Gathering Music I’ve Never Been in Love Before by Frank Loesser Ceora by Lee Morgan A Child is Born Processional Verses

Evening prayer, or Vespers, from the Latin word Vespera meaning “evening” is a worship service at the close of

the day that has its roots in the Jewish daily hours of prayer. In its transfer to the early Christian church and to

Vespers services today, it has kept its contemplative character, offering thanks for the mercies of the day, and

prayers for divine protection and the gift of inner peace. Vespers traditionally included the singing of psalms,

hymns and the canticle of Mary’s song Magnificat, as well as readings from scripture and the offering of prayers.

Thanksgiving for Light

PSALMODY

Psalm Prayer Leader: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O God, and let your loving

kindness descend upon us, that with purified hearts we may sing your praise with the church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.

All: Amen

Psalm 145:1-8 People sing verses in bold print.

1I will exalt you, my | God and king, and bless your name forev- | er and ever. 2Every day | will I bless you and praise your name forev- | er and ever. 3Great is the LORD and greatly | to be praised! There is no end | to your greatness. 4One generation shall praise your works | to another and shall de- | clare your power. R 5I will speak of the glorious splendor | of your majesty and all your | marvelous works. 6They shall tell of the might of your | wondrous acts, and I will re- | count your greatness. 7They shall publish the remembrance of | your great goodness; they shall sing joyfully | of your righteousness. 8The LORD is gracious and full | of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in | steadfast love. R Psalm Prayer

Leader: Loving God, you are faithful in your promises and tender in your compassion. Listen to our hymn of joy, and continue to satisfy the needs of every living thing, that all your creatures may bless your name, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, both now and forever.

All: Amen

WORD Reading: Matthew 20:1-16 (The Message Translation) 20 1-2 “God’s kingdom is like an estate manager who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work. 3-5 “Later, about nine o’clock, the manager saw some other men hanging around the town square unemployed. He told them to go to work in his vineyard and he would pay them a fair wage. They went. 5-6 “He did the same thing at noon, and again at three o’clock. At five o’clock he went back and found still others standing around. He said, ‘Why are you standing around all day doing nothing?’ 7 “They said, ‘Because no one hired us.’ “He told them to go to work in his vineyard.

8 “When the day’s work was over, the owner of the vineyard instructed his foreman, ‘Call the workers in and pay them their wages. Start with the last hired and go on to the first.’ 9-12 “Those hired at five o’clock came up and were each given a dollar. When those who were hired first saw that, they assumed they would get far more. But they got the same, each of them one dollar. Taking the dollar, they groused angrily to the manager, ‘These last workers put in only one easy hour, and you just made them equal to us, who slaved all day under a scorching sun.’ 13-15 “He replied to the one speaking for the rest, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair. We agreed on the wage of a dollar, didn’t we? So take it and go. I decided to give to the one who came last the same as you. Can’t I do what I want with my own money? Are you going to get stingy because I am generous?’ 16 “Here it is again, the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first.” Leader: Word of God. Word of life. All: Thanks be to God. Reflection (sit) Following the Reflection and some silence: Leader: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. All: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
