Dear prospective partners,

JDC West is a unique opportunity to showcase your company at an event unlike any other to be hosted in Western Canada. We invite you to join us as corporate partners in an event that has already developed a excellent reputation in Eastern Canada and holds even greater promise for Canada’s western provinces. This year, January 2010, will mark the 21st year of JDC (Jeux du Commerce), the fifth year of JDC West, and the first year of JDC Central, which will be hosted by Ryerson University in Ontario.

It is with great excitement that UNBC hosts JDC West, the largest and most prestigious business competition in Western Canada. Every year the competition encourages students to go beyond classroom learning to experience being part of a team that represents their school and their community. We are thankful to have the opportunity to bring together the brightest and best commerce students from across Western Canada for a weekend that will be remembered for a lifetime. We encourage you to get involved and take advantage of the chance to interact and influence the future of business in Canada.

JDC West is completely organized by student volunteers who, in their spare time, thrive on the challenges and rewards of creating competitions and events for others to enjoy. With the help of professors, coaches, judges and gracious corporate partners the competitors of JDC West prepare extensively to perfect their performance. All donations of knowledge, expertise, and resources to make JDC West a major success each year are essential. Thank you very much for providing the opportunity for students to shape their professional careers and to enrich their lives beyond the classroom.

Sincerely,

Jonathon Gray Farouk Ramji

Jonathon was introduced to JDC West in 2007, competing on the UNBC athletic team. In 2008, Jonathon and Farouk continued their involvement as they competed on the entrepreneurship and social team, respectively. The energy and professionalism experienced by both at the competition inspired them to give back to the business community and future business students. In 2009, they were nominated to be the team captains of the JDC West UNBC team. Jonathon and Farouk have the experience and dedication to make JDC West the most successful and educational weekend for over 500 commerce students from across Canada.

a message from the PremierJDC (Jeux de Commerce) is one of the most prestigious business competitions in Canada and I am pleased to know that JDC West 2010 will be hosted by the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George. This will be an exciting opportunity for students from across Western Canada to make connections, develop team work and leadership skills, and incorporate a strong sense of business acumen into their university experience.

Each year, it takes dedicated organizers, volunteers and sponsors to make this inter-university competition one of the largest in Canada. Their hard work and financial support of this event goes a long way to provide hundreds of students with a focused and intense learning experience that they will grow from and remember for years to come.

The people and province of British Columbia look forward to welcoming everyone involved with JDC West 2010 and wish them all the best for a very successful competition.

The University of Northern British Columbia looks forward to hosting the 2010 Jeux de Commerce West, the largest and most prestigious inter-university business competition in Western Canada.

The Jeux du Commerce West (JDC West) will bring 600 business students to Prince George in January 2010 representing the business schools of eleven universities from Victoria to the University of Manitoba. There will also be a Rest of Canada team competing made up of the winning teams from Jeux de Commerce (the eastern division of JDC West).

The goal of JDC West is “to provide a structure, culture and opportunity for business students across Western Canada to achieve excellence in various challenging academic, athletic and social competitions.” The games bring together the next generation of Western Canadian business leaders to refine their skills, learn about one another, and develop the collective character that will shape the future of Western Canada’s business culture.

I can attest from my interactions with the JDC West leadership team at UNBC that these are exceptional young people who are enthusiastic business students and who also exhibit a commitment to social well-being through practicing humanitarian leadership that is truly remarkable.

I encourage your financial support for this event and assisting business students from across Western Canada to be the best they can be.

Sincerely,

Charles J. JagoPresident and Vice Chancellor

July 2009

I am delighted to hear that the 2010 JDC West competition will be hosted in Prince George by the University of Northern British Columbia. This exciting opportunity will go a long way toward preparing graduates for the future through promoting excellence among tomorrow’s leaders.

The JDC West will bring together nearly 600 delegates from eleven competing universities, and includes those winning teams from Jeux du Commerce (JDC eastern division). This premier event is a huge success because of the high academic standards, unique spirit of team work and sportsmanship, and because it presents a terrific opportunity for business students across Western Canada to achieve excellence in various challenging academic, athletic and social competitions. In addition, JDC West teaches students to operate in a sustainable manner, and to practice humanitarian leadership in their business and personal lives.

On behalf of Prince George City Council, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the organizers, volunteers and sponsors for this event. We look forward to welcoming participants to British Columbia’s Northern Capital and wish them every success in the competition.

Sincerely,

Dan RogersMayor

A team of three students will represent their respective universities in one of ten academic case study competi-tions; accounting, business strategy, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, international business, management information systems, market-ing, not-for-profit organization strategy and taxation.

The competitors go though three stages; isolation, reso-lution and presentation. The competitors check into iso-lation to ensure they do not have any exposure to any outside information about the case they are competing in. The three hour resolution stage is the stage through which a case study is read, analyzed, solved and made into a presentation. The competitors then move to a pre-sentation room where they have twenty minutes to pres-ent their case solution to a panel of judges.

athletiCsThe 2010 JDC West athletic competition is soccer. A round robin tournament will challenge eleven universities with ten players each in the UNBC Northern Sport Centre field house. The UNBC facility features two 190-foot x 90-foot fields with FIFA sanctioned Polytan artificial turf under a 40-foot ceiling. The competition will be intense as most universities have high caliber athletes.

JDC West DeBateJDC West Debate is based on the parliamentary style of debate that is found in the Canadian House of Commons. Each team of four will be randomly selected to represent either ‘side government’ or ‘side opposition’, and they will parlay to pass or defeat a proposed public bill.

CharitY JDC West participants have raised over $400,000 for their local communities since it’s inception in 2006. Each year every school hosts an event called “Chillin’ for Charity” in which teams raise money for the local charity of their choice. In addition, JDC West encourages students to forge a partnership with a local charity and to volunteer as much as one can. Winning the charity component gives the competing team the utmost respect and admiration from all the competitors, faculty, and local businesses and residents.

sOCialThe most grueling and intense competition of the weekend is the social competition. The endurance and spirit of teams are put to the test as they meet challenges much like in the “Amazing Race” and “Fear Factor.” This year there are ten different social events that will test the endurance, spirit, skill, and teamwork of each and every social competitor.

PartiCiPatiOnThe coveted Participation Award is imparted upon the team that exemplifies the core spirit values of JDC West; empowerment, connectivity, professionalism, and energy. The participation award is given to the school who maximizes their JDC West experience from the moment they arrive in Prince George. The university who wins this award will be the most spirited, friendly and admired team at JDC West.

sChOOl Of the YearThe School of the Year Award is the ultimate goal of every team that attends JDC West. It is the pinnacle of all the hours of case studies, debates, athletic training, coaching, learning and strategizing. The School of the Year Award trophy is a direct reflection of a university’s dedication to achieving excellence through developing their students.

hUmanitarian leaDershiPThe theme of JDC West 2010 will be Humanitarian Leadership. The theme will be woven through every aspect of the 2010 JDC West Business Competition. Humanitarian Leadership encourages the demonstration of exceptional leadership in the pursuit of human welfare, security and peace through humanitarian actions and business practices. With growing world influence, the commercial arena must be a leader of humanitarianism. Through humanitarian business practices and concern for the welfare of every living soul, our generation has the opportunity to lead the way by practicing humanitarian leadership in our business and our personal lives.

Due to the success of Jeux du Commerce in the East, the competition began its expansion across the rest of the country. In 2006, the inaugural competition out west held in Vancouver under a new name: JDC West. JDC West was initially hosted in Vancouver for the first two years, and then traveled to Lethbridge and Edmonton, AB. hOsPitalitY sUiteCompeting schools are encouraged to host the hospitality suite on any night of the weekend; they can plan one individually or as a joint venture with another participating school. During August Meeting, bidding teams will do a 30 second elevator pitch of what they plan on doing with the hospitality suite. After each school has done their pitch, it will go to secret ballot and captains and members of the organizing committee will vote on whom they would like to see host the hospitality suite. The results will remain secret; the chosen schools will be notified discreetly so that the hospitality suites still remain a surprise during JDC West.
