overnight or in the morning before school, please consider giving them a day off to recover and reduce risk of cross infection to other children and staff. We appreciate this can be difficult with work and other commitments but it is sometimes a necessity to aid in a child’s recovery and to prevent further illness in the school community. If a child is unwell or tired, they are not going to be in the best frame of mind to learn.

We do have a “Sick Bay” and a First Aid Officer (Gay Burnett) employed between 11am - 3pm, but this is primarily for children who become unwell at school, advising and waiting for a parent or guardian to collect children, dealing with accidents that occur at school and to assist in managing asthma, anaphylaxis and other medical conditions. If your child is not well or has an injury sustained at home or at sport outside of school hours and you are unsure how to manage this, we would advise that you see your GP. At tomorrow’s whole School Assembly @ 3pm we will acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’, enjoy an item from the Prep children, and celebrate November birthdays. Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

Congratulations

A number of our instrumental students sit external exams on their chosen instruments. These provide them with motivation and focus in their lessons, and for their practice at home. It also gives them a great sense of achievement when they receive their special certificate. Angus C 3A Violin Preliminary A

Congratulations to this student for their dedication and hard work!

If your student has sat an exam recently, I would love to hear about their achievements. Please email me their results so that we can all celebrate their success.

Make a Tornado in a Bottle

Learn how to make a tornado in a bottle with this fun science experiment for kids. Using easy to find items such as dish washing liquid, water, glitter and a bottle you can make your own mini tornado that’s a lot safer than one you might see on the weather channel. Follow the instructions and enjoy the cool water vortex you create! What you'll need:

Water

A clear plastic bottle with a cap (that won't leak)

Glitter

Dish washing liquid Instructions:

1. Fill the plastic bottle with water until it reaches around three quarters full. 2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid. 3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see). 4. Put the cap on tightly. 5. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds,

stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly
