Training Your Mind to Help You

Written by Stephanie Yeh TRAINING Your Mind to Help You; Our friend, singer and songwriter Chuck Pyle, likes to say, "The mind is like a bad neighborhood-you should never go there by yourself." If you're mind hasn't been trained to help you, via methods like meditation, sha-manism or NLP, it might really be a bad neighborhood. Our m inds constan t l y absorb thoughts, behaviors, and re-sponses from our environment. These various thought patterns and responses may or may not be in alignment with our goals. So, unless we actively train our minds to be responsive to our needs, we may be in for a wild chariot ride (and 6 out of control horses)!

Religion versus Paranormal Beliefs BY; Janine Cruzet

There is no exact connection between religion and paranormal beliefs . There are people who are religious but don’t believe in things like Bigfoot or UFOs while others believe in many paranormal events but who are not part of any religious tradition. Then, one does not anything to do with the other.

Those people who show obedience to religious traditions may often be eager to renounce any correspondence since paranormal beliefs are often portrayed as less sane and reliable than religious beliefs. In some cases, conservative and other religious believer often regard paranormal beliefs as evil actions of evil forces in the universe and not the sort of thing they would like to believe.

On the other hand, religious and paranormal beliefs share lots of important things in common. Both paranormal and traditional religions are in the same nature which they are not considered as part of the world as a place controlled by sequences of cause and effect between matter and energy. Instead, they believe that the added presence of immaterial forces influences or controls the path of our lives.

By paranormal beliefs, we tend to search for our desire to find logical meaning to some chaotic events that come our way. If we are suddenly aware of a distant event we shouldn’t neglect, it might be credited to psychic powers, clairvoyance, spirits, angels, or God. There seems to be a real scale between what we tend to call “paranormal” and the ideas in many religious faiths

Paranormal beliefs are more than superstitions and religious beliefs. Since paranormal beliefs are commonly part of an integrated beliefs system about the very nature and substance of the universe whereas superstitions are often isolated ideas at times related to cultural traditions irreligious beliefs. The paranormal beliefs which are integrated to belief system are very similar to religion .they can provide meaning to our lives as well as the events in our lives. They can also provide social structure, and give comfort in difficult times. However, paranormal beliefs system lacks some of the critical characteristics of religions. They don’t typically engage ritual acts, because it’s unusual for them to make a distinction between the sacred and the sacrilegious. It is also rare for people to base a moral code upon those beliefs. Even though paranormal beliefs means that they are not the same as religion, the strong similarities do suggest that they stem from some of the same needs and desires as religious beliefs.

Religion versus Paranormal Beliefs

Research shows that religion and paranormal beliefs are separated phenomena. There are some studies that try to correlate religion to paranormal beliefs but there have been varied results. For an instance, one study concluded that there is a strong chance that belief in the paranormal is a substitute for religious beliefs, and that both religious belief and paranormal belief serve to lower death anxiety. However, some researchers found that paranormal belief was commonly not associated to religiosity. There were some events and specific beliefs such as E.S.P and Astrology had a minor opposite relationship with religiosity, which the study concluded that belief in the paranormal may substitute for traditional religious beliefs.

On the opposite side of the scale, some studies completed in Canada, found that people who chose “none” as their religious preference were not any more likely to believe in the paranormal than participants who had a religious preference (in this study, only the data from those participants who chose “other religion organization ,” like “Protestant,” or “Catholic” were utilized. Study also found that there was a considerable positive relationship between religious beliefs, which were measured by a 6-question scale asking how much, if any, the participant believed in God, angels and others.

Paranormal beliefs, which were also measured by a separate 6-item scale, asking how much participants believed in ESP, astrology, found that participants who stated that they attend church regularly were slightly less likely to have paranormal beliefs. Constant held of religious belief gives an impression of more significant negative correlations between church attendance and paranormal beliefs.

So, in this case, finding the relationship of religion and paranormal beliefs were an endless journey. But as long as you have faith in the Supreme Being it will not alter the truth that

Stress A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked “How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” He continued; “And that’s the way it is with stress man-agement. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. So, my friend, Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don’t pick it up again until after you’ve rested a while. Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life: * Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. * Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. * It may be that your sole purpose in life is to simply be kind to others. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can’t dance well, just get up and dance. * Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. * The second mouse gets the cheese. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

‘The New England Vampires’ BY JAMES SNELL We have all heard about the Salem, Massachusetts Witch Trials that took place in New Eng-land in 1692. At the time, Salem was a small and tight Puritan community. Most other commu-nities in NE were very religious, and extremely superstitious as well. Since the lives of the early settlers literally revolved around their faith, they had a great proclivity for attaching supernatural explanations, customs, and remedies, to everyday tribula-tions. This was especially true in cases of the most unfortunate of events. Since there was very little understanding of biological sciences in those times, again they turned to supernatural explana-tions for the human physical and psychological condition. These communities were very small and close, hygiene was sub-par compared to contemporary standards. It is this type of inter-action and circumstance which created the ideal conditions for the spread of infectious dis-ease. Although by the late 1600’s there were native born English residing in the colonies, there were still many folks who were new arrivals coming from Europe who were also bringing with them communicable disease from the old world and illnesses they developed from the unsanitary con-ditions of some of the ships they arrived on. It is just such a plague that took the lives of many Native Americans in New England who had never been exposed to infections like smallpox, influenza, bubonic and pneumonic plagues. Because these were alien infections, there was no immunity residing in their bodies to combat these unknown diseases. The result was a Native Population Loss of up to 90% in some of the hardest hit areas. I point to the Salem With Trials as an example of the hysteria created by superstition in rela-tion to illness, and it’s reactions and results. There is a similar and somewhat lesser known terror that gripped the colonial settlers which stemmed from Eastern European beliefs. When we think of ’Vampires’ in contemporary terms, we immediately get visions of Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’. In actuality, Stoker took some artistic liberties in combining Eastern European superstition with the story of Vlad Dracul Tepes also known as ’Vlad The Impaler’ or ‘Dracula‘. Tepes was a real person known for his unusual cruelty and propensity for extreme carnage. He took great pleasure in cruelly torturing his subjects. Illustrations from the period show Vlad dining as he is surrounded by the decaying bodies of his victims.

‘The New England Vampires’ The truth of the matter is, ‘Vampires’ didn’t start out associated with our vision of ‘Dracula‘. The real origin of Vampirism is that it was blamed as the cause for the very contagious and painfully deadly disease of Tuberculosis (TB), which was referred to in the day as ’ C o n s ump t i o n ’ f o r t h e b o dy c o n s um i n g s ymp t om s i t p r o d uc ed . TB is extremely infectious and even to this day TB takes a life about every 20 seconds. Given the circumstances, consumption moved from settlement to settlement spreading like wildfire, and once introduced into a household it would most likely begin with taking the lives of the children. Families were large back then, and parents were subjected to the horror of loosing their children one by one as TB spread from child to child, and family to family. I have seen many family plots in New England filled with 10 or more children all passing within months of each other, and I can only imagine the sheer horror of a parent experienc-ing something like that, but in those days, it was a part of everyday life. When the Consumption came to several of the small New England villages, it was sometimes greeted with a macabre ritual if the situation presented itself for such reaction. In one par-ticular case in mid-late 1700’s Rhode Island, a family was struck with the terrible misfortune of loosing their children one by one as the consumption was spread throughout the home-stead. The first to pass was the eldest daughter. Subsequently, each child who followed claimed to have had a vision of their big sister coming to them in the night. Although one can assume this might be the result of hallucinations due to high fever, home remedy medications used for healing purposes, and the stress of their bodies dealing fighting the TB. As time went on, these reports became the catalyst for 'Vampire Hysteria'. Since each afflicted child reported a similar vision of a visit from big sister, it was assumed by her family and the townsfolk that she must have something to do with the plague. In an effort to end the devastating death and misery, they decided to exhume her body. They found her corpse to be in relatively good condition as far as decomposition, the corner of her mouth was stained with wet blood, and the fingernails had the appearance of growth. This evidence led the people to presume she was a ‘vampire’ and had been responsible for the consumption of the other children by coming to them in the night and feasting on their blood. There were several remedies for such an affliction in those days. The most popular was to dismantle the body, and stack the skull on top of 2 crossed femurs (that’s right, the ’Skull

There is one spirit and we are all a part of it.

The universe in composed of vibrating particles of energy and empty space. The more slowly the particles vibrate the more solid they appear

There is only one kind of energy. (yang) We experience it as moving (yang) or still (yin).

What we experience as the material world is matter coming into being,

As individual entities we exist in a “soup of vibrating particles.” We each emanate our own individual vibration, plus we are constantly affected by

‘The New England Vampires’

and Crossbones’) and bury them placing a large stone over the interment to prevent them from getting out and finding their way back to the village. Decapitation of the corpse was a given in these rituals. There have been a few discoveries of such arrangements found in New England. One such site was discovered by 2 children playing in Griswald, Ct in 1990. They had been playing in a construction site and had unearthed an unknown burial plot where the coffin lids had initials stamped on them in silver tacks, and the bodies (or bones) were arranged as de-scribed above. Another ritual recorded in local history was to burn the heart or even the entire body. Tac-tics like driving a wooden steak through the heart or head were also deployed. Sometimes there would be words or symbols carved into the casket covers or head and cover stones. All of these things were done to confuse the corpse so it would not be able to find it’s way around and consume the rest of the community. Just to be safe, in this particular case, the townspeople did this to all of the siblings of the suspected vampire girl who also passed due to consumption. Of course, we now understand a lot more about biology, disease, and contagions. We also know more about the process of decomposition. In this knowledge we understand that blood coming from the corner of a cadavers mouth (remember, there was no embalming prep done on these bodies in this time era) is perfectly natural as blood vessels and capillaries decompose and allow bodily fluids to make their way to the surface. Another tell tale sign of vampirism is the fingernails will ‘continue to grow’ after death. It was assumed this occurred due to the corps gaining nutrition from consuming the blood of it’s victims. In reality, fingernails do not grow after death, this is just another result of decomposition where the skin of the fingers recedes as the skin dries, shrinks and decomposes leaving the illusion of a longer fingernail. Other pieces of ‘evidence’ observed were skin blotches in particular shapes or signs (again, the release of fluids in decomposition can account for this). Today there are actually vampire cults. These are groups of people who drink small amounts of blood from willing participants in a belief that it will bring powers and everlasting life. These cults are based on the Stoker literary ideas of Vampirism. If you stumble upon the right old cemeteries here in New England, you can still find traces of Vampire Hysteria in the markings on gravestones and in local history books, but you won’t nec-essarily have to bring any garlic or holy water to investigate them.

Training Your Mind to Help You

have mind as a tool doesn't mean that mind, in its current form, is a good tool for us. The untrained mind is a lot like an untrained animal-be prepared for the unexpected!

Have you ever sworn to yourself (say on New Year's Day?) that you're never going to fall for the wrong kind of mate again? Or you're going to lose 10 pounds this year? Or you're going to . the list is endless. Then what happens? We forget what we've promised ourselves, or we find other priorities that are more important. That forget-fulness is a sign that mind isn't trained to help us with our aims. Mind is doing its own thing.

So what can we do to train mind? Segment intending, one of our favorite exercises from Abraham-Hicks, is a simple way to train your mind to help you while also accom-plishing a lot each day. Here's how you do it:

1) Pick the length of time for your "segment." It can be any length of time, but no more than an hour. Thirty minutes or an hour works well. Decide exactly what time the segment will start and end.

2) Decide on your aim for that segment. It could be a list of tasks, a state of being, or both. For instance, you might decide that you will strive to remain light hearted while you return phone calls for 30 minutes.

When the segment start time arrives, start your segment with no second thoughts. Put your attention solely on the tasks for that segment and nothing else.

4) If you get interrupted during your segment, you need to decide whether the inter-ruption is important enough for you to stop your segment (for instance, if your boss stops by your office for a chat). If the interruption is not important enough, keep going on your segment. If the interruption is important, make a conscious decision to stop your current segment and start a new one (one centered around the interruption).

Practice doing these segments throughout the day. Each segment is a training period for your mind, and will teach your mind to assist you in whatever you are doing. Seg-ment intending works even better with a buddy, who can help you stay on track and stay focused. Whether you segment intend by yourself or with a friend, you'll find your mind becoming much more responsive to your needs as a spirit. Enjoy!

NASA Confirms Liquid Lake on Saturn Moon Written by Thomas

NASA scientists have concluded that at least one of the large lakes observed on Saturn's moon Titan contains liquid hydrocarbons, and have positively identified the presence of ethane. This makes Titan the only body in our solar system beyond Earth known to have liquid on its surface.

Scientists made the discovery using data from an instrument aboard the Cassini spacecraft. The instrument identified chemically different materials based on the way they absorb and reflect infrared light. Before Cassini, scientists thought Titan would have global oceans of methane, ethane and other light hydrocarbons. More than 40 close flybys of Titan by Cassini show no such global oceans exist, but hundreds of dark, lake-like features are present. Until now, it was not known whether these features were liquid or simply dark, solid material.

"This is the first observation that really pins down that Titan has a surface lake filled with liquid," said Bob Brown of the University of Arizona, Tucson. Brown is the team leader of Cassini's visual and mapping instrument. The results will be published in the July 31 issue of the journal Nature.

Ethane and several other simple hydrocarbons have been identified in Titan's atmosphere, which consists of 95 percent nitrogen, with methane making up the other five percent. Ethane and other hydrocarbons are products from atmospheric chemistry caused by the breakdown of methane by sunlight.

Some of the hydrocarbons react further and form fine aerosol particles. All of these things in Titan's atmosphere make detecting and identifying materials on the surface difficult, because these particles form a ubiquitous hydrocarbon haze that hinders the view. Liquid ethane was identified using a technique that removed the interference from the atmospheric hydrocarbons.

The visual and mapping instrument observed a lake, Ontario Lacus, in Titan's south polar region during a close Cassini flyby in December 2007. The lake is roughly 20,000 square kilometers (7,800 square miles) in area, slightly larger than North America's Lake Ontario.

"Detection of liquid ethane confirms a long-held idea that lakes and seas filled with methane and ethane exist on Titan," said Larry Soderblom, a Cassini interdisciplinary scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Flagstaff, Ariz. "The fact we could detect the ethane spectral signatures of the lake even when it was so dimly illuminated, and at a slanted viewing path through Titan's atmosphere, raises expectations for exciting future lake discoveries by our instrument."

NASA Confirms Liquid Lake on Saturn Moon

The ethane is in a liquid solution with methane, other hydrocarbons and nitrogen. At Titan's surface temperatures, approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit below zero, these substances can exist as both liquid and gas. Titan shows overwhelming evidence of evaporation, rain, and fluid-carved channels draining into what, in this case, is a liquid hydrocarbon lake.

Earth has a hydrological cycle based on water and Titan has a cycle based on methane. Scientists ruled out the presence of water ice, ammonia, ammonia hydrate and carbon dioxide in Ontario Lacus. The observations also suggest the lake is evaporating. It is ringed by a dark beach, where the black lake merges with the bright shoreline. Cassini also observed a shelf and beach being exposed as the lake evaporates. "During the next few years, the vast array of lakes and seas on Titan's north pole mapped with Cassini's radar instrument will emerge from polar darkness into sunlight, giving the infrared instrument rich opportunities to watch for seasonal changes of Titan's lakes," Soderblom said.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer team is based at the University of Arizona.
